Beautifully Varied Walking Holiday
Self-Guided Walking in Las Alpujarras
We started our trip with two extra nights in Granada which was well worth it. We did the Alhambra (need to book in high season), a flamenco evening and took in the ambience of the different parts of the city. We met with our local contact, Sandra, who was a great source of information and advice. Our transfer to Trevelez was by Jose, who was very knowledgeable about the area. We stayed in the sister hotel of La Fragua, I think because we were a late booking, and although we could use the swimm ing pool of the main hotel and the staff were very helpful, it was not as nicely furnished as the main hotel. Our first walk was the "Route to Penabon' as Sandra had advised us that the alternative was too overgrown. This was a steep walk but very rewarding, so a good choice. Transfer of luggage was efficient and the walks for the rest of the holiday were excellent, varied terrain and very picturesque. Be aware though, these are very steep hills. So even though the mileage is not extreme, some of the ascents/descents were. The villages were also beautiful and offered some delightful restaurants to sample the local cuisine (especially the ham!). We were slightly disappointed with the final hotel as the pool had closed for the winter. It only opens July, August and September. but we did have a good sized terrace to relax on and admire the views. All in all, a very good holiday, we felt well supported and would definitely do another self guided holiday with KE.

One Superb and extraordinary journey
Under African Skies Camping Safari
This trip is often referred to locally as The Trade Route for it follows one that was established long ago. It is simply one superb and extraordinary journey that you will make as a true traveller, as one with both your fellows and the wonderful people who are your guides. It is for those who have experienced Africa before, who can slide easily and effortlessly into the African rhythm of life and become immersed and absorbed in its culture. The days are long, the distances great; the temperatur e is hot, roads badly pitted (much “African Massage”); the power is sometimes down and the ATMs seldom work but the rewards are truly IMMENSE!

This three week adventure is just SO varied – four different countries, two contrasting game reserves, wild camping, organised site camping, lodges, beach huts, a canoe expedition, a lake expedition, a sea expedition, so many local communities to observe and oh my the food – a daily culinary experience from the guides and their “camp kitchen”. And there’s also plenty of space in the cooler box for the beer and the wine to celebrate another awesome day on this unique odyssey.

The South Luangwa National Park is rightly famed for its concentration of wildlife and under the expertise of the park guides, the experience is intense, especially on the night drives.

When did you last climb aboard a small, traditional Mozambique fishing boat to be taken out to an offshore archipelago whilst your brai is being prepared on an open fire at the stern? And then to have it served on the beach? The flavours were just exquisite.

The canoe expedition is breathtaking and long – it’s the Zambezi after all, one of the world’s great rivers but don’t forget you are sharing the water with large numbers of hippos and crocodiles! Sensible navigation as a group means you avoid being in a position where you become an interest to them. True adventure it is, but fair to say the mind is concentrated at the start!

I cannot recommend this trip enough to the experienced traveller – it’s what travel and adventure are meant to be. Enjoy!

Incredible Bolivia!
Salt Flats and Volcanoes of Bolivia
Fantastic trip every day providing jaw dropping landscapes & cultural experiences loved it so much will be going back to see more of this amazing country. KE have put together an excellent itinerary to enable altitude acclimatisation & the guide Juan was fabulous, one of the best have come across, with incredible knowledge of the geology, flora, fauna & culture of his country. The second week across Uyuni salt pans & then into Sajama National park for volcano trekking really wa s just an utterly mind blowing scenic experience and I can’t wait to explore more of the country on another trek.

Tolga Kanik, our Turkish guide, was excellent. He had good historical knowledge of the are were walking through. He was also good with plant knowledge and shared his enthusiasm with the group. Our accommodation at Cirali was the best with a family catering that was varied and learnt a lot about the rural Turkish diet which was lovely. The day's sailing over the Kekova sunken city from Ucagiz and exploring the hill-top castle of Simena and finally swimming in the blue Med. was the best way t o finish our holiday. Thank you KE.

