Overview

We start our amazing Southern African overlanding adventure holiday at one of the world’s largest and most majestic of all waterfalls - Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River. From this thunderous beginning we travel west into the wilderness of Namibia's Caprivi Strip, cutting through Angola and Botswana, famous for its migrating elephants and packs of wild painted dog. Our next stop is the vast, wildlife rich pans of Etosha National Park. Where the waterholes bustle with African big game we are sure to get our first glimpse of big cats, dusty elephants as well as antelope and giraffe. Moving deeper into Namibia we visit Swakopmund, and the stunning desert sand dunes at Sossusvlei. There is no light polution here whatsoever, so there are great opportunities for star gazing in the evenings with inky black skies overhead. Continuing our loop we enter Botswana with a stop in the Kalahari desert with the San Bushmen people, before we venture on to discover the myriad wildlife of the Okavango Delta. Exploring the waterways by traditional mokoro canoe is a truly magically experience, and allows us to silently approach wildlife in a way that just isn't possible in a land vehicle. Botswana's Chobe National Park provides the last stage of our explorations. Rich grasslands sustain a high concentration of wildlife which we see from our boat safaris. Our overlanding adventure of over 4300km is complete with a return to Livingstone, having seen some of the best of these incredibly wondrous and diverse countries in the southern hemisphere.

Everything in Africa is on a big scale, and to cover the ground necessary, your journey across Southern Africa includes several long drives accompanied by Africa's spectacular scenery. Such drives, including your game drives, can often be on dirt tracks, graded roads and also tar highways. The driving times are indicated on each day. These times do not include stops along the way. We ensure that regular comfort breaks are taken, and stops try to be scheduled to visit interesting towns or sights.

Included in the itinerary are a variety of walks. These walks can be on paved surfaces, uneven sandy dunes or rocky terrain and are always accompanied by your experienced guide. Each walk is paced with time for your guide to interpret the environment around you. On some walks, it is vital to keep within the group in case of an animal encounter. When in the Okavango Delta we travel by mokoro canoe. These are traditional dug-out canoes and we may have to walk in the shallows to board at water level.

The accommodation will range from chalet style lodges through to permanent tented lodges with en-suite facilities. There may be a bar/restaurant available and some lodges may have a swimming pool. When in the Okavango you will have 2 nights wild camping. Most of the meals are prepared by the guides and it is good group etiquette to help with preparation and washing up on these days and this is usually done on rotation - it's all part of the adventure and when everyone puts in a little effort the trip runs smoothly. This journey is suitable for the adventure traveller looking to experience some of Africa's most special safari experiences.

Why KE?

Today is yours to spend at leisure around Livingstone and the mighty Victoria Falls. Close to the falls are several handicraft markets which are great for some souvenir shopping. If you are feeling a little more adventurous or wish to see the falls from a different angle, you may wish to consider one of the extra activities that are available to book and payable locally. These include white water rafting or half-day canoeing the Zambezi. Whatever you chose you'll have a fabulous first full day on this incredible journey through Southern Africa. Depending on season, water levels of the falls will vary (late November to early April is the wet season, with the remainder of the year being dry).

After breakfast, we leave Zambia for the natural wonderland of Namibia. After the straightforward border formalities at Sesheke we drive onto the Caprivi Strip. Wedged between the borders of Botswana and Angola, the Caprivi Strip provides a significant habitat for the endangered African Wild Dog and is also a vital corridor for elephants moving between Namibia, Botswana, Angola and Zambia. In the late afternoon we take to the water for a boat safari cruise on the Kavango River in this remote and beautiful region. Approximate drive time: 4 hours.

Enjoying breakfast with the chorus of African river-life our exploration of Caprivi leads us further into the area. The area sees many rivers and permanent waters, attracting big herds of elephants in the dry season. Lion, leopard and hyena are present, as well as the majestic giraffe munching on tall trees. Hippos, buffalo and zebra are usually seen - a true feast of the eyes and binoculars in the early stages of this marvellous safari holiday. Approximate drive time: 3 hours

This morning we have time to appreciate the river and we hope to spot many of the resident bird species such as the Lesser Jacana, Racket-Tailor Roller and Coppery Tailed Coucal. Although a rare spot, Pel's fishing owls are also resident in this region. Moving on from the Caprivi Strip, we continue our journey west skirting the border of Angola along the River Kavango and onto our accommodation near the Namibian town of Rundu. Luck being with us we can enjoy a spectacular sunset whilst sipping our sundowner. Approximate drive time: 3 hours

