Overview

North of Pokhara, one of the finest of Himalayan journeys is the classic trek into the inner sanctum of the  Annapurnas. Here, giant peaks such as the 8000 metre Annapurna 1, as well as Annapurna South,  Gangapurna and Machhapuchhre, encircle the natural amphitheatre known as the Annapurna Sanctuary. Combining the trek into the Sanctuary with a visit to Ghorepani and the classic Himalayan viewpoint of Poon Hill, this trek manages to cram the full range of Nepalese trekking experiences into 10 varied days of walking.

We encounter sub-tropical forest teeming with wildlife, pretty villages with their neatly terraced rice fields, as well as pleasant ridge walking and spectacular Himalayan panoramas. Passing through the 'gates' of the Sanctuary, we ascend briefly above 4000 metres into a world of ice and snow where we are surrounded by giant Himalayan summits. We then return to civilisation, heading south and following the tumbling Modi Khola (river), whilst passing through a picture-perfect landscape of folded hills and more scattered villages, which are home to people of the Gurung and Magar ethnic groups. With 2 nights in Kathmandu and 2 in Pokhara, we will also be able to enjoy some free time in each of Nepal's main (and very contrasting) cities. In common with all of our lodge treks, this holiday provides a great opportunity to meet and share experiences with like-minded travellers from around the world.

This short and relatively straightforward trekking holiday in Nepal follows a very popular trekking route and the paths are mostly well-maintained and in good condition. However, the trails are often either steeply up or down and you can expect to encounter lots of long sections of stone steps. Additionally, and especially in the lush sub-tropical forest of the lower parts of the trek, underfoot conditions can be slippery. It should be noted that trekking at altitudes above 3000 metres makes greater demands on the body than walking at lower elevations and can be challenging even for fit hikers. We allow a week (7 days) for the trek to Annapurna South Basecamp, including the hike to the viewpoint of Poon Hill, and this works really well in terms of acclimatisation. You will need to ensure you are physically prepared for the trek and you should be comfortable with walking for 5 to 7 hours each day and for several days continuously.

Why KE?

We've been trekking in Nepal for over 30 years, which means we really know the best way to experience this magical country. We include all meals, because the last thing you want to be worrying about on trek is sorting your sustenance; our itinerary is crafted to ensure excellent acclimatisation, and our expert local guides are the best in the business.

After breakfast in the hotel we take a bus to the domestic terminal of Kathmandu Airport for the 30 minute flight to Pokhara. It is a most interesting flight, with the peaks of the Greater Himalaya clearly visible through the right-hand window as we travel westwards. Particularly prominent are Manaslu and the Annapurna group as we approach the airport at Pokhara. Getting off the plane into the heat of Pokhara is impressive, as is the sight of the snow peaks of the Annapurna Himal which form the skyline to the north. After lunch the afternoon is free to explore this laid-back lakeside town. You can go shopping, take a rowing boat out on to the lake of Phewa Tal or hike up to the Peace Pagoda which sits on a ridge overlooking the town. Dinner will be taken in a local restaurant.

The drive to the start point of our trek at Nayapul (1060m) will take 1 to 2 hours. Here, we set off on our trek, following the Mhodi Khola River for about 20 minutes to the little town of Birethanti with views of the Fish Tail peak (Machhapuchhre) ahead of us. At Birethanti we turn off towards the north-west to ascend the valley of the Burungdi Khola. We will encounter some of the famous Annapurna area steps today and pass through a couple of small settlements including Hille (1500m). The last 3 kilometres are a little steeper as we make the pull up to our lodge in the settlement of Ulleri (2050m). Ulleri is a large Magar village and a place from which many Gurkha soldiers have been recruited over the years.

Trekking as far as Ulleri onthe first day means we have less to do today as we make our way up to Ghorepani (a name which means 'horse-watering place'). The well-used trail continues relatively steeply with lots of steps as we ascend to Banthanti, before passing through a forest of rhododendron, magnolia and oak to reach the colourful collection of lodges at Ghorepani (2860m) which occupies a notch in a ridge overlooking the Kali Gandaki Valley.

It is a must for those who stay at Ghorepani to make the walk up to the celebrated viewpoint of Poon Hill (3195m) which is a continuation of the ridge to the west of the village. Dawn is the best time to go - sunrise on the Annapurnas is an unforgettable experience. Those who wish to go will need to get up early! Before the first light of dawn hits the mountains, we will trek up the well-marked path by the light of our head torches, reaching the summit as the first rays of the sun illuminate Dhaulagiri and Tukuche Peak with a beautiful pink glow. The walk will take around 45 minutes to 1 hour. After enjoying the view, we'll retrace our steps to Ghorepani where we'll have a hearty breakfast, before setting off on our trek to Chuile on the south side of the Annapurna Sanctuary. The trail, now heading towards the east, undulates gently through the forest and we should look out for the langur monkeys which live here. During today's walk, we may also get glimpses of sacred Machhapuchhre, the Fishtail Peak, through the trees. The altitude at Chuile is 2309 metres.

After breakfast we head steeply down to the river, crossing via another suspension bridge. The next couple of hours see us contour and undulate though the landscape before reaching the steep section of steps that take us up to Chhomrong (2170m) where we take lunch. From here, the true grandeur of the mountains can be seen, with unimpeded views of Machhapuchhre, Hiunchuli and Annapurna South. From Chhomrong it is a steep descent, largely on steps, to the valley bottom and then back up again to our overnight stop at Bhanuwa (2110m).

From Bhanuwa the trail climbs through terraced fields and then through forest of bamboo and rhododendron to the ridge crest at Sinuwa Hill Top. From Bamboo we climb again for a further two and a half hours, passing through Dobhan to reach our overnight lodging at the place known as Himalaya (2920m).