A great holiday!
The Lycian Way
Our guide Ulas was superb, the accommodation very well chosen, and the food throughout was very good. The walking days were set at good distances and a good pace, and the boat trip on last day was an absolute pleasure.

Ulas was key to making this holiday such a success. Very organised, clear in his briefings, very measured in the walking pace he set in such hot weather, and an absolute font of information when it came to the history of Turkey and the landscape we were walking thr
ough. He is a superb guide!

Well organized holiday made especially easy with the comfort of coming back to the same hotel room each night. Plenty of great places to dine in Bled for tasting local dishes. Slovenians are very friendly people. They are working hard to provide a very high quality tourist experience.

“Mixed” weather, but still fabulous!
Self-Guided Walking Menton to Nice
Fabulous mountain scenery, stunning rugged coastline, amazing food (oh my word, the food!) and beautiful villages and towns. We had a fabulous time on this self-guided walking holiday, despite being rather unlucky with the weather at times.

Menton is a lovely town. Because of the time our flight was due to arrive, we booked an extra night in Menton at the start of the holiday. We were so glad we did, as it’s a lovely town to chill in. It was nice just drinking coffee, watchi
ng the world go by and strolling along the long seafront.

We ate fabulous French food every evening in Menton (the two nights we had at the start and the one night part-way through the trip). I’d recommend Le P’tit Resto, Fleur de Sel and JR Bistronomie.

The hotel in Menton (Hotel Pavillon Imperial) was clean and comfortable with a great location and good breakfast.

We did the long version of the hike up to Sainte-Agnès, and it was worth it, albeit be warned - it’s a harder hike than you might think.

Sainte-Agnès is a beautifully quaint, picture-postcard village - the highest coastal village in Europe. There’s actually very little to do there, but that’s okay, because it was our base for ascending Cime de Baudon the next day.

The accommodation in Sainte-Agnès was a restaurant with a few rooms - the wonderfully rustic Restaurant St Yves. We ate the most amazing food here, all sourced from local ingredients (including the most amazing mushrooms that the owner went foraging for). We ate delights such as homemade ravioli with rabbit sauce (and a great big chunk of rabbit on top), locally hunted wild boar stew, freshly baked blueberry and lemon meringue pies, and homemade (giant) pain au chocolates and croissants.

The weather for the ascent of Cime de Baudon from Sainte-Agnès was far from ideal. Periods of rain and thick cloud … the forecast was for it to get even worse in the afternoon. The trip notes warn that a scrambly section on the way up Cime de Baudon is such that it’s best to avoid the ascent in wet conditions. Although slippy, this scrambly section was fine, and it’s actually the descent from the summit down to the Col de la Madonne that requires a warning to be cautious if it’s wet. If you’re used to rocky descents in the wet in the Lake District or similar back home, the descent in the wet will be okay. My wife had never done anything like that before, so we descended cautiously and all was fine. Although there was no view at the summit, it was still very much worth doing … and we got back to Sainte-Agnès before the really torrential rain arrived later in the afternoon.

On the day from Menton, via Monte Carlo, to Beaulieu-sur-Mer, we again took the long option … and paid for it by getting caught in torrential rain for the last two hours or so. Actually quite a tough day, and the descent into Beaulieu-sur-Mer is tricky in the wet - a very steep path down, clinging to the side of a precipitous mountain down to the coast. With a bit of concentration and caution, it was fabulous! And in the dry, on a sunny day, it would be even better.

The Hotel Le Havre Bleu in Beaulieu-sur-Mer was clean and very comfortable, with a good location. But breakfast was a bit “meh” to be honest - save yourself the breakfast-disappointment and walk about 70 metres along the road to the most amazing patisserie / boulangerie that also does coffee and has inside and outside seating (L’Atelier d’Angnes).

There’s plenty of eateries in Beaulieu-sur-Mer. We chose Les Vents d’Agnes, which does fabulous French food, but also famously good pizzas (with a French twist).