We set off this morning to Etosha National Park. Todays drive will give us a very good impression on the size and vast scale of Namibia as we travel south along straight roads. We pass a few small villages along the way and we have plenty of comfort stops to take in the scenery and enjoy lunch. Etosha is locally known as 'the great white place of dry water'. Our accommodation lies on the boundary of the park and once we have arrived we can cool off in the grounds and enjoy a refreshing sundowner before dinner. Approximate drive time: 8 - 9 hours including a game drive if there are no delays.

This is Big Game country. Four of the Big 5 are found here: lion, elephant, leopard and a healthy population of black rhino. Just the buffalo are missing. The central feature of the Park is the Etosha Pan, a 6000 square kilometre salt-flat, which can manifest itself either as a parched white desert or as a lush green land of plenty according to the season. Many of the rare animal species manage to survive here, such as the black rhino, the roan antelope and black-faced impala, which we may be fortunate to see on our afternoon game drive into the park. Etosha is, without doubt, Africa's most distinct National Park.

During infrequent flooding, the pan attracts thousands of flamingos and other wading birds, although the water is so mineral-rich that it is undrinkable. The key to life here is the occurrence of underground springs which form waterholes on the edge of the pan. Together with the savannah grassland that they nourish, these springs enable more than 110 species of mammals to exist in an otherwise hostile environment. One of the highlights in dry season will be the chance to view big cats and game such as giraffe, zebra and several antelope species, gathering at one of the many waterholes. The rainy season at Etosha extends from November into March and April. This is a season of plenty, when grazing animals and their predators are widespread across the park as they seek out better grazing. Regardless of the season, your experienced leader, will endeavour to seek out the best of Etosha's wildlife during your game drives. In the evening we return to our accommodation for the African chorus and a traditional sundowner.

Today we cross Namibia's desert landscapes getting a real taste of a prehistorical land in the area which has ruggedly beautiful, untamed, stark plains, petrified forests as well as the peaks of the Brandberg Massif. The name Brandberg means 'fire mountain' which refers to the glowing red colour of the rocks, seen at sunset. With a dense concentration of San Bush art, dating back several thousand years, we walk with a local guide see the famous 'White Lady' rock painting. This evening our accommodation is situated at the dry Ugab River, home to the rare desert elephants. Slightly smaller in size, with wider feet to adapt to desert conditions, desert elephants are often seen with broken or worn tusks as they are used to dig through hard dry ground in search of water. Crossing the incredible plains our destination today is the breezy Atlantic town of Swakopmund. We meet the Altantic coast just south of the famous Skeleton Coast of Namibia where we stop at the Cape Cross Seal Reserve, the world's largest breeding colony of Cape Fur Seals. A short drive from here is our destination. Cool breezes, palm-lined streets and an ambiance reminiscent of a small German village, Swakopmund offers a distinct and refreshing Namibian experience. Here we have a couple of nights away from the canvas and stay in a guesthouse. Approximate drive time: 3-4 hours

Arguably Namibia's premier holiday resort, the town of Swakopmund was founded in the last decade of the nineteenth century, as the principal deepwater port of German South West Africa. Today it is a rather unusual place, with a quaint and atmospheric feel, sandwiched as it is between the Namib Desert and the cold Atlantic Ocean. It is as if a piece of 1950's Bavaria has somehow been cast ashore on the harsh Skeleton Coast. Amongst the distinctly Germanic architecture, an eclectic community have made Swakopmund their own, from artists to world travellers and big-game fishermen to stately African tribesmen, all contribute to the distinct character. We spend the day at leisure in this wild and whacky port-town. There are lots of activities that can be arranged locally, such as boat trips in search of dolphins, or to visit a nearby seal colony, ocean canoe safari, dune-boarding and even scenic flights over the Namib and along the Skeleton Coast - these are entirely optional and payable directly. Alternatively, you may choose to take it easy, visit the Crystal Galley, do a township tour or stroll along the beach.

