amazing high mountain scenery in exciting destination for adventure travel
Trekking the Turkestan Mountains
Some fantastic high mountain scenery which is dramatic as it is beautiful. The upland pastures were full of stunning wild flowers. Lots of river & stream wading (approximately 20 times in the 10 days) through gushing glacial melt water provided plenty of excitement together with many river "hops". Our 2 mountain guides were always at hand to provide reassurance & assistance. Appropriate sandals & walking poles essential! Overall we enjoyed the trip & had a lot of fun in a smallish (10 pax) very cosmopolitan group. This country has a great deal of potential for adventure travel. Our 2 mountain guides were very enthusiastic & were excellent company. However, they were let down by the trekking / tour agency KE contract into. In some respects the fixed camps worked well. The tents were always up & waiting for us, & because we were one of the first groups of what is a very short season we were using in effect brand new tents. The fixed camps are run by a manager & a cook, normally couples there for 2 months. It was surprising there was such a lack of consistency with how the kitchens were run & the quality of the food provided & cooked (it ranged from mediocre at best to appalling at worst). Do take a plentiful supply of your own snacks to ensure you don't go hungry. Some of the kitchens seemed to have things fairly well sorted whereas others frankly were chaotic (even the pony men thought it was a joke) so much so that on one camp our guides (to their credit) prepared an evening meal after being so embarrassed with the previous day's meal. I suggest KE's product manager for this trip needs to have an urgent review of the specification you require with your provider with particular reference to what is expected at the fixed camps (which are operated by your agency) concerning food / meals, camp hygiene (some camps lacked hand washing water although hand sanitizer was sometimes available - members need to take their own), provision of drinking water at camp (some camps had this sorted with up to 3 large thermos flasks on the go from the kitchen, others were chaotic with only 1 thermos being used forthe entire group), & group medical kit (what KE wants it to include & KE's expectations of the guides' medical knowledge or written information within the kit for them to refer to - in my opinion it is wise for members to ensure they have within their own kit any emergency medication they deem appropriate to take as once in the mountains you are up to 6 days walking or horse riding from a roadhead). Assuming KE can get some movement in what is delivered at camp this trip has a lot going for it, you really get a feel of being "on the edge" of dramatic yet achievable adventure. There is the almost daily thrill of looking over the next high pass & whilst some of the itinerary is walked out in reverse that works well. Be prepared for some tiring travelling to & from the Turkestan mountain region, consider going out to the country a day before the group itinerary.

Excellent introduction to glacier mountaineering in the high Alps
Italian Summit Climber
This was my first time to wear harness and crampons and to be roped up crossing glaciers. Excellent tuition in these aspects was provided by our guide Kathy. The trip took us well above 4,000 metres in the Monte Rosa range. Two days at the start were set aside for steady acclimatisation. While this enabled me to complete most of the objectives, I wasn't able to take part in the final push to the highest level (over 4,600 metres). I could have done with a bit more time for acclimatisation, b ut then I am 68 years of age and probably not in peak physical condition. The two (much younger and fitter) members of the party had no problem and they achieved all they set out to do Anyway I thoroughly enjoyed the trip and would recommend it to anyone who loves being in the mountains and would like to extend their experience to include the use of crampons, ice axe, and ropes on glaciers plus the chance to reach new heights. Just don't underestimate the need to be in good physical condition.

The thousand faces of the Auvergne - unmissable
Walks and Wine in the Auvergne
The Walks and Wine in the Auvergne title does not do this trip full justice. Thanks to an outstanding and knowledgable guide and really varied programme, this was about walking, volcanoes and geology, plants and flora, culture in Roman times and more recently, churches and cathedrals, warm hospitality from local people and local food specialities. An immersive and highly engaging tour showing highlights of a multi-faceted region. Accommodation gave a true flavour, though the initial hotel in Cle rmont Ferrand could have been more attractive and inviting. Walks were well chosen and led, and the picnics amidst the incredible landscape were a memorable feature. We came away feeling we had the freedom of the great Auvergne region and plenty of ideas and motivation to get to know parts even better.

A super holiday
Tour du Mont Blanc Family Adventure

Alison was a patient and knowledgeable guide. Some days were hard work so please do not ignore the minimum fitness guide. My 14 year old daughter and wife thought it was the best holiday yet. Take plenty of clean socks. 10 year olds may struggle so use careful judgement based on your child’s fitness and maturity.

A fantastic walking holiday
Walking the Wild and Untamed Lofoten Islands
We went on the week long Lofoten Islands walking holiday, at the end of July. First of all, I must say hat we were very lucky with the weather, with only one half-day requiring waterproof gear. Our guides, Aerik and Kristen were first-class and were able to tailor the days to suit the different abilities/fitness levels in the group. Accommodation, food and organisation was excellent, and we had a fantastic week. We were a group of 16, most from UK, but from a variety of countries and everyone go t on very well. You do need to be fit to get the most ut of this week, with lots of steep walking. Also, swimming in the sea (not compulsory). We then had a couple of days in Oslo at the end, which was very enjoyable, and although Oslo is an expensive city, it doesn't have to break the bank. Well done, KE.