The next part of the trail is subject to avalanche during the winter and often has to be rebuilt at the start of the spring season, a factor which can change the route description from year to year. Mostly the trail-makers do a good job of finding a route through this section, including the construction of some ingenious bridges, and this allows us to make a steady ascent. Along the way we pass the fire-blackened overhang of Hinko Cave, traditionally used as a shelter by porters, and we should reach the lodges at Deorali (3170m) after around 2 hours. Beyond Deorali the valley narrows to a steep sided gorge as we head towards the 'gateway' to the Annapurna Sanctuary. Depending on the trail conditions, we may opt to cross the Modi Khola (at this point little more than a stream) to its east side for a while, before returning to the west bank to climb up to the area known as Machhapuchhre Basecamp (3700m) a level and grassy moraine platform with several lodges. At this point we have passed through the narrow entrance to the Sanctuary and find ourselves in more open country which is dominated by giant snow covered peaks.

A short but spectacular day of trekking today. It is a relatively gentle walk from our lodge to Annapurna South Basecamp (4130m) and a distance of only about 4 kilometres. Increasingly impressive views and jaw-dropping mountain moments reward us for our efforts, as we climb the last steep section before reaching the basecamp area, where the entire south face of Annapurna is revealed. A cirque of stupendous peaks surrounds us and the feeling of being inside a hidden valley - a sanctuary in fact - is overwhelming. After we check in at our lodge, the afternoon is free to relax and admire one of the most stunning mountain amphitheatres in the Himalaya.

For those who want to experience the very special dawn views, a pre-dawn wake-up is highly recommended. It's worth any discomfort to catch the sunrise on this unique mountain scene. Then, after breakfast at the lodge, we leave all this behind and retrace our steps first to Machhapuchhre Basecamp and then on to Deorali where we take lunch after around 3 hours of trekking. After lunch, we continue our descent of the Modi Khola and reach the relative warmth of Dobhan (2540m) by mid afternoon.

We are back into the forests again today at times, as we pass through Bamboo and the ridge top settlement of Sinuwa where we stop at a lodge and take lunch. After a short climb up and out of Chhomrong we drop steeply down to Jhinu where there are some hot springs. We then cross the Kimrong Khola on a sturdy bridge and follow this tributary river down to a confluence with the Modi Khola. There is very little climbing to do as we navigate the folds of this big river valley and our trend today is mostly downhill. We pass through terracing and small villages which indicate our return to civilisation from the high mountains and finally reach the jeep road at Syauli Bhatti, we say goodbye to our trek crew. Here, we board our waiting vehicles for the relatively short ride to Pokhara, where we check in to our comfortable hotel close to Phewa Tal. After a shower and clean-up, we will have some free time to wander by the lake or to sit in the garden of one of the excellent lakeside restaurants and admire the view of the Annapurnas. Compared to Kathmandu, Pokhara is a very laid-back town and is the perfect place to relax at the end of our trek. Pokhara also has a deserved reputation for great restaurants and this evening we will go out for a celebratory meal.

We take the morning flight to Kathmandu. Take it easy by the hotel pool in the afternoon or do some independent sightseeing. One of the attractions of any visit to Nepal is the chance to walk the streets of Kathmandu, which presents a fascinating mosaic of shops, cafes and restaurants, food markets and street vendors, as well as a bewildering array of colourful temples and shrines. This evening we will have a dinner in one of Kathmandu's excellent restaurants.

The group will meet at the hotel in Kathmandu.

Transfers are provided from/to Kathmandu Airport for all clients arriving on Day 1 of the Land Only itinerary and departing on the last day of the Land Only itinerary.

Hotel contact details and an emergency number will be provided with your booking confirmation.

All meals are included from dinner on Day 1 to breakfast on Day 14. While staying in Kathmandu and in Pokhara meals will be taken in the hotel or at a local restaurant. On trek the group will take their meals at lodges. Normally this will be a set meal for the whole group. Boiled or purified water is available at all the lodges we stay at. Bottled water is also available to purchase (at additional cost) but we do not recommend this on grounds of environmental care.

It is not recommended to drink untreated water from the taps. If you are on a trekking or cycling holiday, water is supplied to fill up your individual bottles. This will be boiled, filtered or provided in large jerry cans or 5 litre bottles. Additionally you should take purification tablets or a filter bottle (such as a Water-To-Go bottle) to treat your water when in towns or where water is not supplied. We do not encourage the purchasing of single use plastic bottles.

Typical meals provided in the lodges will include some Nepali dishes but also international cuisine from pizza and chips to apple pie. To ensure that the group can eat together, we order meals in advance and your trip leader will arrange a set menu for the group, which will alternate daily between local and international dishes. Breakfast will usually be porridge, eggs, bread and a hot drink, lunch will be a simple meal with a hot drink, and dinner will be 3 courses consisting of soup, main meal and a simple pudding. Boiled drinking water will be provided at breakfast, lunch and dinner. In Kathmandu and in Pokhara we take our meals in the hotel and also in the excellent local restaurants which offer dishes from all around the world.

In Kathmandu we use comfortable 4 and 5 star accommodation including the Malla Hotel. Located in the heart of the city, this hotel offers a range of first-class facilities including pleasant tree-shaded garden areas complete with swimming pool. The group will also spend 2 nights in Pokhara at a centrally-located tourist-class hotel. Whilst on trek there are 9 nights in lodges. Accommodation is generally arranged on a twin sharing basis and if you are travelling by yourself you will usually be paired up with someone of the same sex. Please note that at several of the higher lodges we may be forced to use multi-bedded rooms. Nepalese trekking lodges are simple, friendly and atmospheric. They generally have heated dining areas which are often attractively decorated. Bedrooms are, however, basic and unheated with wooden beds and foam mattress. You will need a sleeping bag. The lodges have shared washing and toilet facilities. Some lodges have solar powered showers (charged at $4 - $5 per shower) and battery charging facilities (also charged at a rate per hour). Staying at the lodges is a great way to meet fellow hikers and the locals. For the 4 hotel nights single rooms are available for a supplementary cost. It is not possible to arrange single accommodation in lodges. Additional hotel nights in Kathmandu can also be pre-booked.