Moving through the ever changing landscapes we make our way to the edge of the Namib-Naukluft National Park, the second largest game park in Africa (after the Central Kalahari), with a total area of just under 50000 km2. Here we find the iconic sharp-ridged Sossusvlei Dunes of the Namib Desert. Argued to be the highest dunes in the world, their ever-changing colours make for wonderful photographic opportunities from sunrise to sunset! At the accommodation, we discover the true meaning of being 'star-struck' under African desert skies. Approximate actual drive time: 5hrs. The desert scenery is varied but the road is rough gravel, so with a few stops it's a travel day of approximately 7hrs 30mins.

We visit Dead Vlei (the place of the iconic Namibia photo) and walk for 3-4km. Time permitting we might be able to ascend the highest sand dune of the area - Big Daddy (325m). For those who do not want to walk, there are optional 4WD vehicles (operated on a shuttle service by the park and payable locally) that can drive you in to the bottom of the dunes. Walking in these dunes is a true experience and provides us with superb views up and down the Sesriem Canyon of the Tsauchab River. If we are lucky, we may spot an ostrich or even a jackal. We then walk up Dune 45, it is absolutely stunning. Going down is a lot quicker and easier than going up! It also gives us a sense of scale and enormity as these dunes reach almost unbroken, from here to the Atlantic coast. We also visit the Sesriem Canyon, and it is a place of arid beauty. The dreamscape stretches from towering lunar rock formations through to a natural sphinx formation close to the canyon mouth. With ample time to catch the ever-changing colours of a Namib Desert sunset, we return to our accommodation for a second night of desert skies.

Located in a basin between the Khomas Highlands and Eros Mountains, Windhoek's charm is its fusion of African and European cultures. With a cosmopolitan atmosphere, we drive from African bush into the heart of a Germanic colonial era. More of a town than a bustling capital city, Windhoek's friendly centre, makes for easy exploration. On arrival we have the opportunity to spend some time seeking out souvenirs, or to simply admire the city's Neo-Baroque cathedral spires and colonial architecture. We have dinner together at a local restaurant. Windhoek is a wonderful city break within this safari adventure. Approximate drive time: 4-5 hours

Departing from the dreamland of Namibia we cross into the beauty of Botswana and head for the heart of the Kalahari. Before leaving the bushland we take a cool morning walk with the San Bushmen and learn more of their ancient and fascinating way of life. Bidding farewell to our San hosts, we drive onwards to the Okavango gateway town of Maun, where there is the opportunity to have experience free time in Maun. You may prefer to relax and take a dip in the pool or explore this capital town of Ngamiland. Alternatively there is the option to take a light aircraft flight over the Okavango Delta (payable locally). Maun has a wonderful laid back atmosphere and also provides a chance to participate in a spot of shopping for local handicrafts, as we prepare to depart the delta region of Botswana. Approximate drive time: 4-5 hours.

Transferring into our open 4WD vehicles, we will drive for approximately 2 hours into the Okavango Delta. Every year, over 11,000 cubic kilometres of water flows from the Angolan Highlands into the Delta, making it the world's largest inland Delta. During our two days in the Delta we explore this wonderful wetland by way of a traditional dug-out canoe, the mokoro. Whilst the Delta is a wondrous-wetland, there are countless islands that are home to a vast number of wildlife species. Being gently poled along in our mokoro, provides the perfect opportunity to move within a safe distance of the wildlife without disturbing them as they go about their daily business. Such idyllic isolation of the Okavango makes for the most unusual encounters with the larger, iconic residents. Hippos, elephants, crocodiles and further down the food chain, antelope can be seen as we glide across Africa's most famous of waterways. Conditions today will dictate the timings of our Delta exploration. We make our way to our wild camp here in the bush. After the traditional African 'sundowner' we help out with the preparation of dinner and afterwards we can settle down for the night in the Delta accompanied by the soundtrack of croaking frogs. Transfer time to the Delta: 2 hours

The best time of the day in Africa is the early morning and with the sounds of the dawn chorus all around us we set out in the relative cool on a nature walk to explore this wonderful wetland. Before the walk our guides will give a safety briefing. We may encounter elephants or even lions on the walk and it is important to listen to the briefing and to follow the instructions of the guides. Returning to our camp for a well deserved brunch we have time to relax during the heat of the day and perhaps take a swim in the clear waters. We head out again into the Delta where we can enjoy another beautiful sunset before returning to camp or we may take another walk. Back at camp there will be an opportunity to take a bucket shower before dinner and spending our second night surrounded by the nocturnal murmurs of the Okavango.