Great Trekking trip
Choquequirao to Machu Picchu
The trip was everything you could hope for in a trekking holiday. Victor was a great guide , friendly , knowledgeable , and well organised. Let you go at your own pace, so you never felt under pressure. Excellent support crew , plenty of fantastic food every day , which considering the remoteness of the locations was impressive. There was even a huge cake on the last day ! The scenery was everything you could hope for , helped no doubt by great weather. The walking was hard , but not overly diff icult as , there was plenty of time allowed. Choquequirao was amazing , we had the entire site almost to ourselves.( The llamas terrace , just blew your mind !) With plans in place to build a cable car to near the site , I'm sure it won't be long until it will be a major tourist site , so we felt privileged at being able to experience it in such solitude. Machu Picchu was as it was claimed to be be , stunning building , amazing views , and imperious llamas who think they own the place ! You need to be reasonably fit to do this trip ( and properly enjoy it ) , though not necessary super fit , the altitude was noticeable at times , but nothing that that really slowed you down. Does get cold of an evening so a good sleeping bag essential .

Fantastic holiday packed with activities
Slovenian Family Adventure - Julian Alps

Ales and Jernij our guides were fantastic! Fully engaged in making the holiday as amazing as possible. They were brilliant with the children ( 11 & 9 years ) who both had a great time. Lots of different activities all as described but on different days to minimise any impact by the weather. We loved this holiday, our children are adventurous and this ticked all the boxes, Impossible to choose a “best day” as all so good!

Amazing tour!
Trekking The Transylvanian Alps

Our tour was fantastic. Even though it rained and was super foggy, our trip was fantastic. This is a true “7” rating, and not for a beginner. The accommodations are as described, and the towns where the hotels are located are very cute. Our guide was fantastic, the people on the tour interesting and fun to be with, and the hikes each day outstanding. Romania is a great place to visit. I highly recommend KE for this trip.

Very easy walking trip through beautiful countries
Baltic Trails Adventure
This was a decent trip. The Baltics are beautiful and all of the hotels except the one in Talinn were decent. The Tallinn hotel was horrible and I hope KE never uses it again. While the countries were beautiful and we got to see a lot of great sights, we all agreed that this should have been labeled a level 1, rather than level 2. A lot of the time KE counted as walking was really standing around in a city tour, with a total of about 1/4 of the amount of time walking as promised. This is much mo re of a sightseeing vacation than an exercise vacation. I recommend adding 1-2 days before the trip starts in Vilnius. We did that and covered a lot of interesting sights that the tour did not have time to include. I think the itinerary would be better if they did 2 nights in Klaeipida to give appropriate time for the Curonian spit (we were way too rushed through this amazing gem, but the nature hiking the two days we got out into national parks in Latvia and Estonia was superb, especially the Bog hiking day. Our guide was pleasant and tried really hard to make everyone comfortable. He missed one of the food stops because he didn't have the same itinerary as us, but otherwise, the trip was true to the itinerary. This is a good trip if you want to pack a lot of sights and cities into a 10 day trip, but not for you if you want to walk for 3-4 hours per day.

KE Adventure reply

Thank you for your review. We are pleased that you enjoyed the Baltic states and that you thought this was a good trip. It is a new holiday for us and we are sure it will get even better as a result of your feedback and suggestions. The trip is designed to be an easy paced 'highlights' holiday with active city walking tours and some easy trail walks of maximum 3 hours. We are changing the hotel we use in Talinn.

A great adventure with stunning views
Italian Summit Climber
A great trip experiencing the summits and traversing the glaciers in the Italian Alps. We were incredibly lucky with the weather and had stunning views with great visibility. Safety was of paramount concern to our guide Kathy, and she was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. She also instilled a sense of self-belief and calm in the whole group whilst we were ascending (and descending) some of the more exposed summits. We were most impressed with the food - we weren't expecting the variety o r four courses at each of the huts and it was all very tasty. The Orestes Hut is vegetarian/vegan and organic. The equipment hired was all in excellent condition and on the first night during the evening meal Kathy was really helpful in talking through exactly what was in her rucksack. If in doubt over packing something take it to Stafal and the guide will advise before you set off. One extra item I found useful that isn't on the trip notes is a buff. Note there is no cash machine in Stafal and only a small deli/shop to buy snacks. On all days we did all the walking after breakfast before heading to the next hut for a late lunch (relative to the very early start/breakfast) - so I recommend taking some hill snacks with you. On Day 2 we only had time for a quick snack at the Orestes Hut before heading out to Alta Luce so there was no opportunity for lunch on this day due to the weather forecast - be prepared for this. Take enough cash to allow for spending up 4-6 euros per litre on water in the huts (Gnifetti and Margherita) in addition to the lunch allowance in the trip notes. Marsh tea (fruit tea) was available free each morning at breakfast. If you want a 1:25000 hiking map of the area you can buy one for 8 euros in Stafal.

