Enjoyable holiday
Finland Wilderness Snowshoe Adventure
I enjoyed this holiday. It wasn't massively strenuous, so it should be within the capabilities of any adequately fit walker. This isn't a mountain holiday - the terrain is reasonably flat, basically snowshoeing through the forest (including low ridges between the various lakes) and over the frozen lakes (50 cm thick ice). As it's in the forest so there aren't any major views, but it's a different (and nice) experience from snowshoeing in the mountains, and given the northerly latitude there was ... plenty of snow. Bear in mind that it could be very cold (it was below -10 C on some days on my trip) so definitely bring the recommended cold weather clothing. As discussed in the trip notes, there were people there from several different European counties who'd booked with various tour companies. But English was the only common language, and all the guiding was in English. The main cabin has hot water, electricity and Wi-Fi and was quite comfortable. The two cabins on the three day trip had no electricity but and were more basic but were still reasonably comfortable - albeit rather cold until the log stoves heated them up. Saunas are available on all days - they didn't do a lot for me but other people really enjoyed them. I'd also recommend taking an extra day before or after to look round Helsinki - easily done as you need to change flights in Helsinki anyway (if flying from the UK).

A fantastic trip!
Secret Sierras of the Costa Blanca
This was a brilliant trip from start to finish. Our guide, Jose, was outstanding. He was lots of fun, very knowledgeable about the area, and paced us well. It rained on the first 2 days and Jose took us on lower level and easier walks than planned, then later in the week added an extra walk taking us to the top of Aitana. The walking was challenging at times but Jose was so encouraging and we all made it to the top of Puig Campana, one of the many highlights of the week. The views were ... stunning. We stayed in 3 different places, all of which were great. Food was excellent and plentiful, and our hosts were excellent, particularly at Benimantell and Castell de Castells. We had such fun!

Kilimanjaro - The Majestic mountain
Kilimanjaro Rongai Route
Very good trip. KE's management faultless as always. The route itself is good for acclimatization. Veg food is available everyday, and you would appreciate what you are getting considering where you are. The hotel selection was good as well. For the route, I believe the Lemosho route is better though. On Rongai route - be prepared for the final climb. It is brutal. first 6 days are very easy (Walk in the park really). Final day starts at 1.00 am in cold and scree. It is steep and very very ... demanding. By the time you reach Gillmans point, you are only hoping for it to be the summit. And then you have 2 more hours to go :-). Again, KE's management, crew selection cannot be faulted. They are easy 5*. I have given overall trip 4* only for the route compared to Lemosho .

Thank you for your review Binoy. It's good to know you would have given us five stars if you had chosen our Lemosho option. For details of the different routes we offer, check out our 'Which route to climb Kilimanjaro?' page.

Best trip ever
Everest the Hard Way Trek
Absolutely the best trip ever. Who knew going alone to Himalayas with 7 strangers and crew members would turn out out to be the best trip you have ever had. Everything that KE did on this trip was faultless and an easy 5*. The food, the service, the trek, the crew members, and more importantly the management of everything was perfect. The trip in itself is just mind blowing. It is very long. You need to have good fitness, specially going over the passes. You climb extremely slowly (right thing ... to do) and this allows you to really enjoy the scenery and not burn yourself out. Every single night stop is brilliant and has its own character. You really start appreciating what you are getting when you realise where you are and how difficult it would be to get everything there. I would recommend this trip without a doubt to anyone who has decent cardiovascular fitness and can stay in secured wilderness (lodges) for 20 odd days. The views, KE's management and the whole of Sagarmatha region will not disappoint you.

Magnificent mountain walking
Secret Sierras of the Costa Blanca
This is a wonderful trip to an area we had not visited before. Jose had planned an excellent and thoughtful itinerary for the week (it rained for the first 2 days but Jose adapted his plans and took us on some great walks, our safety and enjoyment always his priority). Once the weather cleared, we were able to fully appreciate his careful planning and knowledge of the routes and mountain flora, as well as the stunning views. Each of the 3 bases was excellent - with fabulous food and friendly ... staff and the walks were great. Be prepared for a variety of terrain. Good boots and walking poles highly recommended! Jose's knowledge, patience, and great sense of humour made this a very special holiday in an amazingly beautiful part of the world.

SNOWSHOE SAFARI IN THE STUNNING HAUTE SAVOIE
Secret Alps - Snowshoe Trails of Haute Savoie
Exceptional sunshine and cold nights ensured distant views of Mont Blanc and good snow conditions above a certain altitude. Our Tour Leader expertly adapted the itinerary to suit the conditions, staying above the snow line while leading us through a wide variety of scenery representing this stunning region. Encounters with wildlife such as Alpine ibex were particularly memorable, with our Tour Leader taking notable care to respect the natural environment. Explanations of the geology, history ... and local culture were well received and the opportunity to savour Savoyard hospitality was appreciated. This is a trip that satisfies all the senses and delivers a very satisfactory holiday experience.