Driving out of the Delta we may be lucky enough to encounter some wildlife en-route before preparing for another dramatic change of scenery. The shimmering salt pans of Makgadikgadi (pronounced ma-h'adee-h'adee), provide a glorious illusion of an endless plain. During the wet season when the pans transform into a valuable refuge of grassland, great herds of wildebeest and flamingos flock here in their thousands. However, in the dry season the expansive landscape transforms into a desolate and empty flat space from horizon to horizon, an eerily gigantic place to explore and appreciate. Although very little flora exists within the pans, Baobab trees thrive in this environment and have become very useful landmarks when navigating across this barren land. Approximate drive time: 4 hours.

The Chobe River is a stunning feature of our time in Chobe and is a crucial lifeline to one of the greatest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. Chobe is famed for herds of elephant which reside in the National Park. During the year the elephant population can vary from 500-50,000 and are most likely to be found on the banks of the Chobe, cooling off. Owing to its year-round supply of water, Chobe provides a permanent source of water for the elephant population of the Kalahari, known for their short brittle tusks due to calcium deficiency in the soil. Taking to the water in the afternoon, we embark on a sunset safari cruise to optimise our chances of meeting these majestic animals. Finishing the safari with the tradition of a sundowner, we return to our accommodation for our final evening. Approximate drive time: 4-5 hours

20 breakfasts, 17 lunches and 11 dinners are included. Non-included meals are in the towns of Livingston, Rundu, Swakopmund, Windhoek, Maun, Makdagdikgadi and Kasane where we try out local restaurants. We recommend you budget £10 - 15 for each non-included meals.

Water from the taps may not be drinkable in all locations on this trip - please check with your guide. We recommend taking water purification tablets and a reusable bottle with a filter such as Water-to-Go, which can both be used to help make safe other water sources. Please note that we do not encourage the purchase of single use plastic bottles.

The majority of the meals are provided. Breakfast will be cereals and yoghurt, with coffee, tea, toast and the occasional cooked breakfast. Lunch will typically be picnic style - cold meats, cheese, salads, bread, rolls and fruit. Dinner will be potjies (traditional stews), braais (barbecue), stir fries, pasta dishes, curries etc. Very often cooking will be on an open fire. Fresh produce will be used wherever possible and fruit squash, tea and coffee will be served with breakfast and dinner. Many of the meals are prepared by the guides and it is good group etiquette to help with preparation and washing up on these days and this is usually done on rotation. Some meals are taken at the accommodation or in local restaurants. Special dietary requirements (vegetarian or allergies) can usually be catered for, but it is essential that this information is received on booking. There is one cool box available for the group to put your own drinks in. Stops at supermarkets are regular to pick up supplies such as alcohol and soft drinks.

This holiday has 18 nights staying at variety of different guesthouses, lodges, tented lodges and hotels. Often they have an African style to them with colourful traditional blankets, ornaments and smiling friendly staff. The rooms are twin/double with mainly en suite facilities. Some of the accommodations have a bar and a swimming pool.

When at a tented lodge you will stay in a classic canvas safari tent with twin beds, en suite facilities. It is built on a permanent base (concrete or wood platform) and might have a thatch roof. There is usually a main lodge area with a bar, and possibly a swimming pool and small shop.

When at some of the accommodations there is a shared kitchen and dining area which will be used by the group and the guides during meal times. Most of the meals are prepared by the guides and it is good group etiquette to help with preparation and washing up on these days and this is usually done on rotation - it's all part of the adventure and when everyone puts in a little effort the trip runs smoothly.

We have 2 nights at a wild bush camp in Okavango. The tents are comfortable (2.2 x 2.2 x 1.8 meters) and are which are set up with camp beds and linen and en-suite chemical toilets. There is also a bucket shower tent with warm water from the fire. There are no lodges in this part of the Okavango Delta, and this is one of the best accommodations on offer which is in total submersion in the Delta wildlife and safari experience.

If you are travelling by yourself, you will be paired up with another single client of the same sex. A limited number of single rooms are available for a supplementary cost. If you are planning on extending your holiday additional nights at the group hotel are available on request.

All accommodation is subject to change without prior warning.