We had amazing weather on the day for the hike from Beaulieu-sur-Mer to Nice. Wall-to-wall sunshine without a cloud in the sky all day. Again, we did the long route option, and it was so, so worth it. It was, in fact, the best coastal walk I have EVER done, anywhere. Just stunningly beautiful. I normally much prefer routes up in the mountains to routes along coastlines, but this coastal walk was fantastic - the best day’s walking of the entire holiday, and truly memorable. Although we had wall-to-wall sunshine, the sea was rough, making for spectacular waves crashing along the rocky coastline. Sections of the coastal path are closed with a bit of flimsy plastic tape stretched across the path when the sea is rough like this - some might decide to ignore this and use a bit of common sense instead!

Nice was a nice (pardon the slight pun) place to spend the last night, with a plethora of fabulous restaurants and a real buzz to it. And the Campanille Hotel in Nice was perfect - although budget, it was very clean, very comfortable and with a good location.

One tip - the trip notes refer to getting a taxi from the hotel to Nice airport at a cost of approximately £50. Save yourself a fortune, and just get an Uber on the app. We did - it cost €21, arrived in 3 minutes from ordering it, and got us to the airport in 20 minutes. Uber is (apparently) very good and very widely used in Nice.

We were really sad that this holiday ended. The days with bad weather, in a strange sort of way, actually added to the experience. And when the sun did shine, it was just beautiful. The walking was great … and I keep coming back to just how good the food was!

excellent trip, Nepal and Bhutan two interesting but different countries
Highlights of Nepal and Bhutan
A very interesting and varied trip, sights, mountain views, scenery, sounds, cultural and history, walks, sunrises and sunsets, some free time, in Nepal and Bhutan, two very different countries. Nepal a well established destination, Bhutan much less so, perhaps now a good time to visit. Hotels, accommodation, restaurants generally good. Excellent local guides Raj in Nepal, Chencho in Bhutan, both very knowledgeable, helpful, considerate. Very careful drivers of the group minibus in both countrie s, we were a small group of 8 who got on well from day 1, a couple of short and easy internal flights. Highlight in my opinion most definitely the Tiger’s Nest in Bhutan. Recommended.

We had a fantastic holiday in a spectacular area
Trails of the Amalfi Coast
Whilst the Walk of the Gods is spectacular, the other guided walks off the normal tourist routes were equally good. It was not just the walking all the other associated activities were well planned and fun. Loved the guided group format, people from a variety of backgrounds coming together to enjoy like minded activities.

Giovanni was from the our first meeting at the airport to the end of the tour fantastic. It was not just his knowledge of the area, he would take every opportun
ity to tell us about the fauna and the geological aspects. He is so well respected by the local community and his fellow guides. We feel very lucky to have him as our guide, he ensured that we had a great holiday to remember.

