The Everest Base Camp Trek: Walking in the Shadow of Giants

The Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek is perhaps the most famous trekking route in not just Nepal, but the world, taking you through the heart of the Khumbu region to the base of the world's highest peak at 5,364 meters (17,598 feet).

Why the Everest Base Camp trek?

The journey begins with a spectacular flight into Lukla Airport, setting the tone for an adventure of a lifetime. As you trek through the Sherpa homeland, you'll experience the rich Buddhist culture that permeates every village, monastery and prayer flag-adorned ridge.

The trail to Everest Base Camp offers unparalleled mountain views, including close encounters with Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam. All the while, along the trail you'll immerse into the local culture including a visit to the iconic Tengboche Monastery, perched dramatically against the Himalayan backdrop, where you can watch the Buddhist prayer ceremonies, the same that Hillary partook.

How difficult is the EBC?

EBC is demanding, requiring 10+ days of trekking at increasingly high altitudes. The thin air becomes noticeable early and proper acclimatisation is crucial, which is why after 40 years trekking in the Himalaya we have a unique itinerary with extra acclimatisation days.

Accommodation is primarily in teahouses, which are very comfortable compared to camping, but become more basic as you gain elevation. Mixed with this the environment becomes tougher and temperatures will plummet to below minus 20 centigrade in the mornings.

Who is EBC best for?

The Everest Base Camp trek suits experienced hikers seeking the ultimate challenging introduction to the Himalaya as well as those drawn to the mystique of the world's highest peak.

The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek: Into the Heart of the Mountains

The Annapurna Sanctuary trek, also known as the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek, leads you into a natural amphitheater surrounded by towering peaks, reaching 4,130 meters (13,549 feet) at Annapurna Base Camp.

Why the Annapruna Sanctuary Trek

Starting from the lakeside town of Pokhara, the Annapurna Sanctuary trek offers incredible diversity. You'll journey through terraced farmland, rhododendron forests that burst with colour in spring and traditional Gurung and Magar villages before entering the dramatic sanctuary.

Then the approach to Annapurna Base Camp feels like walking into a cathedral of mountains, with Annapurna I, Machapuchare (Fishtail) and Hiunchuli creating a 360-degree wall of ice and rock around you.

How difficult is the Annapurna Sanctuary trek?

At 10+ days, the ABC trek is shorter than EBC and reaches a more moderate maximum altitude. The risk of severe altitude sickness is lower and the teahouses tend to be more comfortable throughout the journey. The trail is well-maintained and the ground easier to walk on.

Who is the ABC trek for?

The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek offers a perfect introduction to high-altitude trekking without the extreme challenges of EBC. It's suitable for moderately fit hikers who want stunning mountain views and cultural immersion without pushing their limits.

The Annapurna Circuit: The Classic Loop

The Annapurna Circuit, a 10+ day trekking loop around the Annapurna massif, crosses the challenging Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters (17,769 feet) and showcases incredible geographical and cultural diversity.

Why the Annapurna Circuit trek?

This trek takes you from subtropical valleys to high alpine desert, offering arguably the most diverse trekking experience in Nepal. You'll encounter Hindu villages in the south, Tibetan Buddhist culture in the north and witness the dramatic rain shadow effect as you cross from the wet southern slopes to the arid northern landscape.

The circuit then takes you higher into the mountains providing views of Annapurna I, II, III and IV, Dhaulagiri, Machapuchare and numerous other peaks.

How hard is the Annapurna Circuit trek?

The circuit combines the best of both worlds: spectacular mountain scenery and incredible cultural diversity. But with this comes the challenge. The Thorong La Pass crossing is a genuine adventure in itself. This trek is challenging, but rewarding, it shouldn't be underestimated but that shouldn't stop you either!

Who is this trek for?

The Annapurna Circuit trek requires 2-3 weeks and significant fitness. It's perfect for experienced trekkers who want to see everything Nepal has to offer in one epic journey and don't mind the longer commitment.