SAFARI TRUCKS
Years of safari experience into the design of the trucks. The trucks are built to comply with the latest South African transport and safety regulations. Your comfort is catered for with individual seats (with safety belts), ample legroom and large vertical sliding windows for unobstructed viewing and photography.

There are roof hatches for excellent "open" views and an integral cab and passenger compartment so contact with the driver is easy. Each truck also has large packing compartments, a built in kitchen, freezer, drinking water tank, interior lights and a gas stove (to minimise use of wood and destruction of forest areas). There is also a pullout set of steps into the passenger compartment, making access for clients easier. There is usually a bank of plug sockets in the vehicles. These plugs are the South African 3 round pin or 2 round pin with a hexagonal base. We also use minibuses for some small group safaris. All of our vehicles are bought new and serviced by Mercedes and Toyota agents, thus ensuring trouble free touring with backup support in practically every town in Southern Africa.

Where road conditions allow, such as South Africa, Namibia and parts of Botswana we may also use minibuses. On 5% of tours we may use minibuses with 12 seats and air conditioning (with trailer for equipment and baggage). The safaris often have several long days of travel providing for a beautiful journey on the way to exciting and varied destinations.

For the transfers into the Okavango Delta we use open 4WD vehicles with local guides.

Group leaders are the key to any successful safari. On this adventure safari, you will travel with two qualified and experienced, registered field guides (FGASA). Two guides as crew, not a guide and a driver, adds up to an informative and interesting small group holiday. Our guides have a passion for Africa, her people and wildlife, and they love nothing more than sharing their knowledge with you.

We estimate that a total of around £400-500 per person (or equivalent in euros/dollars) should be allowed for personal spending. This amount should be sufficient to cover non-included meals and miscellaneous expenses, including tips to local staff. If you are intending to buy expensive souvenirs, considerable quantities of soft drinks / beer or undertake additional activities or excursions, you should budget accordingly (credit cards can be useful in this respect). You can choose to take your money in pounds sterling, dollars or euros. There will be the opportunity to change money into local currency on arrival at the airport (which we advise you to do) and your local leader will advise further places to change money en-route and at borders. Additionally, you will be able to get currency from bank ATMs in many of the towns that we will visit.

Many small traders will accept US$, Euro or GBP. Your notes should be clean and undamaged. And please avoid USD$100 and old issue ‘small head’ US$ notes as they might not be accepted.

Your tour leader also works extremely hard to ensure that your holiday runs smoothly and that you are happy. We suggest that a tip of £2–5 per client per day for your tour leader is reasonable. When it comes to tipping the guides that we sometimes use for various activities (e.g. game walks, polers in the Okavango Delta etc) we suggest that a tip of £1-3 per client per ½ day activity, or the local currency equivalent, is acceptable. As in all cases with tipping, the final decision of the amount tipped is up to the individual. It is up to you to decide if you thought the service was poor, or exceptional, and the amount tipped should reflect that. The amounts quoted above are guidelines for you to get an idea of what to tip.

For this holiday you should take one piece of luggage and a daypack. Your baggage will travel in the gear compartment of the truck with the group, and there is a finite amount of space. Please keep the weight of your main luggage to 12kg. You should bring a soft bag as these are more suitable to pack in the vehicle. For the 2 nights wild camping in the Okavango Delta you will take only what you need for these 2 nights and your main bag with remain in Maun.

For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in ‘Dates and Prices’ table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status and so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements.

We sell this holiday in conjunction with our local operator in Southern Africa. This enables us to gather together sufficient numbers of like-minded adventurers to get the holiday up and running quickly. For this holiday the minimum age is 12 yrs, however it is unusual to have people under 16yrs.

As a member of the South African Tourism Service Association, our ground agent in South Africa may require you to complete an indemnity form at the start of your holiday, which you will need your insurance details for. As a client of KE Adventure Travel, your rights under the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangement Regulations (2018) are unaffected and KE Adventure Travel will remain liable for the actions of our suppliers.

The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required, and you should have at least 2 blank pages for each country that you visit.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Please ensure that you check for the latest advice before travel. For the most up to date information on entry requirements, please visit the UK Government website.

Visa Zambia

British passport holders do not need a visa in advance and can obtain a visa on arrival. The Government of Zambia recently announced the removal of all visa fees for British passport holders. However implementation of the policy has not yet been confirmed and British nationals may still be charged $25 on arrival.

Other nationals should check details online to see if they need an e-visa.