Choquequirao to Machu Picchu Trek Sept. ‘24
Choquequirao to Machu Picchu
I recently returned home after a wonderful experience in the beautiful country of Peru,on the Choquequirao to Machu Picchu trek.
We stayed at a lovely hotel in Cusco, in a convenient location to do the city tour the next day. The tour was hosted by our guide Rudy Arqque. The tour was a wonderful introduction to the culture and history of Peru and the amazing heritage of The Inca people. We visited numerous important sights around Cusco before visiting the wonderful Cusco Cathedral. By the
end of the city tour the group realised that Rudy our tour guide, was extremely knowledgeable explaining details and dates with interest and passion.
The trek was amazing, the sights and sounds of a country steeped in history. This trip was camping, tents were always erected before we arrived each day at camp,so that after a long trek that day, we had the luxury of relaxing in our own tent listening to birds and crickets. We camped on Inca terraces, watching a Condor soar over the valley below a warm orange glow reflecting on The Andes just before dusk, our mess tent then beautifully prepared for us all to enjoy a wonderful 3 course meal. We were so fortunate to have a very talented chef Juan, and his kitchen staff Rolando,Gregorio and Eder always smiling, always helpful who created the most delicious and nutritious food for us all to achieve our wonderful trek to Machu Picchu via Choquequirao.
They even made the most spectacular cake for us on day 5, amazing!
We also had the benefit of a mule team, which made this remote trek possible, The mule team were so helpful, looking after their mules and going ahead with tents and supplies, they were a jolly bunch always smiling and friendly the head horseman was Alfredo, he made sure his men and the mules were well cared for, there were Frank, Maicol, Hugo and our emergency horse led by Leo.
There were many memorable days and evenings, too many to mention all of them here, but just to give you an insight in to the amazing experience of this trek.
Each morning after a cup of tea at 5 am in our tents, we would eat a hearty breakfast before departing camp for our days trek, Rudy led his daily ritual of gathering the group together saying to enjoy the day, take pictures drink plenty and enjoy today! This always gave the team the positive start for our trek ahead.
The first sighting of Choquequirao in the distance was amazing, a beautiful unspoilt location, and on entering the buildings we were treated to the most interesting factual and most passionate explanation of the Inca people who had resided there.
Near the end of our trek we visited our goal, Machu Picchu, which was as stunning as we have seen in guide books and pictures, one of the wonders of the world, a world heritage site, Machu Picchu is all that you could have imagined and more, a truly magnificent experience.
The trek was a mix of narrow paths, steep inclines, and descents to river crossings, to wider paths with twists and turns revealing a new amazing view around each turn, to walking through bamboo forests, and jungle, with beautiful birdsong, to wide rivers to breathtaking views of the Andes to gorges, waterfalls, beautiful exotic plants and flowers, to high passes, from hot temperatures to cold and some sleet at the highest point! It was a great diverse mix and with it all there was the knowledge that we were safe, safe from the elements because we had been well briefed by Rudy on what to wear each day and what to carry with us, suitable for the terrain and weather, also as he was so experienced on this trail he knew each stage always reassuring, stopping for breaks for snacks and water.
I was a lone female traveller on this trip, but through the warm, reassuring and positive attitude of Rudy and the wonderful group of people that I met I never felt lonely or an outsider, I felt part of the team, which is so important to a successful and happy experience.
To sum up, the KE Adventure trek Choquequirao to Machu Picchu in my experience was a wonderful mix of culture and landscapes, I met some incredible people, not only within my group, but all the mule men, the cooks and kitchen staff, the warm and friendly people in small Peruvian settlements we met along the way and of course to our wonderful and very knowledgeable guide mr Rudy Arqque

Amazing experience
Camels on the Beach Family Morocco Holiday
The holiday was an amazing experience and was a great mixture of guided tours with free time. We went as a family with children aged 15, 13 and 11, and all of us loved it.

We were met on our first day by our guide, who was lovely and really friendly and helpful. He was available for the full holiday. We were also accompanied for the walking days of the trip (days 2-5) by a team of 3 others, plus 3 camels and a donkey, and they were also fantastic.

It was rated as &q
uot;Leisurely" (3), and was exactly that. There were some long walks (4 hours) but nothing difficult, and we took turns on the camels. While on the walking days, we passed through gorgeous beaches which were gorgeous and practically empty. The Essaouira beach was a bit busier but not too crowded.

The beach camping was an amazing night, and we all particularly loved the guest house at Sidi Kaouki.

The visit to the traditional Berber house was a highlight for us all, and we were made very welcome by the Haha family who hosted us. As we walked back to the guesthouse, we saw goats climbing in the argan trees, which was another highlight.

The food was delicious, as was the mint tea (although preferably without the heaps of sugar habitually added to it). The food was mainly traditional Morrocan dishes, but there were options for the fussy eaters.

We went in the summer, and I was a bit worried we would melt. Marrakech was very hot, but not so hot that we didn't enjoy exploring the souk, and the hotel had air conditioning. The coastal areas of Sidi Kaouki and Essaouira were a lovely temperature.

