Another Himalayan Gem
Rolwaling Valley Trek and Climb - Yalung Ri
It's amazing what can be done in just two weeks: Kathmandu - ascent of a Himalayan peak - back to Kathmandu. Our 100% success entirely thanks to the leadership of Pasang Kaji "PK" Sherpa and the efforts of his team. It's a great trek beside the Rolwaling Chhu, with views of Alpamayo look-alike Chekigo (6257 m)...PK's idea of a "rest" day (Beding) was to hike the first two hours of the route to its base camp. Excellent acclimatisation. And excellent tea house ac commodation, and food. Cook Dhan Raj Tamang (the world's best chicken biryani) even brought along a (large) stove top espresso maker! Base camp (5012 m) was on snow, minus 11°C at night. Our ascent of Yalung Ri began with a relaxed and distinctly non-Alpine 7am start...and all summited by 12 noon. Made possible by the previous evening's Herculean efforts of PK et al fixing some 600 m of rope. This protected the final 220 m of climbing (20° snow slope - although seemed steeper!). It's a great climb, and rewarded with some fine views, including a distant Shishapangma, Gaurisankar and Cho Oyu. Top tip: Khukri Nepalese rum can be bought in tea houses en route...it's rather excellent in hot chocolate or espresso :)

Ecuador's Volcano Triple Crown
Ecuador's Triple Crown

We enjoyed excellent accomodation and food. The local guides and support were A1. I was somewhat out of my comfort zone on some of the mountain ascents, largely due to the lack of snow but I had complete confidence in the guides. Ram was with us all the way and looked after the group, calmly and efficiently.

Annapurna Circuit and Annapurna Sanctuary

Excellent communication from pre-booking stage all the way through, great organisation throughout, very reasonable accommodation arrangements and fantastic, friendly and competent team, led by Milan Tamang, on the ground. Great itinerary, very reasonable (ranging to really good) accommodations considering region and altitudes, really nice and hearty food and scenery to die for!

Had a great holiday
Cycling Tour of Rajasthan

The itinerary was great with great sights, varied cycling and great food. Stopping at local street food (& chai) stops was great, as was being greeted by locals whilst passing by on bike. Harish went above and beyond to make sure we had a great time. He was a big factor in how much we enjoyed our holiday.

Couldn't even see the beaten track from here!
Lamjung Himal Trek

This trip was fantastic for taking us away from the roads more travelled. We didn't see any other people for 5 days!
The camping/trekking is hard work because of the altitude and cold (I was there in Nov), but totally worth it to stand on the ridges and look down at a see of clouds as the moon rises and the sun sets on either side of you.

Ganesh Himal
Ganesh Himal Panorama Trek
A classic trek into one of the lesser known areas of Nepal. Whilst not walking amongst the high peaks (Manaslu circuit, Annapurna circuit, Annapurna sanctuary, Everest base camp) the views from a distance away are outstanding.
Numerous remote villages are encountered with happy and curious locals. Bhim was an excellent leader and had run the trek numerous times so knew all the details of the areas we visited.
The food was amazing (better quality than that in tea houses in my view)
I've never had Sushi at 4000m and -5 degrees outside temperature before !
The whole team Leader and assistants, porters and kitchen staff we happy and very helpful.
For potential trekkers on this trip, be aware that there are many steps up and down in forests to negotiate and a small amount of dusty road walking (cannot be avoided)
But saying this, the rewards for the hard work is spectacular views and vistas and exciting ridge walking

Ganesh Panorama
Ganesh Himal Panorama Trek
This is an excellent and varied trek, all credit to the guides, cooks and porters for making this the experience it was.

This trek takes a step back from being amongst the big icy peaks of the Himalayas, and that’s a good thing. It takes you away from the very busy routes like the Annapurna treks and Khumbu, and plunges you into unspoilt communities and wild forests, friendly school children and lofty ridge walks. About half my group were very experienced Nepal trekkers, and h
alf were new to trekking. This trek appeals to both as a lower altitude entry into the trekking experience, and as an escape for experienced trekkers away from the often noisy and crowded popular routes, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in a Nepal trek.