A great snowshoeing experience in wonderful scenery
Snowshoe Traverse of the Chablais
This holiday delivered everything we hoped for - great walking and snowshoeing in a fabulous unspoilt area. On many of the days we hardly saw anybody else. The scenery and views were spectacular - helped by sunshine and piercing blue skies each day! We were the last trip of KE's season, and the snow had disappeared on lower slopes - but there was still plenty of opportunity for snowshoeing. The hotels were charming, clean and comfortable, and the food delicious. (My husband and I are ... pescatarian, and we were well catered for). Paul, our guide, was professional, knowledgeable and clearly determined to make sure everybody was safe and having a good time. He was great company and helped to make the holiday very special. Expect some long and steep ascents and descents, but Paul set a pace that seemed to suit the whole group. Highly recommend this traverse - a beautiful varied trek.

We loved our KE Lycian Way Trip
Walking The West Lycian Way
We loved our KE Lycian Way Trip. The booklet for finding your way was excellent. The Way is marked with red and white painted bands, a bit like the Grande Randonee or GR in France. The marks are ancient and occasionally refreshed but go back generations. They led us all over the Turkish coast from Fethiye to Demri in the West the landscape was bathed in Sunshine , beautiful trees and signs of the Lycians existence - sarcophagi often in the early stages on the rocks above, very dramatic ,castles ... and cisterns and ancient signs of villages. The sea was deep turquoise and inviting but a bit chilly even in the sun.Our luggage was uplifted each day and we walked an average of 10-15 kms every day often in our shorts, occasionally missing a way finder but KE’s local guide was a phonecall a way and we always made it to yet another delightful country hotel met by lovely Turkish people and delicious food - wonderful salads and freshly cooked fish -amazing. We chose February as it can be grey and cold in Scotland at that time and were so delighted it was the opposite in Turkey! We loved it all and have great memories.

A week well spent
Walking Undiscovered Tenerife and Pico Teide

Was not sure what to expect on a walking trip to Tenerife. Booked last minute as something to do in the sun and to begin getting 'match fit' for hiking again. As such, towards the end of the first day was a bit 'character building' for me however this day and every other day was soooo enjoyable. Varied, fascinating landscape. Very enthusiastic, knowledgeable guide. Fantastic crowd of like minded travellers. Fully enjoyed and fully recommend.

Enjoyable hike down the GR131 with a fun bunch of people!
Walking Lanzarote - The Island of Eternal Spring
This trip did what it said on the tin and we hiked the entire GR131 from the north of the island to the south. Highlights were the walks along the Famara Cliffs on day 2, and day 4 with the ascent of Mt Guardilama, the second highest peak, followed by walking through Lanzarote's strange looking vineyards and a wine tasting at a bodega afterwards. The accommodation was comfortable, tour leader Erik had loads of character, enthusiasm and an infectious sense of humour, and he was ably assisted by ... co-driver Laetitia on logistics. Some gourmet picnics were produced in some very picturesque spots! Very enjoyable week, despite lots of sirocco dust causing a haze on several days. The trip dovetails well with KE's Fuerteventura walking week but be careful to coordinate the (not inconsiderable) taxi transfer costs with other traveller doing the combination.

Great week of walking in January, despite the sirocco dust!
Hidden Trails of Fuerteventura
A very full mid-January week of walking the best parts of Fuerteventura, based in La Lajita in the south of the island. Gwen was a wonderful tour leader and adapted the itinerary as appropriate in response to the strong sirocco wind blowing sand from the Sahara and creating a haze on several days. The apartments were very comfortable and Gwen's picnics showcased many of the island's specialities, especially the cheese. Highlights were the walks on the Cofete Peninsular and in the hills above ... Betancuria. Gwen also arranged a magnificent Paella which we enjoyed in the apartments one evening and the standard of food in the restaurants in La Lajita was high. Very enjoyable week. I was able to continue onto KE's Lanzarote trip the following week; my advice to people doing this is to only book your inter-island ferry once you arrive in Fuerteventura so that you can co-ordinate the (not inconsiderable) cost of the taxi transfers to/from the ferry ports with other people doing this combination.

Fantastic Week of Snowshoeing in the Chablais
Snowshoe Traverse of the Chablais
The great strength of this holiday is that it provides the opportunity to get to know a beautiful and little visited part of the French Alps. Our group of 4 with guide stayed in a different village each night and were treated to a high standard of accommodation, excellent food and a warm welcome. Each day starts with a long ascent, before becoming more undulating passing over isolated cols with great views and traversing forested mountain slopes, before finishing with the inevitable descent ... back to the valley floor for the night. Our guide Paul was excellent and a pleasure to be with in the mountains. All in all a top trip!

Well organised traverse of Lanzarote on the GR131
Walking Lanzarote - The Island of Eternal Spring
Firstly, this trip dovetails superbly with KE’s Fuerteventura holiday - combining it is a simple matter of using the cheap inter-island ferry which takes about 30 mins. The agency that KE uses on both islands is very well run, with outstanding guides, exceptional accommodation and superb food. TheLanzarote trip follows the GR across the island, deviating only to cross the cliffs and to climb a volcano, giving terrific views. This trip also includes afternoon cultural visits, optional wine ... tasting, and a relaxing visit to Graciosa. Unusually all meals are included - these were of a high standard. Our leader, Erik was brilliant, ably assisted by Lettie. This is a strongly recommended trip, all the more so over the English winter when it can be hard to find suitable walking trips that don’t involve long haul flights or third world countries.

