Stunning Trek on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

Where do I start? The whole trip was incredible! From the initial contact with KE, booking the trip helpfully assisted by David and to completing the trek and being rewarded by the amazing sight that is Machu Picchu! This was the first time I had ever undertaken a trip like this. I was a little nervous but was soon overtaken by excitement. Before the trip I made sure I was physically fit and prepared as I could be. I definitely recommend ensuring you are physically fit as the trek should not be ... underestimated but is very doable especially with the expertise of our guide, Juan. I travelled with my best friend and there were 5 of us in total in the group. The ground support team were awesome. Juan and the porters looked after us amazingly well. The food prepared by the cook was delicious and of a high standard. We definitely didn’t go hungry! The camps were great, hygiene was very good and even the toilet tent had some great views of the mountains! Arriving through the Sun Gate to see Machu Picchu on Day 4 was incredible and emotional. Juan our guide had previously worked at Machu Picchu. His knowledge and enthusiasm was second to none. On arriving back in Cusco my friend and I had a couple of days down time. Cusco is beautiful and well worth exploring. We had extended our trip, which I recommend doing. We then took then Perurail Lake Titicaca train to Puno. A day of first class travel and dining through some amazing scenery and of course a delicious Pisco Sour cocktail. After a night in Puno we went on a boat trip on Lake Titicaca and visited one of the floating islands of Uros followed by a home stay on the island of Amantani where we stayed in the home of the lovely Sylvia and her family. The home had electricity, no flushing toilet and food was cooked over a fire. It was another great experience and Sylvia made us very welcome at her home with fabulous views over the lake. It was definitely a trip of extremes.
The organisation of the whole trip was amazing. Transfers to and from the airports, train stations, hotels, was all very efficient. All accommodation we stayed in was clean and comfortable. The staff were all very welcoming. I agree with a previous review about having a couple of days more in Cusco before the trek as we were very tired after the long flight but a minor detail. Thank you KE!

Outstanding family holiday

Highlights of Vietnam Explorer

An utterly brilliant, memorable trip for our family (two adults and two teenage boys). We were very impressed with KE and the local partner agency and how everything went exactly according to plan. From the chaotic bustle of the moped-filled streets to the jaw-dropping natural beauty of Ha Long Bay, it was a really special trip that packed in so many things.

Cruising and rowing through the dense coconut groves of the Mekong Delta on the first full day was something else and felt like being ... dropped into the film set of Apocalypse Now, deep in the jungle. Spectacular. A special lunch at a restaurant in this remote wilderness, with karaoke blaring from a nearby house – the locals go mad for karaoke! – was surreal in the very best way, and our guide was so interesting and knowledgeable about the history and culture of Vietnam and the local area.

Other highlights:
-Cycling along small rural paths through rice fields outside Hôi An, being led by the self-guided app’s navigation, which spoke instructions and displayed the map of our route. Brilliant.
-Stopping at a tiny cafe in the stunning vegetable village of Trà Quê outside Hôi An. Trà Quê is like some sort of idyll of how we should all be living in harmony with nature and each other.
-Two magical days and nights cruising around the utter natural majesty of Ha Long Bay. This has to be our top highlight, and included kayaking, swimming and karaoke. We feel genuinely privileged to have experienced Ha Long Bay. Humbling and memorable.
-Thousands of lanterns and boats floating down the Thu Bôn river for Hôi An’s full moon Lantern Festival. Mesmerising. The timing was pure luck – but Hôi An would be stunning at any time of year.
-Some beautiful meals.
-Wandering about at night in the warm air.
-Lovely hotels to relax in after a busy day.
-The obliging friendliness of people.

The whole itinerary was so well thought out. It’s a lot to cram in but there are also windows of opportunity to fill your time as you please. It was a real rural-urban agrarian-commercial-industrial communist-capitalist mix. The cities are v busy, and you don’t have to stray far from the main drag to find streets lined with rubbish and shanty towns. Roads were mayhem, with families of three and sometimes four crammed onto a moped, often without helmets, but there was something buzzing and energetic about it all. Our overall feeling was that there seemed to be less noticeable anger than in our own culture. Obviously, some of the history is truly horrific, but we felt it was important to know about it and respect this incredible, resilient, peaceful nation.

Thank you, KE, for a trip that will stay with us forever. And thank you, Vietnam.