Overall an experience that will stay with all of us forever!

Walking in the Balkan borderlands September 2024
Walking in the Balkan Borderlands
This was a very disappointing trip. The previous reviews had rated it so highly. Sadly we didn’t have the obviously excellent guide that previous groups had. The problems did not relate specifically to the guides however who did their best but did not have appear to have the backup and support from the company. The most significant issue was terrible accommodation on 3 nights out of the 7 with significant health and safety issues. The response from KE to feedback about the holiday was very def ensive but they did acknowledge the failings of the accommodation which they had not been aware of.
The walking was spectacular however and fortunately the group bonded well.

Culture and Trekking Combo
The Druk Path Trek
This was my 2nd KE tour and it met all my expectations and more. The trip had a balance of outdoor movement and inside culture. The only downside was there was a fair bit of vehicle travel. This was not unpleasant as the scenery varied as we travelled over mountain passes, small towns and pleasant fields of rice and other crops in a comfortable mini bus. The agent in Kathmandu was lacking at the beginning of our trek. He was a no show on the transfer to the airport and also we missed the pr omised bag breakfast. We mentioned to KE office and on the return there was a different efficient agent that met us at the airport. We did the September trip and glad to do the culture part first and the trekking at the end. Hotels were high standard and food again was plentiful and often buffet style with multiple choices. Our guides, Nima and Yeshi were exceptional.

On the trek we ate a full breakfast, hot lunch on the trail, and dinner with soup. All meals were very tasty and there was always as much as you could eat. Our group of 9 moved well together with only a small difference in the pace set by the guide to the slowest hiker. We had one afternoon of rain on the trail and rain over several nights. With good raingear it wasn’t an issue.

A bonus for us is that we added on the Chitwan Jungle experience. We stayed at Tiger Tops Lodge and had 3 days of activities from jeep safari and seeing rhinos up close in the wild, walking with elephants, feeding elephants, local village walk and more. Comfortable lodge with great food.

Highly recommend this KE adventure and add on.

An amazing unforgettable trek
Choquequirao to Machu Picchu
We have been on a number of KE holidays before, so know how well organised and fantastic they are, but this trek exceeded all expectations. From start to finish everything was well organised and arranged for everybody to have the best experience possible. The staff in the KE office were very helpful at answering our many pre trip queries. Our guide in Peru was Rudy Arqque ( assisted by Yoe) and we could not have asked for a better guide. His knowledge and passion for Incan culture shone through in everything he did. He worked so hard and was always smiling and good natured, as were all the support staff. The muleteers, led by Alfredo, did a fantastic job transporting all the kit, and setting up/packing up the camps each day , and we were reassured by the presence of an "emergency horse" following behind us on the the more tricky days ( even if nobody needed it!). The Kitchen team, led by chef Juan ,were incredible. We had plentiful, varied delicious and nutritious food provided on a regular basis, always beautifully presented. They even baked a celebration cake for us!

The actual trek itself was beautiful. I am glad we picked the longer route as it meant we could enjoy the quieter days at the beginning near Choquequirao, before the busyness of Machu Picchu. Our guide, Rudy, shortened the second day of the trek so we stayed at Marampata, before going to Choquequirao the next day. This meant we were fresher when we first encountered Choquequirao so were able to appreciate it more, and also the campsite at Marampata was much nicer than the one near Choquequirao that we would have otherwise spent two nights at.
There are some steep ascents and descents on rocky and dusty terrain, but good pacing by Rudy meant nothing felt unachievable. Similarly good pacing and plenty of rest on the higher altitude days meant that everyone coped well ( and we were an "older" group).
As well as the trekking there were also some unexpected extras- the chance to visit a local house to see how people live in the Andes, and a tour of a coffee plantation finished with tasting coffee that had been roasted and ground in front of us.

The scenery is beautiful, the Incan remains impressive, but it was the friendliness of the people that made me fall in love with Peru.