Important Note for Victoria Falls: Please check your itinerary and your arrival/departure flights. If your accommodation and flights are from a different side of the falls you may need both a Zambian and a Zimbabwe visa. The town of Victoria Falls is in Zimbabwe, and the town of Livingstone is in Zambia.

Additionally If you visit the falls (on the border) and wish to cross the bridge to the other side you will require a visa for both countries.

A KAZA UNIVISA for Zimbabwe and Zambia is cheaper than purchasing the two visas for Zambia and Zimbabwe separately. The visa is valid for 30 days as long as you remain within Zimbabwe and Zambia. It is also valid for day trips to Botswana crossing over the Kazangula borders. It will not be valid if you overnight in Botswana.

It’s available at the international airports in Lusaka and Livingstone and at the land borders at Livingstone (Zimbabwe border) and Kazungula (Botswana border). You can also apply online. It costs US$50 and it is valid for 30 days.

Please note: The Government of Zambia recently announced the removal of all visa fees for British passport holders. However implementation of the policy has not yet been confirmed and British nationals may still be charged $25 on arrival. This may affect your decision to purchase a Kaza Univisa.

UK nationals do not normally need a visa to enter Botswana for stays of up to 90 days.

Travelling with children under 18yrs - Botswana

Parents travelling with children under 18 years will be asked to show the child’s full unabridged birth certificate. We had such an amazing experience ★★★★★

We had such an amazing experience with our guides, Kalunga and Farai. What friendly, fun and enthusiastic people they were! They were also excellent cooks and I loved the tasty and varied meals they made for us. The itinerary is full, varied and interesting and I really enjoyed the game drives, the boat cruises, the walks in the sand dunes, quad biking and sandboarding in the dunes near Swakopmund, camping in the Ogavango Delta and the standard of the lodges were exceptional and varied. Most had pools but we didn't have time to go in them because some of the journeys are very long. One tip is to have a plan where you rotate seats as the back 4 seats aren't as comfortable as the others. Also when we did game drives it's not as good viewing in the back. Note: it says the bus has roof hatches for excellent open views but we weren't allowed to open these due to safari park restrictions. In Namibia you can't use US dollars. You have to change money into Namibian dollars. There are money changers but you get a better rate at an ATM. You can change Sterling at the moneychangers. We found changing one big amount rather than lots of small amounts worked out cheaper. Contactless payments are widely used and we used our credit/debit cards to pay for meals, supermarket purchases, trips, etc. On the optional game drive in Chobe, Botswana the Internet was poor so they only accepted US dollars. Also take small denominations - $100 notes were not welcome. The visa situation is very confusing. We bought a Kaza Univisa at Victoria Falls airport on arrival. It cost $50. This allowed us to go back and forth from Zimbabwe to Zambia to see both sides of the falls. However, once you come out of these 2 countries (ie go to Botswana and Namibia) it ceases to be valid. Upon our return into Zimbabwe we had to buy a single entry visa to get us back in. This cost $55. We got this because our flight was from Victoria Falls. We did consider getting a double entry visa for $70 but as we were making more than 2 entries into Zimbabwe I don't think it would suffice. This was what our guides thought too. Perhaps if you don't go from Zambia to Zimbabwe on the free day (to see both sides of the falls) it might suffice because one entry is into Zimbabwe when you land and you don't enter Zimbabwe again until you fly home?
Water to Go bottles were very useful. There are many supermarket stops where you can get snacks, etc. We bought beer and wine at these stops too and the prices were good. The wine in the restaurants was very reasonably priced and nice! I enjoyed the food that our guides prepared for us. It was very varied and healthy. The quality and great variety of the lodges were excellent. Each one was unique and special. A head torch is essential. In the Ogavango Delta we were allowed to take one of our holdalls between the two of us, the other stayed back in the bus. I can highly recommend this trip! It certainly lived up to our expectations and the quality of the lodges exceeded them.