Access to the high and remote areas of the Himalaya where our treks start is often only possible using internal flights. The changeable nature of mountain weather makes flying conditions complex. In addition, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal does not operate to the same standards as those of western nations and all airlines in Nepal appear on the UK Air Safety List (ASL), and are banned from operating commercial air services to, from, and within the United Kingdom. Flying in Nepal is an acknowledged risk, and the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office travel advice provides further details which you can read on their website. KE is mindful of its duty of care to clients travelling with us in Nepal and we are stakeholders in an annual independent air audit of Nepal airlines undertaken by UK tour operators, most recently undertaken in February 2024. KE uses 5 airlines in Nepal which have been approved by this audit. These airlines are: Buddha Air, Summit Airlines, Shree, Tara and Yeti. We continue to cooperate with other tour operators to monitor aviation safety in Nepal and will ensure we remain a stakeholder in any further air safety audits. While we have taken appropriate action to try to minimise the risks of flying in Nepal, you should be aware that flying in mountainous terrain is not without any risk.

Please note that poor weather can cause delays on internal flights. If at the start of your holiday internal flights are cancelled for the day, you will spend an extra night near the airport (this may be at a hotel other than the group hotel). On the majority of trips there is enough flexibility in the trekking itinerary to make up 1 or possibly 2 lost days, but an alternative trek will be provided if delays to internal flights mean the original itinerary (or a shortened version of it) is no longer feasible.

For trips that end with an internal flight out of the mountains with no alternative road access, we have included 2 nights in Kathmandu as a contingency against delay. In the extremely unlikely event that a delay to your internal flight causes you to miss your homeward international flight, KE will re-book international flights for Flight Inclusive clients, but please be aware that clients booking on a Land Only basis will be responsible for re-booking their onward travel and for any associated costs. We advise you to take out suitable travel insurance and to keep your receipts, as you may subsequently be able to make a claim.

The group will be led by a professional and qualified Nepalese tour leader, assisted by an experienced team including Sherpa guides and porters.

This holiday involves going to high altitude. During the course of your trip you will reach altitudes in excess of 3500 metres. This is not something that you should worry about; the human body is quite capable of adapting to a very wide range of altitudes, but it is important that we follow some simple rules in order to acclimatise successfully. Before coming on this holiday you should read the advice on trekking at high altitude. You can also talk to one of our trekking experts if you have any concerns about altitude. On this trip we carry a portable altitude chamber (PAC-bag) and/or bottled oxygen for use in emergencies.

Approximately £200 (or equivalent in US dollars, Euros etc.) should be allowed for miscellaneous expenses including porter and trek crew tips, beer, soft drinks etc. It is not necessary to obtain local currency prior to departure. Sterling, US Dollars and Euros are equally acceptable for exchange in Nepal. Please note: Scottish and Northern Ireland bank notes are not accepted in Nepal. We recommend that you carry your travel money in the form of cash, since you will exchange the majority of this on the day of your arrival in Kathmandu. If you prefer not to carry all of your spending money in cash, it is possible to withdraw money from ATMs in Kathmandu and Pokhara using your debit or credit card. During the trek it is possible to buy snacks, chocolate, soft drinks and beer on most days. Please be aware that since everything has to be carried up, these items become more expensive as you gain altitude.

Tipping is the accepted way of saying thank you for good service. Normally the porters and any other trek staff are given their tips at the end of the trek and this is best done as a group. Your Nepali tour leader will advise the group on an appropriate level of tipping. Most groups will hand out the tips with a bit of ceremony (or sometimes a party) on the last evening, to mark the end of the holiday. As a guide, we recommend that each group member contributes around £60 (in rupees) to these tips. At the end of their trek many people also like to donate various items of equipment to the porters and trek staff who work so hard to make the trip a success. Boots, gloves, hats, scarves and even socks are always warmly received by the porters. Your tour leader will make arrangements for a fair distribution (possibly by raffle) amongst the trek crew. Please note that you will have the opportunity to tip your tour leader separately (and additionally) during dinner on the final evening of the holiday.

Our holidays are normally designed with minimal 'down time' at the start of the trip, but having a day or two at the beginning will have the additional benefit of allowing you time to get over the stress of a long journey or travelling across time zones, leaving you refreshed and ready for your holiday. We can easily arrange for you to have additional nights and airport transfers.

Your main item of luggage should be a sturdy kit bag, duffle bag or similar. This will be carried during the trek by porters or pack animals and must weigh no more than 15kg. If you are picking up a sleeping bag and down jacket from KE in Kathmandu, you need to factor in the weight of these items (around 3kg) and allow space in your bag for them. You should also take on your holiday a daypack of approximately 30 litres capacity. It is possible to leave items not required on trek at the hotel in Kathmandu. For your international flights, please check the baggage allowance with your airline.

For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in ‘Dates and Prices’ table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status and so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements.

The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required, and you should have at least 2 blank pages for each country that you visit.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Please ensure that you check for the latest advice before travel. For the most up to date information on entry requirements, please visit the UK Government website.

Visa Nepal

All nationalities require a visa. The visa process is partly automated and the fee is $30 for 15 days, $50 for 30 days, $125 for 90 days. The visa is FREE for children under 10 years. The visa allows multiple re-entry. Payment must be made in cash and USD, GBP or Euros are accepted.

Part of this on-arrival visa process involves filling in a ‘Tourist Visa Application Form’ and you can simplify the procedure at Kathmandu Airport by filling this form in online (within 15 days of travelling) at this link. This generates a receipt which you present (hard copy or saved on your phone) on arrival. This should allow you to go straight to the cashier to pay for your visa and has the potential to save you time in the visa queue.

Whilst these are not now needed for the visa process, we recommend that you travel with at least 2 spare passport photographs.

If you are travelling via India (Delhi or Calcutta) to your destination you may also require a visa for India. This may apply even if you are not leaving the airport unless your baggage has been checked all the way through to your destination. Generally, if you use the same carrier for both legs of your journey, you will not need an India Visa. Please download the detailed information document: Visa PDF India.

TREKKING PERMITS – WHAT DO WE NEED FROM YOU ?

For treks in the Everest region – EBL, EVL, EHW, ELL - we need your passport details and we need you to take with you to Nepal 2 passport photographs. You will hand these over to your local leader on Day 1.

For treks in the Annapurna region – ASL, ACL, UAT, ANL and for the Gosainkund and Langtang Trek - GLT – we need your passport details and we need to send through to Nepal ahead of your departure a scan of a passport-style photograph of yourself. Please send this to us once your holiday is guaranteed.

