A great Sicilian experience
Walking the Islands and Volcanoes of Sicily
Our trip to the volcanoes of Sicily was a delight. Firstly our guide Alesandro was a delight to be with. His knowledge of the culture of Sicily, his explanations of the workings of the different types of volcanoes, his knowledge of the best places to eat was excellent. Plus he is a really pleasant guy with great patience when things did not go quite to plan. The accommodation was lovely. For an easy walking and tourist trip it was a great experience. Seeing an active volcano erupt was high on my hit list. Stromboli did not disappoint.

Blown Away !
Walking the Islands and Volcanoes of Sicily
My first walking holiday - and so glad I chose KE. Walking the Aolean islands has been unforgettable. Each one has its own charm , and each one its own character. The highlight , for me was the trek up Stromboli . This was timed perfectly by our guide Alessandro , and also Stromboli’s own guide Giuseppe to get to the top at sundown , and then to be able to view the amazing light show in the dark ! This walk is not for the faint hearted, but when you get there the guides enthusiasm and knowledg e get your Adrenalin going and you just know you can and will do it . Half way up you are given the option to take a route back down if you wish . One group member who is 75 went all the way to the top - Respect !! Alessandro our guide for the holiday lives in Sicilily , and is extremely knowledgeable about the geology and history of the volcanoes. He took us to some great places to eat , where the Sicilian wine and food was good and very reasonably priced . His organisational skills are second to none - getting us all on and off hydrofoils, boats , and buses . His local knowledge was a godsend at times , as Sicilian boats and ferry’s do not always seem to stick to the timetables. Must be frustrating when trying to organise these trips . My tips would be - definitely take headtorch, gloves , warm hat , and a couple of fleeces. In April it can be quite chilly , especially up the volcanoes. And warming clothes for the evening too . Another tip - take travel sickness pills for the hydrofoils- I’m usually ok , but on one particularly choppy trip , many of us struggled - even the locals ! I have made some lovely friends on this trip , who I will be keeping in touch with . Some of them wee on their 5th/6th trip with KE . I’m already planning my next trip too . Well done Alessandro , and well done KE for picking him !

Great trip, spectacular sights!
Samarkand and the Silk Road
Just back from this trip and can't stop looking at my pictures because the sights were downright surreal. The hiking portion of the trip was beautiful and gave you a good dose of rural, traditional culture. I won't pretend I liked the drop toilets and lack of showers at the four home stays, but there was truth in the advertising and the experience met my expectations. That said, the hosts were warm and welcoming and we were well fed. Responsibilities on the trip were divided among two female guides, one who specialized in the urban historic sites and another on logistical support, including mountain guides. Great concern was shown for our welfare. Overall, great trip!

Great mix of walking covering all the Island has to offer
Levada Trails and Peaks of Madeira
Very good mix of walking - the peaks and the coast as well as the Levadas. Excellent Guide in Roberto. Hotels room fine - you might need to use your head torch to read your book in bed! So good to see so much of the island. Transport links worked well. Dinners weren't exciting but OK and filled you up. But lunches were dreadful. At start of week you get salad in a container which can't cope with being in a rucksac while you're walking. Even if you decant it into the tupperware box you're asked to bring, and later in the week when the salad gets put directly into the tupperware box, then the salads were all pretty awful taste wise. Bland and un-interesting. Also, if the weather isn't being kind the last thing you want to stop and eat is a salad. What is wrong with a decent sandwich? The Santana Hotel were the only ones who could cope with that - though I found out when I got home that they did manage to damage my lunch box - so don't bring anything that you mind being damaged. I understand you are ignoring what the guide is telling you about the lunches. please don't. He's right. When he's given dressings to put on the salads - well the container didn't make it in one piece to him - and wouldn't have coped at all in a rucksack while you walk. These lunches may be good if you are just sight seeing but if you're walking up and down hills they are worse than useless. Please do something about them

Fantastic cultural cycling trip to Iran
Exploring Iran by Bicycle
What a wonderful and rewarding destination. The history and culture and beautiful buildings are quite amazing. But most of all, the friendly welcoming reception we received from the people we met there was quite overwhelming. A special mention has to be made to our guide Tiam who was quite simply the best guide I have ever had. Not only is she a wealth of knowledge but a really lovely, enthusiastic and open person who made the trip so special. All the other guides and drivers were great as well and the Iranians couldn't do more to make you feel so welcome in their country. We also stayed in some delightful accommodation, especially the caravanserais and eco lodge.