Excellent wildlife and sightseeing African adventure ★★★★★

We went on the 21 days accommodated trip to Zambia, Namibia and Botswana in June/July 2019. It was an excellent trip and we would highly recommend it. The itinery was excellent and we covered a lot of things, travelling over 5,000 kms in total. This meant that there are some fairly long driving days - however the truck was comfortable and there were regular stops. The accommodation was great. We stayed in a variety of lodges, tented lodges, and small hotels/guesthouses. We were very impressed wi th the quality and this really added to the overall experience of the trip. We stayed on the banks of rivers - listening to the elephants and hippos in the night, in a beautiful farmhouse outside Etosha, in stunning lodges in the Namibian desert etc. We were comfortable and slept well! The 2 nights wild camping was one of the highlights of our trip. We loved the small but comfy 2 person tents with their added room with toilet! The camp beds were comfy and it was a great adventure. We travelled in a 12 person truck - this was between places as well as for the game drives in Etosha. We had a great group and this made the journey fun. The truck was comfortable and had a charger for electrical items if you had things to charge on the go. Fresh fruit was always available and there were a selection of books and maps about the countries and wildlife. Some driving days were long but we stopped regularly and often stopped at supermarkets to stock up with extra snacks and drinks. My only constructive criticism of the truck was it was a little too big for the game drives in Etosha, in my view. I would have preferred to split the group into 2 smaller vehicles-for maximum opportunities to view the wildlife. This, however, is only a minor issue. The guides were outstanding - Stephen and Maxwell. What incredible, knowledgeable, kind and funny men. They taught us a lot, were very patient, worked incredibly hard and were great company. They helped make the trip special. The food was great! It was amazing what they could cook up on a camp stove and we had a variety of different things every night! We sometimes ate in the lodges but mostly from the truck. Everyone helped, which makes things work better. We had good, fresh, plentiful healthy food-such as stews, pasta, fish, salads, barbeque etc. Lunches were fresh salads/sandwiches/wraps and occasionally hotdogs They cooked me a full English breakfast for my birthday-which was well received! The itinery was great. What a start at the magnificent Victoria falls! We went there day 1 with the group from the Zambian side and they were stunning. Day 2 is a free day with optional activities. You could return to the falls and cross the border to see them from the Zimbabwean side (75 % of the falls) but we decided not as the visa for UK citizens was $85. We enjoyed a game drive (where we saw white rhino) and the sunset boat trip with free bar (the less said about that the better!!) Etosha was experiencing a drought so there were not as many sightings-however it was beautiful and we saw herds of elephants, giraffes, 2 lions, black rhino, zebras etc. On the free day in Swakopmund I highly recommend the optional 2 hours ATV dune trip-it was a lot of fun and most of the group went. The dunes in Sossusvlei were breath-taking! We climbed dune 45 - again stick at it - it was worth it to get to the top and see the views. Another huge highlight was the 2 nights wild camping in Botswana-WOW! We travelled to the Okavango delta in Mokoros (small canoes) propelled by a poler. We had a brilliant 2 days doing bush walks and sitting around the camp fire with the incredible people who were looking after us. We saw hippos galore, giraffes, zebra, elephants, water buffalo etc whilst walking - it was so exciting! So many more beautiful things - too many to mention here! I did a lot of research before we booked and found that the price and itinery of this trip was the best, in my view and we are very happy that we did it. We would go again in a heartbeat. Thank you-what a wonderful 50th!