Amazing Nepal

Annapurna and Bandipur Luxury Lodge Trek

Well it was an amazing experience!
We had a lovely time- there were only four of us on the trip but we got on really well and had a lot of laughs.
Our guide, Pasang, really made the holiday for us- he was brilliant. Professional, kind, helpful, informative,thoughtful and kind, he really was an excellent guide. Our porters MB and RB were brilliant too, nothing was too much trouble for them.
The walking was lovely - the days to Landruk and Ghandruk were quite challenging, and all the steps ... are really hard on the old knees!
The lodges were generally very good - we had plentiful food, and usually had warm water! The lodges supplied down jackets, hats and gloves, these were very useful on the cool mornings and evenings. I was surprised at how much European food we were given however- thankfully Pasang started arranging more dal bhats for us as the trip went on.
We did eat an awful lot- don't expect (or even hope) to lose weight on this trip!!!
We saw so much and there were so many highlights - the mountain views, the dal bhats, the lovely walks (even the leech bites didn't spoil out walks), learning about Nepal and Nepali culture. The people were so lovely and helpful and kind everywhere we went.
The trip from Bandipur to Kathmandu wasn't a highlight though- it was a seven hour journey on mostly unmade roads- I would certainly recommend taking some travel sickness medication for this long and uncomfortable journey.
Kathmandu is very polluted, if you have any respiratory problems I would definitely suggest you wear a mask when walking about. There is a brilliant massage service just outside the yak and yeti hotel, they do a great trekkers massage - I would highly recommend this to anyone.
Our flight was delayed by ten hours then cancelled (causing a 34.5 hour delay to the journey), but Pasang came and got us from the airport, and took us to his house for tea before returning us to the hotel. That was really enjoyable, and an interesting insight to his life. Thank you so much for this Pasang , it was much appreciated.
A fascinating trip to the foothills.

Superb Trip

Heritage Trails of Rajasthan

A fabulous tour made extra special by the care, attention and general fabulousness of the guide Ketan. We had so many laughs, so many impromptu moments- every day was extraordinary. The hotels were all very different, some better than others but all interesting. To be honest, for the price paid they were great. The walking isn’t grade 4, I’d say grade 2. It’s more a sightseeing holiday with walks than a walking holiday. Highly recommended.

Fantastic Trek - Varied & Stunning Scenery but Tougher Than Expected

Kangchenjunga Trek

The trek was absolutely fantastic. It more than met my expectations. If you are thinking about joining this trek, here are a few pointers
1. The scenery was very varied from jungle and terraced fields in the first week, to sub alpine forests and then to the high alpine passes. Getting to North Base Camp was a realy highlight and I felt very privileged to be in such a beautiful and remote place.
2. The guide Prem was fantastic. He knows the area really well and is incredibly helpful.
3. There ... were four Sherpa guides (including Prem) for our group of 10 so this meant that we could walk at our own pace and spend time looking at the amazing views without having to rush.
4. The food was great, particularly given the remote location and we ate really well. There were lots of carbs to keep us going (pasta, rice, potatoes) but also fresh vegetables, loads of soup and local food such as Tibetan bread. The hygiene standands set up by Prem and the team are incredibly high and none of us got sick.
5. The trek was tougher than we expected and you have to move up a level. We have done the Tour of Mont Blanc and hut to hut hiking carrying all our gear along the GR5 from Geneva to Nice but even this does not prepare you for the sheer scale of these mountains. The steepness of the Himalyas is unrelenting and it's pretty tough. Even the first week walking through famland and forest is just up, up, up and then down, down, down.
6. It was really remote and quiet which was fantastic. We only saw three other tourists the first week and then a few groups after Yampudin but we felt that we had the mountains to ourselves.
7. The down sleeping bags provided by KE were nice and warm and the foam mattresses were comfortable. It's a good idea to take a thermarest mattress as well for extra comfort. Also take YakTrak spikes / portable crampons. We had snow on the Migrin La pass and we would have struggled to get down without them

The holiday was a lot more than I was expecting, with birds, wildlife and culture. Our guide Walter was absolutely brilliant, extremely knowledgeable, excellent English, very patient with the questions asked, and looked after us so well. His knowledge of birds and animals was exemplary and not just Costa Rica. Accommodation was excellent and diverse. The local guides were also very good and patient with the party taking photos. Our driver Carlos was very careful, happy, and tried to teach us a ... little Spanish. I cannot find anything wrong with this holiday. It is the 3rd holiday with KE and I hope to do another.