For these Conservation Area treks and other treks requiring Special Permits – KAN, DLG, NAP – we need to send through to Nepal ahead of your departure a scan of a passport-style photograph of yourself and a scan of the information pages of your passport. Please send these to us once your holiday is guaranteed. On arrival in Kathmandu you will still be required to provide your passport (with your visa) for presentation at the Nepal Tourism Board. Your passport will be returned to you by your tour leader at dinner.

For those trips requiring Climbing Permits – MER, IPC, CTL, YAR - we need to send to Nepal ahead of your departure, a scan of a passport-style photograph of yourself and a scan of the information pages of your passport. Please send these to us once your holiday is guaranteed. On arrival in Kathmandu, for YAR and for CTL, you will still be required to provide your passport (with your visa) for presentation at the Nepal Tourism Board. Your passport will be returned to you by your tour leader at dinner.

If you have a severe allergy please inform the KE office before you travel. We will do all we can to help, but we cannot guarantee an allergy free environment on KE trips. You will need to carry your own treatment for the allergy with you, as 'adrenaline auto-injectors' are not carried as standard by KE leaders and staff. You should inform your leader on arrival of your allergy, and let them know where you keep your adrenaline pen.

Dengue fever is a known risk in places visited. It is a tropical viral disease spread by daytime biting mosquitoes. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available and therefore the best form of prevention is to avoid being bitten. We recommend you take precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

Vaccinations

You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you require any specific vaccinations or other preventive measures. You should be up to date with routine courses and boosters as recommended in the UK e.g. diphtheria-tetanus-polio and measles-mumps-rubella, along with hepatitis A and typhoid.

Malarial prophylaxis is not usually required for trips in the mountains, however if you are visiting rural and remote low lying areas then they might be necessary.

On holidays to more remote areas you should also have a dentist check up. A good online resource is Travel Health Pro.

The unit of currency in Nepal is the Nepalese Rupee.

It makes a lot of sense to spend some time before coming on a trekking holiday getting some additional exercise. The fitter you are, after all, the more enjoyable you will find the experience. We suggest that you adopt a weekly exercise regime leading up to your trip. Regular hiking in hill country is the best training but jogging, squash and swimming are also good for developing cardio vascular fitness and stamina. Note that you will encounter a lot of steps on the trail while ascending the Modi Khola valley and you might wish to tailor your exercise to take this into account. Whatever your preparation you should make time to spend at least a few days prior to your trip making long walks in hilly country. It is also a good idea to do some reading about the country and the culture of the local people before you embark on an adventure holiday.

October to November and March to May are the best times for trekking in Nepal. These months either side of the summer monsoon season are neither too hot in the foothills nor too cold in the higher elevations and they offer the best conditions for trekking. Pre-monsoon is the best time to see the colourful blooms of the rhododendron at lower elevations. The post-monsoon months usually offer the clearest skies and the most settled weather. At either of these periods you will encounter a wide range of daytime temperatures during your trip from approximately 25ºC in Kathmandu and a little higher in Pokhara to approximately 14ºC at 3000 metres, and approximately 7ºC at Annapurna Base Camp. The ‘real feel’ temperature in the middle of the day will be much warmer than this but at night in the rarefied air the temperatures plummet and you can expect to experience overnight temperatures below freezing anywhere above 3000 metres. In the Annapurna Base Camp, the night time temperatures may reach –10ºC or exceptionally, below this. Extended periods of rain or snow are very unlikely outside of the monsoon period but short lived storms can and do occur.

As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's ‘Travel Aware campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that prior to travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCDO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: www.travel.state.gov for essential travel advice and tips.

KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe.  Should the FCDO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation.  We receive regular updates direct from the FCDO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground.  If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office.

KE do not encourage the use of single use plastic items. We are ensuring that our agents all over the world are working together to reduce the problem and educate those around them. We are leading by example in our KE office by reducing our plastic use.

The Nepalese are still traditional and conservative in the way they dress. Therefore to avoid embarrassment on both sides we recommend that you respect this and do not wear revealing clothing or sleeveless tops while visiting Nepal. Shorts are acceptable, but they should reach to just above the knee and be modest and for women it is preferable to wear trousers or a long skirt.

Kahtoola Microspikes (or similar) footwear traction can help when trails are icy.

Great Experience ★★★★★

You are warned, and it's true. there are lots of steps - so get practicing on those stairs at home :-) The trekking was great and the scenery is out of this world. Amazing to see these majestic mountains rising up into the sky even when you are already standing at 4,000m. We had a super guide in Sujan, always with a smile and very proud and knowledgeable about his home country of Nepal. Our Lodges were basic (as you would expect) but the food was always good and if you peek into their kitch ens - they are immaculate. If you get the chance to have a cappuccino at Himalaya - go for it - it is amazing. Our flight back to Kathmandu was cancelled due to poor visibility and we had a most 'entertaining' 10hr trip by road - taken with the right attitude - it's an experience for all your senses!

Annapurna Sanctuary and Poon Hill Trek ★★★★★

Annapurna Sanctuary was a beautifully organized trip, all parts working. Great communication, great staff throughout. Jangbu Sherpa was beyond outstanding in every way. He knows exactly what he is doing, maintains a beautiful self-effacing sense of humor and quiet confidence even as it soon becomes obvious that he sees everything and knows how to help along the way in a graceful way that responds immediately to both group and individual needs. A very impressive and friendly man; I would trust hi m to take me anywhere.

Amazing varied trekking holiday ★★★★★

A great experience exploring a very varied part of Nepal. The local team of porters and guides were amazing, and the scenery was the best we have seen anywhere - especially our days in the snow at Annapurna base camp.

We had a brilliant time trekking to Annapurna base camp in October 2023. 10 days of beautiful scenery and lots of walking (tough at times - my poles were essential!). Great support from our brilliant leader & team and our fantastic porters. A holiday of a lifetime!