Great Landscapes and Superb Wildlife ★★★★

On this trip you certainly get to see a great deal in a relatively short space of time, but do be prepared for some long days inside a potentially hot and dusty vehicle over some very rough roads - and some very good roads. The highlights for me were the two nights wild camping in the Okavango Delta away from civilization and modern technology, and the stunning deserts of Namibia. I went in September/October, but I think that somewhat earlier in the year would have provided as many good wildlife opportunities with less heat. The accommodation is very impressive, with a variety of very good quality lodges and cabins and some very good glamping tents - all were very clean and comfortable. Most of the food was prepared by the guides with the assistance of willing volunteers from the group, which made the experience very sociable and a good way to get to know one another. A few meals were taken in restaurants, and gave the opportunity to try some unusual delicacies such as crocodile, kudu, eland and oryx. We managed to see most of the "big five" species (the five most dangerous to Man), especially in the Okavango and Chobe national parks, where there was all sorts of animal and bird life in abundance. It was an amazing experience to be sitting in one of the open-sided vehicles in the Chobe park with a herd of about 40 elephants including babies and juveniles ambling by within about 10 metres of us. The game drive was followed by an evening cruise on the river, which was really excellent and culminated in an awesome sunset. Tracking big game in the Okavango Delta was another truly memorable experience, the native guides giving so much valuable information on animal behaviour and identification by their droppings. By contrast, the deserts were stunning for their landscape qualities, but also produced an unexpected array of wildlife from lizards, snakes and birds to mammals. However, one of the most vivid memories I have taken away was not so much the classic dunes of the Kalahari but seeing the Milky Way again in all its glory - a rare sight in our polluted night skies. The two guides we had - Chris and Zandre - were very informative and worked hard behind the scenes to ensure that we were properly looked after and kept to the busy schedule. Zandre produced some very memorable meals from fresh ingredients, often using rudimentary bush cooking equipment. Aside from the landscape and wildlife interest, this trip provides a great deal of cultural and historic interest, including desert rock carvings and rock paintings, and the remains of a petrified forest. The holiday includes some walking, some of which is optional, but was necessary to see the carvings and paintings. The ascent of Dune 45 in the Kalahari is a "must-do" experience and not as bad as it looks if you take your time, for the rewards are spectacular. The desert landscapes provided a beautiful palette of colours from blacks to reds, browns and yellows, all set against deep blue skies. And, of course, you get to see some fabulous dusks and dawns during the trip, over mountains, plains and rivers. Cultural interest was provided through beautiful naive song and dance routines, the most memorable occasion being an impromptu mini concert in the Okavango Delta around the camp fire after the evening meal. Then there was a short walk with San Bushmen, who showed how it is in fact possible to create fire by rubbing two sticks together. Again, by way of contrast, the ex-colonial German settlements of Swakopmund and Windhoek have a special character to remind you of a bygone era, although hearing German being spoken by schoolchildren in the streets was quite bizarre. Along the way there are several opportunities for excursions including flights by microlight and plane (Victoria Falls) and helicopter or plane (Okavango), as well as several activities at Swakopmund such as dune buggies or a desert wildlife experience where we came across a sidewinder snake, desert jackal, colourful lizards and birds. At the Okavango I chose to take the light aircraft flight (pay by card or cash) but if you want to take photographs you need to take the somewhat pricier helicopter flight for uninterrupted views and a slower ground speed. I can't believe that we packed in so much in such a short space of time. Highly recommended, despite some uncomfortable days on the road, and a long flight from the UK.

It's not a holiday, it's an adventure!
★ ★ ★ ★ ★

5,600 kilometres in 20 days involved a lot of travelling but the Sunway overlander bus was very comfortable. The food from the mobile kitchen never disappointed. The lodges were all good, some exceptional (Tarentaal/ Desert Camp/ Nata). The guides worked their socks off and helped to make the holiday special. The wildlife sightings were exceptional - saw all Big 5 except Leopard and many more besides. Fantastic experience and have come back already planning next African Adventure.

Memories that will last a lifetime
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
, I wanted to thank you for the most incredible 3 weeks. My husband, son and I joined the tour which began in Livingstone on 30th July. I don’t know where to start ........ Our guides Phumi and Petros were outstanding in every way: their professionalism, high quality care, knowledge, organisation and enthusiasm were second to none, and I would be grateful if you could pass on our thanks and comments to them once again. The accommodation and the meals provided by the guides were superb. We part icularly enjoyed the tree house accommodation. We loved the opportunity to interact with the local people too. This was made possible especially during the two nights camping on the Okavango Delta and the walks with the San Bushmen. Other highlights included the safari drives, especially in Etosha, and the Chobe River Game Cruise and the sand dunes of Namibia. There was nothing we did not enjoy, and we would not hesitate to recommend your company to others or to use you again in the future.

A real taste of Africa
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
For anyone looking to visit Africa this is a wonderful and varied trip. The itinerary is extremely well planned and covers safaris in Etosha and Chobe. If you're lucky like us you'll spot the big five! Spotting a leopard up a tree in Etosha on our first day is something we'll never forget. You'll get to stay in wonderful lodges, cabins, tents etc and everyday is different to be shared with new friends on the tour. It's important to have a relaxed and flexible attitude as you'll be travelling in a mixed group spending many hours in the truck between destinations and one night you'll be wild camping and the other in a luxury lodge. Kalunga and Griffiths, our tour leaders, gave us a holiday of a lifetime. They worked tirelessly to provide us with great meals, safaris, local information etc and did their utmost to make the trip memorable. We only wish it didn't have to end so soon!