A great trek away from the crowds.
Choquequirao to Machu Picchu
The trek was well lead by Henri & his assistant Marcella. Henri was excellent as was the pacing every day so that the group did not get split up and everyone could manage the steep hills. The logistics of the camping were well organised with the tents set up with our bags when we arrived, the tents were good quality & well sized (3 man tent for 2 people). The campsites were a variety of fields some with proper toilets and others with portable ones. The most stunning site was on o ld Inca Terraces overlooking the river & mountains. The food was excellent and the team of chefs achieved amazing things with a gas stove and what food they could carry. A 3 course lunch at 4,200m was also a highlight. This was the first trek of the season after the rainy season so more impacted by landslides. We had to traverse one serious landslide which was very well organised for our safety. The weather was varied a lot of people invested in poncho's to go over waterproofs as the rain can be in torrential downpours that can last a while. Thankfully after Cusco we didn't get caught out walking in one of these downpours and were able to shelter from the worst rain. The trek is through some wonderfully isolated areas with superb mountainous scenery. We met a handful of other visitors at Choquequirao which is a really impressive site, much bigger in area than Machu Pichu, but not as excavated. Until we joined the road on Day 8 we were largely on our own. Views of Machu Pichu on Day 11 were great & when we got the bus to Machu Pichu we were met with cloud, which eerily cleared to give an excellent view by 9am. We booked the extra ticket to go up Huayna Picchu which we did after the guided tour by Henri. This gave great views and a chance to escape some of the crowds. Note that it is a oneway system to tour Machu Pichu, so you cannot return to any of the ruins. On the last day we didn't get back to Cusco until 7pm (the direct train to Cusco doesn't run at this time of year) and as usual a team meal was organised for 8pm. We had booked on the Jungle extension which meant that we had 1 hour to get our washing/kit sorted out (which eventually the hotel agreed to organise), we then needed to be repacked ready for a 9am leave the next morning. We would recommend an extra day before the jungle extension or to bring enough spare clothing to avoid this rushed turnaround.

Great cycling, warm and friendly people and stunning scenery
Cape Town and the Winelands Cycle Tour
The trip itinerary was a great mix of all the areas of Cape Town and surrounding it. We had a great route which took in the many varied landscapes above and beyond what we expected. We felt totally safe throughout the trip and the people were warm and friendly everywhere we went. The guide was a great source of information on all things flora fauna and geology and had a great knowledge of the roads throughout the trip. Only thing that needed slight attention was the bikes which although adequate were obviously at the end of their season and needed a service prior to the ride. An easily achievable detail.

Outstanding holiday trekking to Everest Base Camp
Everest Base Camp Trek
This was an exceptional trip and well organised by KE. Our head Sherpa guide, Prem was phenomenal, with a wealth of knowledge and experience. The scenery was stunning and the locals are very friendly. I would recommend KE as a tour company to anyone, their professionalism is exemplary. Would also definitely recommend to those who have not travelled much nor been on an adventure like this before, doing plenty of research and getting tips on how to pack lightly, but still have some comforts. Getti ng the right clothing & equipment - being well prepared, makes all the difference.

Demanding but highly rewarding trek
Choquequirao to Machu Picchu
Extremely well organised trek, trekking crew well up to and beyond Nepalese standards. Henri was a superb guide, ably assisted by Marcella, and was a mine of information about the culture and history of Peru and its flora and fauna, as well as setting a sensible pace that kept us together. Possibly the best food I've ever eaten on trek. Keep the Deet handy, lots of biting insects. No need for a thermarest, the mattresses provided were thick and comfortable. Don't underestimate the 1400 metre climb to Choquequirao on the second day, it's a hard ascent but it's good to get the toughest day done early in the trek. Overall, if you want a challenging trek, beautiful scenery, culture and lots of Inka history, this trek's for you.

Amazing
Everest Base Camp Trek
Well organised and very professionally run (our Guide from start to finish - Raj was absoultely brilliant; he and his assistants Rai, Bim and Sudeep could not have been better). Accommodation was as good as is possible on the trails and we were always well informed with the plan for the next day and the food at the teahouses was good too (not gourmet but then we didn't expect that anyway - it's all got to be carried up by Yak, horse, donkey or Sherpa!) Highly recommended - there's a lot of walking, some quite hard going, but then that's what you should expect on a trip like this. If you've ever thought you might like it then you will absolutely love it; completely brilliant trip. (Made extra special by my 11 companions on the trek, we all got along really well and enjoyed each others company - this bit's the luck of the draw but it helped make a good trip truly great for me.)

A super holiday in a wonderful country. Go as soon as you are able to.
Sri Lanka End to End Road Cycle Tour
I thoroughly enjoyed this trip. it was a great feeling of satisfaction cycling from North to South. Most other companies concentrate only on the hillier areas, but it was a treat to visit Jaffna too. The nicest cycling was obviously around the tea plantations and Kandy, but the longer flatter days at the beginning of the trip were rewarding too. All of the people we met en route were deligthful, and little things like stopping for fresh coconut juice towards the end of a long day were simply won derful. The hotels were a lot higher end than I had expected (I normally do trekking trips). Food was good and plenty of opportunities to sample local stuff. Little extras such as safari, climbing up the rock and visiting temples added to the trip. My only criticism is that the roads were more crowded than I had expected with lots of tuk-tuks and dogs. This was Sri Lankan New year though so that might have been why. Guides were brilliant - always one and the front and one at the back, and they kept us very safe. It is a super trip and a fantastic way to see the country. Rest day in Kandy was good - and the crumbly colonial hotel very original. The trip finished just before the tragic events, but I actually stayed longer and was out there when it happened, and they were all very concerned for my safety, even though the trip had finished. Sri Lanka will need tourists even more desperately now, so please do visit this beautiful island as soon as it is deemed safe again - you will not regret it.