Beautiful but What I wish I knew
★ ★ ★ ★
It's a beautiful, remote area. My expectations were off and it would have been better if I understood these facts. 1) flights can be booted & are unpredictable. I wanted to spend the first 1/2 day in Pokhara but didn't arrive til dark. 2) The first morning and the last 4 hours of the trek are hiking on a dusty road with car/bus traffic. Kudos to KE for arranging a way for us to jeep instead of walk the last day, so we could see Pokhara! 3) This trek is thousands of stone steps, maybe 80%. I should have researched. 4) Super common to get a cough/respiratory issues trekking. You share a room with 1-4 others. So chances are, someone will be coughing in the night. Another woman and I were coughing most nights and had poor sleep. 5) The sanctuary has no animals, and thus is mostly vegetarian. If you're looking for a Nepal trek with only a few nights at elevation, this is very pretty and not too strenuous. I preferred other treks (Kili & Patagonia) to this in terms of beauty. But Nepalese are warm and the Himalayas are the biggest.

Excellent Trek
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Completed this Trek on 25.11.23 and as usual with KE, Logistics, Guides etc were excelent. Everything worked well and was as described in the trip notes. A few points I would offer to others, when trying to make comparisons between treks.
- Scenery on the ABC/ Poon Hill Trek is hugely varied and has numerous highlights, Unlike some other Nepal treks I have undertaken, there were no days of hard slog through dense jungle or similar, in order to get to the more dramatic locations. Even the
last day ( which involved some road walking ) was hugely enjoyable.
- The walking is challenging but never overly demanding. Yes, there are a lot of steps ( this is an Annapurna Trek ) and they need to be properly prepared for. The relatively low max altitude ( c 4100 ) means there is less stress around altitude factors and side effects, and that makes for a more relaxed trek.
- The trail is busy. There are a lot of co trekkers and that in turn has advantages and disadvantages. On the upside, there are plenty of lodges for Tea / Coffee stops and the lodges themselves have, in the main, very good facilities. On the downside, there are accommodation pinchpoints, particularly at Himalaya and ABC. On our trek ( Nov, so peak time ) that meant five men sharing a room on two nights, and three of us sharing on two other nights. KE warn of this and its all doable, but its cramped and there are obvious privacy issues. ( The same occurred for women in our group )
- Tied in with the above, I saw far less wildlife on this trek than others I have been on. Time of year is a factor ( especially for birds ) but number of trekkers is an obvious factor.
- Trek has the huge advantage of flying in and out of Pokhara ( which is still a lovely location ) so no long, tortuous jeep / bus rides. Again KE warn of amendments to flight times in and out of Pokhara ( and our flight in was changed significantly )
- Trail itself is very well maintained and safe, and we came across none of the areas of landslide which sometimes pop up and create concern for those of us with balance issues.
Above are a few subjective reflections. I would recomment the trek, for the consistent variety, quality of scenery and drama of the Annapurna Sanctuary area.

Annapurna Sanctuary and Poon Hill Trek
★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Everything was very well organised, and the while trip ran smoothly. Also very good value for money. Sundar was always cheerful and positive throughout the trip. He had everything well controlled and organised. He was instrumental in keeping things running smoothly, and also made things interesting with his local knowledge. Under Sundar's guidance, our group was sensitive to the social, economic and environmental impact of our presence in Nepal and the high Himalayas.

A Great All Round Trekking Experience
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
We considered undertaking this trek independently, however, decided to use KE (who one of our party had used before). The experience was extremely positive from the booking stage through to our two weeks in Nepal. The team leader assigned to our group was excellent and looked after us from our arrival at the airport through the trek itself and through to our departure. The food was good, the team supporting us was good, we were fortunate to have good weather and the accommodation was basic but w as what you would expect as part of a trek. The Himalayas did not disappoint, it was a fantastic experience.

Magnificent
★ ★ ★ ★ ★

A superb trek though lush green valleys up to the mountain and scrub area of the Annapurna Sanctuary. It's not easy, with countless steps to climb and descend on most of the days. However, the scenery and sense of achievement is like nothing I've ever seen or done. Our guide and his team were first class, they went out of their way to make sure we were safe and happy during the holiday. I can definitely recommend this trek.

Unforgettable adventure
★ ★ ★ ★ ★

This was an incredible trip. The best part about it was the variety of the trek - we went from terraced fields, to dense jungle, to snow-covered mountain terrain. And the wildlife, views, accommodation, expert guides and local people all make this trip an absolutely unforgettable experience. We couldn’t be happier with how it went.

MEMORABLE ADVENTURE
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
This was a wonderful experience, especially as it was my first trip beyond the borders of Europe. Whilst ABC was the goal and the climax of the trek there was much of interest on the way - the forest varying with altitude and aspect finally giving way to scrub and grassland, the terraced farmland, the changing view of the snow-capped peaks ahead drawing us on. I would fully endorse KE's choice of an itinerary that includes Poon Hill (good acclimatisation and a spectacular sunrise) and also one that includes staying a night at ABC. It was numbingly cold but seeing the dawn break encircled by the majestic peaks was awesome (and I'm old enough not to use the word lightly!). Pasang was an excellent and cheerful guide, accommodating of our different paces and interests and no doubt doing a lot of unseen organising to ensure everything ran smoothly. He was a good source of information on the fauna, flora and farming of the area. He was very ably assisted by a great team of assistant guides and porters. Drinks were nearly always waiting for us when we stopped for a break. A bit of time to explore a little of Kathmandu, Braktapur and Patan before and after the trek only added to the overall truly memorable adventure. I am happy to recommend both this trip and KE (and their local agents) for their organisation. The loan down jacket and sleeping bag were both excellent and essential. This is a great trip for any reasonably fit hill walker (even if only occasional) with a love of landscape and an interest in other cultures (oh, and not too fussed about home comfort!). Don't underestimate the ups and downs: 'undulating' takes on a completely new meaning in Nepal!