An excellent and challenging traverse of the Picos
Traverse of the Picos de Europa
Donna and I really enjoyed the Traverse of the Picos de Europa. It was a brilliant trip. The walking was suitably challenging. The scenery we passed through was nothing short of spectacular. Rosanna our guide was really great, she was very caring great fun to be with. Our group were all well matched in fitness though Rosanna set a pace considering us all. Daisy from the K.E. office was a pleasure to be with, she was bubbly and very easy company. I am sure she will go a long way with K.E. The acc ommodation and food on the trip was exceptional the hut food particularly good. With the exception of the final night poor shop bought fish and chips served cold and ordinary pork loine. Not really Spanish at all. Overall a trip I can heartily recommend to any fit walker.

Fantastic wilderness trek
Kungsleden Trek - The Kings Trail of Sweden
This is a trek which for me encapsulated wilderness, space, silence and friendliness. I have done numerous KE trips but for me everyone you met on the trail was so friendly, all wanted to talk and it was great not to meet another person from the UK the entire trip! Cecilia the trip guide looked after us from the moment she met us at the airport, extremely knowledgeable which shows the positive aspect of a local guide, set a good pace, happy to tweek the last trekking day so we could start later after the summit day and divided people up into the cook crew etc so as everyone could take responsibility for helping out at the start and end of the day. We had a small group of 7 which was nice and fantastic weather although at times too hot, I would recommend a camelback or similar for drinking in addition to a bottle or mug, you can drink from all running water but especially on summit day water is difficult to come by and at times difficult to use your hands to faff about with a bottle. If you want to shop try to buy stuff in the shop in Abisko, it’s the best you’ll find on the trip and you can put anything you don’t want to carry in the kit bag being transported to the end, one word of warning sweden is definitely going down the no cash route almost everywhere is card only. Kit wish definitely no need for a head torch, take a camelback, and probably a mosquito head over they are vicious! Most of us ended up carrying between 15-17kg when including the food supplies over the first part of the trip. Enjoy the sauna they are great as is the chilly plunge in the river. Overall a great trip, great leader would be interesting to follow the route in winter on a dogsledding holiday. One thing to bear in mind it’s a short window of time between flights especially as anything leaving the UK is always late, we had to literals sprint through the airport to catch the connecting flight so may be worth travelling a day early and checking out Stockholm.

Amazing walks in beautiful remote mountains
Through the Heart of the Balkans

Great walking holiday in beautiful remote mountains. Scenery stunning. So many different alpine flowers. Saw at most a handful of other walkers each day. Accommodation better than expected with showers available every day and access to our bags every night. Michel, our guide, was very knowledgeable on local history and culture. Highly recommend this trip.

A unique experience and such great fun
Family Adventures in the Algarve
We really had no idea what we were getting ourselves into, but this was one of the best holidays ever - totally not a chilled, relaxing holiday but so much fun! Violeta and Jonathon make an awesome team along with their enthusiastic, helpful and tolerant volunteers. Our accommodation was perfect; quirky with everything we needed. The food was sensational (best food ever on a holiday) using lots of homegrown, seasonal produce. As a vegan family we didn’t quite know what to expect but Violeta ca ters for everyone – she is amazing #veganheaven #vegetarianheaven #fishloverheaven #meatloverheaven – everyone loved the food. And after a day of adventure it was delightful to sit and read on the veranda listening to Violeta and her helpers in the kitchen working away to their eclectic and perfect music choices. The activities were brilliant, and our favourites were cycling, kayaking, bodyboarding and hiking as well as chilling on the beach, eating ice-cream and the speedboat trip. The beauty of this holiday was the opportunity to be active and try new activities but with everything organised to perfection. Jonathon was amazing, knowledgeable, experienced and encouraging – everything was sorted for you timings, transport, equipment, lessons, lunch. Jonathon had everything arranged spot on each day and gave. This holiday was a unique experience and such great fun….but it was only after the holiday ended that we realised how fantastic and unforgettable it really was.

Fantastic cycling and sightseeing hloiday
Bali and Java – Cycle the Islands of the Gods
Our first cycling /adventure holiday but hopefully not our last. We are a couple in our 60s and although some of the cycling was really tough for us, with the encouragement of our guides ram and wayan we completed the tour even though we were slower than the other 4 members of our group (they were younger). The inventory is close to what we actually did but some of the climbs were higher than published. Great homestays in java and good hotels The whole trip was really well organised with a terri fic support crew. Trip was everything we could have asked for. Tough cycling but Beautiful scenery and a great group of people we shared the experience with.

Simply put, a great experience.
Best of the Tour du Mont Blanc
This was out first hike in the high mountains and it was quite a challenge, but certainly worthwhile. To be immersed in this wonderful landscape was truly fabulous and the reason we elected to go. It did not disappoint. The itinerary, accommodation, and transfers, all of which was arranged by KE were all excellent, as were the meals provided by those hotels. To top it all up, our group really gelled well and it made for an unforgettable week. Best of all, was our guide Ronan, who kept us enterta ined for hours. A true character.