Visiting the friendly rural communities was a joy, and there is plenty of spare time to wander round the villages when you’re camping in these settlements. There are a number of dirt track roads hacked into the landscape these days, and they are unavoidable at times, but vehicles on these tracks are currently very infrequent or non-existent. The trek uses these roads at times, but the majority of the walk is on stony paths that zigzag their way around the hills through terraces and wonderful forests. Being a little way south of the big mountains means you benefit from panoramic views of the mountain ranges (assuming the weather is clear). For our trek, the weather was fabulous, and on arriving at the Pansang La we had views of the Ganesh, Manaslu, Annapurna and Langtang ranges all from the one ridge. You camp right on the pass here, and our late November trek meant we had -10 degrees C in our tents, so make sure you have some warm clothes. The next two days are spent at this higher altitude and the views are stunning, as are the ridge walks and forests you pass through – truly beautiful. A slight word of caution though, there are a lot more stone steps than some were expecting, especially on the descent from the Sing La – a full day of steps down to the next camp.

This trek was made by the excellent crew that supported us. All the guides were supportive and attentive, the kitchen crew were miracle workers, and the porters were superhuman. On that note I’d like to point out that KE’s kit bag limit for this trek is 15Kg, this is WAY too much in my opinion, the porters carry 2 of these bags each, plus other kit. Other trekking companies I’ve been with stipulate 12Kg or even 10Kg. I know my bag was under 10Kg and is plenty for a trek of this nature. The sleeping pads provided are pretty good and I didn’t take my own Thermarest and got on fine, finding the pads plenty long enough for my 6 foot (ish) height. I paid the single supplement for the tent and feel this was money well spent, giving me room to move about, spread out my kit, and minimise disturbance during the night. I’d recommend ear plugs – tent canvas does not muffle snoring from other tents.

I would also recommend having an extra day in Kathmandu before and after the trek to help give you time to re-pack, relax and enjoy the city. This trek was excellent, it had been a while since I’d last done a camping trek and now I’m looking to see what else KE do. I took about 1,000 photos and I’ve (hopefully) uploaded a handful here.

KE Adventure reply

Thank you for your review Mark. We're really pleased to read you enjoyed your trek in the Ganesh Himal, a much less visited region compared to the Khumbu and the Annapurna area. It is also gratifying to read your accolades for your trek crew who play such a major role in making these treks possible. To respond to your comment about porter loads, current government regulations, negotiated and agreed by the porter unions, is for a maximum load of 30kg (excluding a porter's personal equipment). If you have heard of other trekking companies who limit their customers' luggage below this amount, it is more than likely that this is to enable the porter sirdar to use the 'spare' capacity to carry group equipment (stoves, fuel, food etc.) and thus save on costs. The porters for these companies will still carry a maximum of 30kg.

The holiday was very well organised and a wonderful experience. PK Sherpa was a fantastic group leader. He is incredibly experienced and we felt very fortunate to be guided by him. He was friendly, caring and clearly keeping a careful eye on everyone's health, happiness and comfort. He was patient and willing to turn his hand to any task that needed doing. We felt completely safe in his hands and he made the holiday extra wonderful.

Exhilarating
Rolwaling Valley Trek and Climb - Yalung Ri
The trip was hard, but exhilarating at the same time. I did find the altitude a bit tiring, especially the first day. We had a near 10 hour bus journey and then started a brutal uphill climb which made me think that i was not going to make it. The following morning i was fine and good to go. The days ahead were gradual and mostly up the valley to various stops for acclimatising. The scenery is spectacular, the people are lovely and the weather was in our favour. We passed beautiful areas with ho ly significance. Everywhere you looked your jaw gapped in awe. The food was excellent and plentiful. The climb was the toughest I've faced and some of the other travellers commented on how hard it was compared to higher mountains they had done before. PK sherpa and his team had laid 650m of fixed rope the night before our climb to make it easier. I think this was because the snow was a bit deeper than usual and powdery. We all summited and our faces were joyous. We had a great group that all got on with each other. Finally to our tour leader PK Sherpa. This guy is an absolute joy and thoroughly professional. He did not falter in any way and made sure everyone was involved. Our conversations at night were full of laughter as we all took turns telling stories. His stories though were incredible. Everest, K2 and so on. He was humble with his tales, not looking for adulation at all. A fantastic human being that has done nothing but represent KE in the best possible way.