Great Hiking in a hidden gem!
El Salvador Volcano Trek
El Salvador has gotten a "bad rap" in our country (US). Contrary to media presentations, the people were lovely and welcoming. The country is beautiful. Our guide, Francis, was lovely. He was very enthusiastic about his country and a wonderful ambassador. The hikes were challenging (especially San Miguel/Chaparrastique). The trip notes did not adequately prepare me for climbing in scree... In fact, the trip notes and web site in general need updating. Be sure to take an indigo dying lesson in ... Suchitoto at Arte Anil. Irma is FAB!! On the down side, my daughter is vegetarian, and 2 of the 5 lunches provided by the tour were NOT vegetarian. "They didn't know"..... Not sure whose job it was to inform or make it right.. Thank goodness I had a big supply of peanut butter! Finally, the last 2 nights were at a beach hotel owned by the KE rep. Full disclosure, we did everything wrong when we "released" sea turtles at the beach. Beware! (Don't touch them with bare hands, don't release until dark, don't release in the water). Despite, the negatives I have listed, it was well worth it!!!

KE Adventure reply

Thank you for your review. We are pleased you enjoyed your holiday despite finding some of the hiking challenging. It's great to hear you thought your KE guide was a wonderful ambassador for El Salvador. Thank you for letting us know about the 2 lunches which weren't vegetarian. We will investigate how this occurred and make sure it doesn't happen in the future. At KE we don't condone the releasing of turtles by our clients and we have spoken to our local agent about this.

Laurence Hallett's Finland Winter Venture
Finland Winter Activity Week
A widely varied adventure week in snowbound forests and frozen lakes. Flying into the small airport at Kuusamo, a 40 minute drive took us to the activity centre in a remote and picturesque setting. Accommodated in 4 bed (but 2 person) lodges for the 8 days, the lodges are well equipped with 2 two tier bunks, kitchen with microwave and kettle, sofa, television and en-suite bathroom facilities. The only thing maybe participants would like to bring is their own brew kit. I brought Nescafe 3 in 1 ... coffee sachets and they proved to be a good way to start and end a day. Meals were taken in the restaurant in the main building - and a wide variety of food was given over the course of the stay. The activity centre is a family run business and meals cooked by the owners - giving a true meaning to the phrase 'home cooked'. All refreshments (tea, coffee cold soft drinks) came with the meals; leaving beer and wine to purchase at our leisure.

In the forests and frozen lakes surrounding the activity centre, we were guided by Elisa, a young newly qualified Winter guide. Despite being recently accredited - Elisa literally has a lifetime of Winter wilderness experience; and it was clearly evident from the opening day, until the very end that we were in the hands of an expert. Our group had little or no experience and she rightly took everyone from scratch - giving clear explanations and demonstrations. Our trips into the countryside by cross country ski and snow shoe gave an excellent learning experience with ample time for resting and photos etc. The skiing and 2 day snow shoe treks were well served with lunch breaks at remote huts where coffee and snacks were heated on open pine wood fires.

The 2 day snow shoe trek included an overnight stop in a remote lodge where Elisa hosted us well with reindeer stew for the main evening meal. In fact - on all days, the food was 'self serve - all you can eat' and plentiful. Saunas featured frequently on the trip - and proved a great way to unwind at the end of a day. A key event on the week was a lengthy husky sled trip into the wilderness. Formed into 2 man teams, with tuition given by the custodians of a nearby husky business - 1 person driving and the other sitting, blanket wrapped on the sled - taking photos!

Some ice hole fishing (I caught 2 perch!) and snow hole construction completed the activities. The kit list is comprehensive but the optional clothing hire will see you through anything the Finnish Winter can throw at you. Be prepared for temperatures down to minus 24 degrees C in January. The trip wound up with an end of week reindeer stew and back to our cabins we went to pack for the home journey. Midway through packing and relaxing - I got a frantic WhatsApp call from Elisa offering me outside to view a surprise appearance by the Northern lights! They did not disappoint, and proved a great way to top off this Winter activity trip. All in all - a magical venture, well hosted by Elisa, and recommended!

Memorable
Sweden Arctic Family Adventure
Thanks to KE and particularly Tom for help and support when traveling at a worrying time. Great holiday. Highly recommend it. Dog sledding through the snowy forest and on the frozen lake was magical. Fussy eaters beware that the menu is very limited but the food is of a high standard. Cabins clean and warm. Drying cupboards are fab and used every day. We travelled with our 11 year old. Guides friendly and accommodating. Anneta was the stand out for us, giving great insight into the life of the ... Sami people. Highly recommend the trip and KE. Will be booking our next trip soon.