Excellent Trip
Reunion Island Paradise
Reunion Island is a beautiful place. The trip itinerary is perfect to cover many areas of it. Our guide Claire was the best guide I have had on a trip to date. She was knowledgeable about the area, she shared a huge amount of information about local flora and fauna and she was passionate about the island. The accommodation during the trek was basic but good and we were well fed. The hotels at either end were good. I would say it is more expensive for meals and drinks than the UK so you need to b udget for that. The only way you could improve this trip is by adding a couple of extra days to enable a visit to the wild south to see the lava flows , lava tunnels and vanilla plantations.

Stepping out in Italy
Trails of the Amalfi Coast
Amalfi in mid-April was perhaps not quite as warm as we expected (all the locals wearing winter clothes) but a good temperature for walking apart from the day when we climbed Vesuvius and nearly froze! A great mix of walks with staggeringingly beautiful views and not too strenuous, although don't underestimate the effect on the knees of hundreds of steps. It was lovely to be based in the hills above Amalfi away from the crowds in a very rural and self-sufficient community. The array of loca l produce for the daily picnic was staggering. We hadn't appreciated that, although not far from Amalfi, the bus journey took an hour to negotiate the myriad of hairpin bends. Not for the faint hearted! A really lovely holiday.

Extraordinarily amazing introduction to the arctic circle!!
Sweden Arctic Family Adventure
From start to finish a truly eye opening experience. Hotel, food, trips and most of all the people were truly wonderful. Food-Be ready for strong flavours with plenty on the plate, as a 6'2" yeti I struggled to finish my food a number of times. Our daughter loved everything from the Reindeer stew on day 1 through to the Arctic Char at the end of the trip without doubt. There was no choice on the food as the options were spread throughout the week. Kids may struggle if picky and if so t here is the option of burger or pasta but you will need to request this. Again our 11 year old loved the food and treated it as part of the new experience of the holiday. Rooms-Warm, clean and functional with the extremely useful drying/warming cupboard that came in handy, nice warm comfy hotel very close to town should you wish a wander in. All the guides without exception were kind, polite and extremely knowledgeable with the outstanding parts being the snowmobiling and most of all the dog sledding where we were fortunate to be on our own with Dana and 11 dogs which was the absolute highlight (being dog mad helped) and we are now planning to go back in a few years time to go on a full on dog sledding expedition.

A terrific tropical trekking holiday
Reunion Island Paradise
La Réunion is an amazing island in the middle of the Indian Ocean....and offers wonderful trekking. The landscape changes from lush, forested valleys to waterfalls to barren volcanic wastes....and there's the beach - swimming, snorkelling, dolphin cruises etc etc - at the end. The trek was very well planned: after an initial night in a hotel in the capital, we had 3 days trekking and 2 nights of 'Gîte' - a kind of 'refuge', basic but comfortable and with hearty food. ( If you happen to like rum, this is a trip for you - each meal began with a rum punch, finished with a 'rhum arrangé', basically rum flavoured with all sorts of fruit and herbs. Alongside the local beer Dodo, every meal was an event!). Then a rest day in Cilaos for chilling (we were soooo lucky, as there was a huge thunderstorm that day. Loudest thunder I've ever heard in my life. We were told that 1661 bolts of lightning were registered on La Réunion on that day!). Then another 4 days trekking and 3 nights Gîte. These were the real highlights - climbing Piton des Neiges, the highest peak in the Indian Ocean (3070m), to watch the sunrise; walking through the forest to the astounding waterfall in the Trou de Fer; then climbing one of the most active volcanoes in the world, the Piton de la Fournaise. Nothing prepares you for the stark lava landscape, the craters, the lava tubes, the extraordinary colours. The last 2 nights were back on the coast ...so, pool, Indian Ocean, snorkelling, lovely restaurants with live music (Café Metis in Ermitage-les-Bains superb). We also did a helicopter flight with Hélilagon, which was stunning, but you have to be lucky with the clouds - the weather can change in an instant in the island!). Tips: - wax earplugs are an absolute must, given the dormitory style of sleeping and the inevitable snorers. - meals in hotels/restaurants are expensive, as indicated in the trip notes. But the inclusive food at the gîtes was very good. Only the breakfasts are poor - a baguette, butter and jam, and coffee. Not ideal for a strenuous trek. High calorie snacks are a good idea....and fruit/veg if possible from a local supermarket. - water was not a problem. The tap water could be drunk safely. I took purification tablets and hardly used them at all. Hydration was key, given the high humidity levels. - the Pass the Pigs game proved hugely popular and really bonded the group. I can't explain how happy our Guide Claire was, when she won! - if you want a few souvenirs, look no further than the Grand Marché in St Denis (on the first day......but you can get some in Cilaos as well). It is a huge bazaar of artisan goods...and very good value. We had a super group of Trekkers - very experienced indeed - and an excellent guide, Claire Balada, which meant that the whole trip was harmonious and full of high spirits.