The Annapurna Sanctuary Is A Must See
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
I did this trek one week after the Yeti Mountain Home in the Everest region. I have been over parts of this route before (my 4th visit to the Annapurna massif) and was dreading the steps, the walk up to Ghorepani and the up and down nature of the trek. It was physically demanding, but well within the scope of any fit walker. The views from Ghorepani and in the Sanctuary are among the best I have ever seen. The lodges were OK. Our leader, Pasang, was excellent, ensuring that we were all cared for , that we had the medical assistance we needed. Tips: This is a 3 season trek, very hot for a few days, very cold in the Sanctuary. Having shorts, thin T Shirts is essential for the hot days. The walk up to Ghorepani is long and hot, many of us had energy bars to help us, plus some of us were affected by cramp, so plenty of water and rehydration salts (Diaralyte) were needed.

A demanding but hugely rewarding trek into the incomparable Sanctuary
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Be prepared. Lots and I mean lots of ascents and descents with mostly on steps. So, get plenty of hill miles in your legs before you go. We had an absoutely excellent leader in Rabi Gurung - the best I have trekked with. Fully committed to his clients, knowledgeable, humorous with a great personality to match. This is a worthwhile objective with some stunning scenery to match. The Yak and Yeti is a great hotel and the restaurants we ate at in Kathmandu were superb. Prepare well and you will have a great trek be it your first time in Nepal or one of many such trips.

A gem of a trek
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Easily fitted in to a two week holiday for those who have to work, this trek ticks a lot of boxes. If at all possible arriving a day early was definitely worth it. We got over the flight, had plenty of time to sort out, and time to explore too. The trail was very much busier than we had anticipated.Expect lots of people coming and going, great to have a brief chat if time allows. Every nationality, race, colour and creed are represented. Every age too from a babe in arms to well over 60. All sor ts of gear, from the well kitted out to casual shoes and a handbag. ( Definitely not recommended). The terrain is varied and quite difficult as you get higher, muddy paths, very rocky, tree roots and at one point a landslide to negotiate. And of course.. all those steps. Snow on the descent from Annapurna Base Camp made conditions tricky. However great help was received at all times from our super guide Rabi and his team, Sirdar Bhim and Sherpas Basanta and Mani. Our wonderful porters went on ahead ensuring our bags were delivered safely, and when it rained, dry. Great guide Rabi worked tirelessly from morning till night and beyond making sure we were all safe, healthy, comfortable, well fed and happy. He was in the kitchen at mealtimes checking on hygiene standards, he sorted our wi-fi, took orders for meals when we had a choice and checked on our health as we acclimatised. It was much warmer than anticipated at lower levels, be prepared for a range of temperatures. Layers, layers layers. The lodges become more basic as you get higher, but they are adequate, although struggling under the pressure of so many visitors. Wipes are essential, showers are available for a small cost but they may run out of hot water. The controls can be confusing too. Generally ignore the taps on the wall, they are obsolete, and look for the boiler! The food was good, sometimes even a choice, egg and chips was popular, proper home made chips to die for! And great pizza. Boiled safe water was available at lunch time, dinner and breakfast. Getting a visa at Kathmandu was reasonably painless, print off and fill in the single A4 form in advance, stick your photo on and when you arrive, fill in the immigration form, go to the first desk to pay your £20 and get a receipt, then proceed to the passport desk, hand over the visa form, receipt and immigration slip with your passport and the nice young man will sort it all in a couple of minutes. Your guide will be waiting for you outside to whisk you away to a delightful Hotel. ( We stayed at the Yak and Yeti). Beware prices of drinks and food! What is shown on the menu is not what you pay! Service charge and tax add nearly 25% to that. Wine is prohibitive, but hey ho, what the heck, we are on our holidays! Cheers folks what are you waiting for? Go and enjoy...

Stunning scenery with steps!
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
We had a fantastic time the scenery was spectacular and the sun gods on our side. The KE guide Rinji was great from meeting us at the airport to keeping us happy on trek. The assistant guides and porters were excellent. We were not seasoned walkers so did some training beforehand which paid off although you cannot fully prepare for steps and more steps. Yes there is a lot of up and down steps throughout the trip but we all coped and made it to ABC and back. We ate huge amounts of food all good a nd still lost a few pounds. The weather was pretty hot on most days so shirt sleeves quick drying tops recommended and only needed some warm clothes at the top.( If going in October.) We were fortunate with no rain and pretty clear skies most days. The scenery was fantastic from; the rice fields and terraces of the valley, to the rhododendron forests (not in flower till spring), jungle, bamboo, to the open valley by the Modi Khola and the more sparse landscapes of basecamp and the moraine and snowy mountains of the Sanctuary. First trip to Nepal and first with KE I can highly recommend. We also saw monkeys!!

First time for both Nepal and KE and will go again
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
This was my first trip with KE and first time to Nepal. Both exceeded my expectations. From a KE perspective all the bookings were done well including transfers from airport where I was met by our tour leader even though I arrived a few days early. The descriptions in the itinerary were all accurate and went as planned. The accommodation on the walk was basic but that is all there is, and it was more than adequate. The food was also good, in the huts there is a limited selection but there was a choice and most of it was freshly prepared using the ingredients that were available (including veg from the local gardens). The walk was well paced to allow everyone time to acclimatise. I chose this trip as it seemed to be a good 'starter' trek and it was. There is a lot of up and down but the pace made it fine for all. I would suggest that anyone doing this really get some hills beforehand to make it more enjoyable, it is 10 days of consecutive walking so good fitness helps. The 5 in our group were supported by 7 Nepalis who took care of all our needs. It was very well organised, from the internal flight to Pokhara to arranging our choice of meals. Cannot say enough how much their efforts contributed to the enjoyment of the trip. Will certainly look to use KE again in the future.

Stunning scenery especially when higher up.Annapurna region has to be the most beautiful. A lot of ascent and descent. Milan, our guide , was excellent, pacing the trek perfectly according to our individual and group needs. He cared and arranged everything tirelessly. A credit for KE to have him as their representative. The helpers were a cheerful lot and did an amazing job.Cold at ABC at night. Need warm gloves!Pack as light as possible for the porters sake. Tech gear is good. Do not need so much . Food plain and basic but fine. Bring tea bags if you want strong tea. Highly recommend apart from unnecessary first night in Kathmandu.