Walter could not have been better. His knowledge of everything, birds, animals, flora and fauna and culture, and history was amazing. He was patient, amusing and extremely helpful to everyone. Walter is the perfect guide and host for the paradise that Cost Rica is. Walter certainly made this holiday extra special. This holiday is one that will be remembered with wonderful memories and fun.

Spires and Ice - Trekking Patagonia

I found the whole trip exceedingly well organised both at the administrative end in Keswick where all questions were treated with respect and courtesy and at the Patagonia end where the whole trip moved without any hiccups or challenges due without a doubt to the brilliant Nati Grande our guide and Eric the Chilean guide both of whom were very switched on and exceedingly knowledgeable throughout the whole trip about our surroundings, I learnt such a lot about the countries we visited.

Unspoilt trekking in the Ganesh Himal

It was lovely to be back in Nepal after a break of six years and an unexpected pleasure to meet up again with trip leader Bhim Tamang. One has to marvel at the logistics that go into a camping trek (the sort we much prefer) and it is a huge credit to all involved, the attentive guides, the fabulous cook crew, the hard-working porters, that everything works so seamlessly.
The Ganesh Himal still feels largely unspoilt and we saw no more than half a dozen other trekkers throughout the whole trip. ... Some of the route inevitably involves walking on the traffic-free dirt roads that are pushing into the region, but much of it is on quiet little-used trails that cross from one valley to another via high summer pastures. As others have noted, it is not a trek which gets up close and personal to big peaks, although you do get some great views along the way. On the other hand you do get to stay in some delightful villages where, at this time of year, the traditional harvesting is in full swing.
We had excellent weather conditions, no rain at all, warm and sunny at lower elevations, tending to late afternoon mist and then clear frosty nights higher up. Unfortunately early morning mist obscured any views from the Sing La, but those from the camp at Pansang La were superb.
All in all, a very enjoyable trip and a great group of fellow trekkers.

I was somewhat out of my comfort zone on some of the mountain ascents, largely due to the lack of snow but I had complete confidence in the guides. Ram was with us all the way and looked after the group, calmly and efficiently.

Another Himalayan Gem

Rolwaling Valley Trek and Climb - Yalung Ri

It's amazing what can be done in just two weeks: Kathmandu - ascent of a Himalayan peak - back to Kathmandu. Our 100% success entirely thanks to the leadership of Pasang Kaji "PK" Sherpa and the efforts of his team. It's a great trek beside the Rolwaling Chhu, with views of Alpamayo look-alike Chekigo (6257 m)...PK's idea of a "rest" day (Beding) was to hike the first two hours of the route to its base camp. Excellent acclimatisation. And excellent tea house accommodation, and food. Cook Dhan ... Raj Tamang (the world's best chicken biryani) even brought along a (large) stove top espresso maker! Base camp (5012 m) was on snow, minus 11°C at night. Our ascent of Yalung Ri began with a relaxed and distinctly non-Alpine 7am start...and all summited by 12 noon. Made possible by the previous evening's Herculean efforts of PK et al fixing some 600 m of rope. This protected the final 220 m of climbing (20° snow slope - although seemed steeper!). It's a great climb, and rewarded with some fine views, including a distant Shishapangma, Gaurisankar and Cho Oyu. Top tip: Khukri Nepalese rum can be bought in tea houses en route...it's rather excellent in hot chocolate or espresso :)

Too many people on the tour

Cycle Madagascar - Highlands to the Coast

On the tour information it said that the maximum number of people on the tour would be 16. There were 17 on the tour including a large number of singles.
This caused numerous problems from the bus being cramped to the guides not being able to look after everyone efficiently. Also hotels were changed to less quality ones as the original ones could not accommodate such a large number. This also meant that when people crashed which was inevitable on the off road sections the guides were unable to ... reach the injured quickly a S they were stretched too thin. This was also exacerbated by the fact that the tour was designated a 5. I chose this tour as I had ridden a 7 in the drackensburg mountains and wanted something easier. This tour was harder than the ddrackensburg which meant that with a number of faster and a number of much slower riders again the guides were stretched. I am happy to discuss this further should you wish .

Couldn't even see the beaten track from here!

Lamjung Himal Trek

This trip was fantastic for taking us away from the roads more travelled. We didn't see any other people for 5 days!
The camping/trekking is hard work because of the altitude and cold (I was there in Nov), but totally worth it to stand on the ridges and look down at a see of clouds as the moon rises and the sun sets on either side of you.