Memorable sunsets & sunrises
Guatemala's Magnificent Seven
Very enjoyable full on active trekking holiday which came really close to finishing before even starting.

7 our party were denied airline boarding as we were not warned in advance of the essential requirement for an ESTA visa for travelling/transiting via the USA. Luckily our holiday was flight inclusive so KE rebooked everyone on a different airline avoiding the USA.
The re-booking amounted to the loss of our 1st days itinerary.
Let's hope the ESTA visa over
sight never happens to any one else from this point onwards.

That's the bad stuff, now for the good stuff.

The activity level lives up to its grading.
If you like challenges then this is a holiday for you - there are back to back long day climbs which can be as demanding as you make them. The walks may not be lengthy but they are over steep uphill/downhill terrain.
The environmental condition vary as you may start a climb in the morning in brilliant, hot sunshine and end up finishing at altitude, above the clouds in single digit temperatures.
This shouldn't be an issue for experienced trekkers with good camping skills.

The guides are attentive & good at judging paces and making sure everyone is comfortable with whatever they are doing.
In any large group (14 in our party) there is always going to be a spread of paces. Diego (lead guide) did an admirable job in guiding and setting the right tone for the entire holiday.
He certainly gained my respect and let the more able bodied make their way up to/down from summits when judged safe to do so.

There is a significant amount of (slow) travel by bus as the volcanoes are spread along the length of country. But this is the price you have to pay in order to do interesting things.

The food is good and interspersing camping days with hotel days makes a good balance.

And yeah, I'd recommend this trip to anyone who asked me.
Just make sure you have the fitness level and you'll certainly enjoy the whole trip.

Hidden Valleys of Phu and Naar
Hidden Valleys of Naar and Phu
A great trek with few other trekkers about, but be prepared for a hard day's travel to reach the start. Once off the Annapurna Circuit it was a joy to walk quiet trails with few other trekkers seen. Accommodation was in good, basic lodges and we were well fed. The trek team and leader were excellent and for the night before crossing the Kang La we were joined by a a cook and camp team who set up a High Camp for a beautiful, but cold, night before crossing the pass. There were many hig hlights:
- Time spent in the Tibetan villages of Phu and Naar, especially with the opportunity to enter the Monastery at Phu and observe part of a service.
- The spectacular Phu Gorge which I think matches Grand Canyon for scenery and big walls with a path cut into the side in places. On the walks in, and out, we followed fresh Snow Leopard tracks and found fresh scat, but no sign of the beast itself.
- The crossing of the Kang La opening up fantastic views of the entire Annapurna Range.
- The weather, blue skies every day and starry nights
- Superb views of Manaslu on the way in and out.
- A great team.
The only downside I feel is the unavoidable need to use the dusty roads on a couple of days whilst on the Annapurna Circuit. However, more then compensated for by the days spent on quiet trails.

Amazing experience
Choquequirao to Machu Picchu
I have been on similar trips in the past, all were great, but this one stands out for the care offered by the local team. Our head guide, Rudy, was passionate, fun and incredibly knowledgeable. Joey, the second in command was supportive and kind and will, I’m sure, go far. The chef, Juan, and his team produced the finest food of our entire 2-month trip to South America! Add to this spectacular scenery and a lovely group of fellow trekkers. The hiking was a challenge, but very doable. Our group was aged between 54 and 69!