What a great experience.
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Having been on many trekking holidays over the years, I can honestly say this trip was one of the best and exceeded my expectations. Starting at the beginning, the flights out to Nepal and the airline used were fine (Jet Airways). We had to change at Delhi which was the normal Indian organised chaos, expect to go through several stages of security. The security process just has to be endured, they have a job to do. TIP If transferring at Delhi make sure you go to your airline desk near security to get them to annotate your onward boarding pass with DT. TIP At Kathmandu airport get to the visa machines as quick as you can and you can speed up the visa process little. TIP Change small amount of money at the airport as you can get better exchange rates in the city. TIP Watch out for the people (porters) who will carry your bags out to your transport, they will ask you for UK paper money as a tip, 100 Nrps is plenty. We were met by a KE guide at the airport, we were given a warm welcome and were on our way to our hotel in no time at all, the guide explained exactly where we were going, how long it would take and what to expect when we got there. All good. We stayed one night at the Yak and Yeti which was very comfortable. We met up with most of the rest of the group at the evening meal, and were delighted to find we were with a well balanced group as far as age and gender were concerned. It wasn't long before we realised that we were all going to get on very well. Next day travel to Pokhara was delayed by weather and/or airspace congestion, not a lot KE could do about that but we were kept well informed throughout the wait. The flight to Pokhara was very good, TIP Sitting on the starboard side gives the best views of the mountains on the way to Pokhara, Port side for the return journey. In Pokhara the group opted for a boat trip across the lake and a hike up to the Buddha Stupa. We enjoyed the afternoon and the views from the top of the hill. Hotel in Pokhara was again comfortable. I will gloss over the rest of the trip as I don't want to post any spoilers. Needless to say, as the days go on the views and contact with Nepal life get better and better. All of the Lodges were clean, comfortable and helpful. TIP if you want a hot shower make sure you get one early as solar heaters produce limited amounts of hot water. TIP always look after your hand hygiene carry hand gel and use it before you go hand to mouth! The food produced by our support team was varied, tasty and plentiful, be prepared for the effects of eating cabbage at lunch times!! It was our anniversary during the trip and I have to say a big thank you to Janak for managing to produce a fantastic decorated cake at MBC (3700m), I think the whole group enjoyed that treat. Our Guide for the trip was Dorje, He is an experienced guide and we found nothing was too much trouble for him or his team, our welfare and comfort were his primary concern, he would always ensure that the group was fed and watered at ever meal before he and his team would eat. The whole of the support team were faultless. As well as Dorje and Janak a big thank you to Pema, Raju and not to forget the very hard working porters, without whom we could not have completed the trip. I highly recommend this trip to anyone with good general fitness, you don't have to be super fit as the pace is always sensible as it should be at altitude. TIP exchange any remaining Nrps you have either in the city or at the airport as once you leave Nepal you will not be able to do so.

This was an amazing trip, I would certainly recommend it. My daughter and I were very fortunate with our trekking companions; a couple from Sandbach who were the best possible company, very easy going, helpful and fun to be with. I was surprised that the trip went ahead with only the four of us and a support team of three porters, a lead guide and his two assistants. Our sirdar was a Sherpa by the name of Bala Kaji who was a superb leader, very patient, gentle, knowledgeable and extremely suppor tive. I was very grateful that Bala took the time to describe to us so many fascinating aspects of Sherpa culture and life among the mountains of Nepal. This trip was not just about the scenery and reaching Annapurna Sanctuary, we learnt so much along the way from Bala. His support team were also great company and so friendly and cheerful. If I go again, and I certainly intend to, I will make point of trying to go on a trip with Bala as the leader. This was my second trekking adventure in Nepal. Previously I went to Everest Base Camp with a different trekking company, but I am glad I chose KE on this occasion. Better value for money, they seem to care for their in-country staff better than other trekking companies and show genuine concern for the environment. Scenically, I rather thought the Everest trek was the better of the two, which of course included a memorable flight into and back from Lukla and the grandeur of the Khumbu region. But Annapurna was just great, though for me at 63 not an easy trek by any means. The lodges along the way varied in their quality; all basic, but some were cleaner than others. Personally I didn’t take to the local food, but I was alone in our group in that respect – just too fussy! What would I recommend to other trekkers planning to go on this particular trip? I based my packing on the Everest Base Camp experience and so made a few mistakes. The trekking on this trip was much hotter (we went in October), in fact baking hot (up to 30 C lower down) so I wish I had taken a cool pair of shorts. We borrowed a down jacket and sleeping bag each from KE; no cost to us but I wish we had taken our own, they were very bulky. I wrongly assumed that our kit bags would be carried by yaks, as on the Everest trek. Consequently I gave little thought to the weight of the bags, but ended up feeling rather guilty because they were carried by porters not yaks. Remember to take a good stock of loo paper, bottles of hand gel or hand wipes for hygiene and your favourite sweets or perhaps energy gels. We were caught out by the tipping at the end of the trek. KE recommends £50 to £60 each, but with only four of us and six in the support crew, we were obliged to tip more than this. I don’t begrudge the money; it’s just that we hadn’t planned for this. It wasn’t really a problem as we reached an easy agreement with our amiable trekking partners. I would recommend arriving in Kathmandu at least one day before the trek begins, especially if you haven’t been to Kathmandu before. The start of the trip is then less rushed and you have time to relax and get to know Kathmandu. My favourite place in Kathmandu is now The Garden of Dreams near Thamel – just so peaceful, great coffee and apple pie, despite a cheeky chipmunk trying to steal my portion!

Breathtaking mountain views but.........
★ ★ ★ ★
This trek did not reach my expectations. The mountains were amazing the people very friendly, our guide and porters superb and all KE arrangements went perfectly but the Trek itself was disappointing. We arrived on 10th October and it was far warmer than we expected 25C +. You are warned that there are lots of steps in the trip notes and believe me there are LOTS of steps both up and down. I spent most of the trek looking 3 paces in front of me at the floor so as to not fall over. It was very ha rd work in the heat of the day on the lower part of the trek. The accommodation on trek was very basic but generally clean; on 3 occasions we had to share with another couple due a shortage of double rooms at higher altitudes. On the plus side we had rooms with en-suite on 2 occasions. Food was excellent and not set as detailed in the trip notes. You could choose freely from the menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner and food was a combination of western and local dishes. Guide and porters were brilliant; could not do enough for you and our guide was very careful to keep us safe from altitude and local food/ water issues. The KE flights were excellent with Etihad and we even got an upgrade to business class on the way back. The short internal flights were excellent and nothing to worry about :). Pokhera we really enjoyed; well worth a few extra days. Kathmandu was a mad place; dusty, dirty and very busy; our 2 extra nights at the end of our trip was probably 1 too many; glad to get away. Hotels in Pokhera and Kathmandu very good.

Very well led, but too many people in group.
★ ★ ★ ★
This trip was hobbled by having 17 people in our group plus two "others" who joined w/o paying at the last moment. Robi, our trip leader, was great at everything, but this was too much. Our group was continually slowed both for meals and on the trail by this army of walkers. Also note that the condition of lodging is quite poor in general. Do not expect hot showers or Western style cleanliness standards. Kathmandu is not worth any extra moments you may have to spare. All said, the moun tains are amazing and well worth seeing.

KE Adventure reply

Thank you for your review. We are pleased that you thought the mountains were amazing. There will always be lots of trekkers coming to this region but we are considering reducing the maximum group size for KE groups to 14. The two 'others' you have mentioned in your review were local Nepal tourists. They made all their own arrangements for food and lodging but apparently enjoyed the company of your group who were staying at the same lodges. Above Chomrong, this trek lies entirely within the Annapurna Conservation Area, which was the first and is the largest protected area in Nepal, rich in biological and cultural diversity. One aspect of the work to maintain this unique area is to severely restrict the amount of new building in the area and a complete ban on the burning of wood for heating water. This does mean that some of the comforts you experience with lodges in other trekking areas are not there once you get higher up the valley, but the pay-off in protecting the environment is mostly considered worth this minor inconvenience.

Best ever
★ ★ ★ ★ ★

I chose KE on my daughter's recommendation, she said that the KE team were so helpful and friendly.

I have to agree, this was by far one of the best treks I have been on. The organisation from start to finish was first class, full marks to Kami our guide and his team.

The KE team could not have been more helpful or efficient, I enjoyed the experience so much I am off to Peru end of June.

Here's looking at next year

Spectacular views, great trek
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
I chose this trip because its timing happened to match the time I could get off at work.. It turned out to be an amazing vacation. -The hiking wasn't particularly hard (max. 6 hours a day) -We slept in tea house hotels, many of which had hot/warm showers. -The food we ate was infinitely better than the dehydrated meals I'm used to, while hiking. -The crew was extremely friendly and professional. I got along well enough with one of the crew members to add him to facebook. -The views fro m Poon Hill, Annapurna base camp and Macchapuchre base camps were completely unreal. It almost looked like a painting. -The trails are very well maintained. No earthquake damage at all. -I paid for the single supplement which, because it was off-season, meant I had my own room at every stop, which was very nice. The main downside wasn't really related to KE.. there's a bit of a fuel shortage in Nepal right now due to a blockade. As a result, the December trip was a little cold/unheated at times.

Nepal is fabulous.
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
We've just come back from this trek and it was fantastic. We went to Nepal 16 years ago, and now can't think why we left it so long before returning. The country is poor, still recovering from a devastating earthquake, coping with fuel shortages as a result of the Indian blockade, but still smiling. We've been on treks in higher, more remote areas but never one with such varied landscapes; villages and terraces, bamboo forests, then the spectacular rock and snow of the Sanctuary i tself. We've always been lucky with our trek crew, but never had one quite like this; Dawa, Januk, Raju, Chandra, Tshering, and Mangale were efficient, helpful and just lovely. We've always enjoyed camping and were a bit uncertain about lodges, but they were great; very simple but really clean and with 'comfort toilets'! (Those of us who were ill throughout a 15 day trek on the Baltoro glacier and thought we'd never trek again, are allowed to develop an obsession with toilets.) If you're about to go on this trek - advice. It is very cold high up. Because of the fuel shortage there is no heating in the lodges. We were fine with really warm down jackets and sleeping bags, but if you don't have them, beg, borrow or steal them. (Actually, if it's a matter of stealing you may be better hiring them from KE!) Also, take metal drinks bottles then you can use them as hot water bottles. If you're thinking about going on this trek - advice. Nepal is 'open for business'. Tourism is 60% down this year. They need our money. Go!

an amazing experience!
★ ★ ★ ★ ★

This holiday was so well organized and the leader of the trek, Lhakpa rita, catered for our every need. He always made sure we had enough to eat and our rooms were suitable. He was friendly and approachable and made the trip a lot of fun. Nepal was amazing, the people friendly and the scenery stunning. Would definitely use KE again as we can't find any faults!
A metal water bottle is a good idea as it can be used as a hot water bottle on those cold evenings at the base camp

Fantastic Experience
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
A truly fantastic experience. From the outset, everything was extremely well organised and i was always kept fully informed.
On landing at Kathmandu airport I was met by the guide Dawa who throughout the trip acted in a very professional manner. His knowledge of all aspects of the trek, from the culture, traditions, together with the technical details was exceptional. The other guides and helpers were also excellent, always helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The programme for the t
rek had been carefully worked out to ensure a gradual acclimatisation to altitude occurred. Tea Houses provided good accommodation throughout and on arrival at them, the guides inspected the rooms to ensure suitability.
This was my first trip to Nepal and also my first ever trek, hopefully not my last. KE Adventure provided an outstanding service throughout and I would strongly recommend them to anyone wishing to Trek in Nepal.

A wonderful walk through beautiful scenery.
★ ★ ★ ★

Well organised and the leader set a good steady pace through the long climbs.
Could have done with one day less, I think the overnight at Machhapuchchhre base camp was unnecessary and it would be better to press on to Annapurna Base Camp. There's not much to do at MBC and it's very cold so the time here dragged. The short walk on the following day to ABC then meant another cold, boring day waiting at ABC.
Apart from that a great holiday that's wet my appetite for the Annurpurna circuit.
