Overview

With its rugged coastal scenery, impressive volcanic geology and lush levada trails, the Atlantic island of Madeira is a walker's paradise and a haven for keen botanists. Moving around Madeira and staying in different villages, we enjoy ever-changing sea views and have access to a variety of super day-walks. Following age-old paths and also hiking alongside Madeira's amazing network of irrigation channels known as levadas, we walk and hike through terraced farmland, explore extensive laurel forest, negotiate levada tunnels and cross jagged green ridges to find the best viewpoints. The scenery is far more varied than you may imagine and the floral diversity is remarkable! Highlights of this Madeira walking holiday include the enchanting green valley of Riberio do Poco, the dramatic mountain views at Encumeada and the spectacular trail that links Madeira's highest peaks, Pico Ruivo (1862m) and Pico do Arieiro (1810m). With daily walks of between 4 and 6 hours and plenty of time to enjoy our atmospheric sea-side locations and comfortable hotels, this is a brilliant walking holiday in Madeira.

Is this holiday for you?

For this holiday we have picked the best walks on Madeira. We’ll explore the island on a series of good day hikes and walks, any of which can be considered as optional. The walks themselves are mostly on good trails often following the famous 'levadas' or irrigation channels, but there are exciting sections including levada tunnels (the longest is just over 1km!), which lead us deep inside the hillside, and some places where there is considerable exposure (normally with a protective fence). Generally each day's walk will be from 5 – 6 hours, although the walk along the Levado Ribeira da Janela will be a little longer. To fully explore the island’s volcanic ridges and dramatic coastline we also need to be prepared for a reasonable amount of ascent and descent (on average around 650m ascent and 850m descent per day). Some walks can be cut short with a short taxi ride if you are feeling a little tired. On the majority of days we will also finish at a cafe where we can enjoy a coffee (or cold beer!) whilst we unwind after our walk. Our accommodation each night is in well appointed hotels, the majority of which have swimming pools where we can cool off after the walk, and simple spa facilities to which we have free access! Evenings will be spent enjoying the good food and, of course, sampling the local Madeiran wine!

Why KE?

We’re proud of all the 5* reviews for this holiday, which includes the best walks on Madeira. With overnights in 4 different locations, this is a real exploration of the island. Madeira is a destination that exceeds expectations.... Click here to read about KE's Tom Partington's first hand experience hiking the levadas and peaks of Madeira.

After breakfast at the hotel we take our picnic lunch and transfer (35 mins) to Curral das Freiras (650m), which lies deep in a steep sided valley. Our first walk starts in the shade of the chestnut, eucalyptus and pine, trees as we zigzag upwards. Soon coming into broom and gorse scrub we follow a stoney path carved from the rock before reaching a viewpoint where we can see Pico Ruivo and Pico do Arieiro (sometimes spelt Areeiro) across the valley. Further we reach today's high point at Boca do Cerro (1300m). The panoramic paths offers wonderful views into the central massif and the Paul da Serra plateau. We then continue in a northerly direction along the ridge where the path is flanked by bracken and broom with few trees. We cross over a stone-arched bridge which spans the rocky gorge on the Ribeiro do Poco continuing to Curral Jangao. We then pass by various peaks and come into the shade of the laurels and ascent a slope dominated by eucalyptus and we cross the stream at Poco. The path then opens up again and we have fine views of Pico Grande before we arrive at our accommodation at Boca da Encumeada (1007m).

This morning we transfer (50 mins) to Paul do Mar harbour. From here we climb steeply along the 'Camino Real' (the old cobbled trail) crossing the Ribeira Seca in a gorge and continuing upwards past fig trees and prickly pears to the village of Prazeres at 650m. We then head westerly following a levada Calheta/Nova, one of the Maderia walking classics through agricultural land and pine forests. We pass a few charming small villages and rivers as we contour gently downwards. At the village of Faja da Ovelha we may have time for a coffee or cool drink before we enjoy the beautiful descent to Paul do Mar. The views over the sea and across to the cliffs opposite are spectacular. It is possible to take a taxi down, 15 minutes (own expense) if the knees are tired. From Paul do Mar we transfer to Porto Moniz (50 mins) on the north-west tip of the island, where we will stay for the next 2 nights. Porto Moniz is famous for its natural swimming pools which are located right in front of our hotel.

A transfer (30 mins) brings us to Fonte do Bispo (1230m) at the top of the levada near Galhano where we start our days sensational walk following the Levada Ribeira da Janela down to Lamaceiros. This is really a gem of a walk through a series of exciting tunnels, splendid views and rock arches. Walking through bilberry and candleberry filled pockets we enter the first of our 8 tunnels along this levada. We have grand views from our path high above the valley with the Ribeira da Janela below. We pass beautiful waterfalls with rock pools and an array of ferns and mosses clinging for life on the rocky surfaces. We descend into the Janela valley with its densely-wooded sides before ending our walk surrounded by hydrangeas and apple trees in Lamaceiros just above Porto Moniz. We have a short transfer back to our hotel. IMPORTANT NOTE The Levada Ribera da Janela is currently closed due to a landslip. This is a common occurrence in Madeira due to its topography, and so we have many tried and tested alternative walks for you to enjoy which are not only similar in terms of difficulty but also offer the same beautiful views! If it is not possible to do this walk we will instead transfer (40 mins) to Rabacal and walk the Levada do Risco to Risco Waterfall and Lagoa do Vento and back on the Levada do Alecrim. 6hrs walking/500 ascent/100 descent

We drive approx 15 mins to the most westerly point of Madeira to reach the starting point of our walk at Achadas da Cruz. Today’s walk is splendid with total immersion in the Madeira countryside. The narrow path starts at the cable car station, which is used to transport wine and other products up and down the steep slopes to and from the fertile soils near the sea called faja. It is also not unusual to see farmers coming up and down with their crops. We walk along the coast to the beach not far from where the explorers Joao Goncalves Zarco and Tristao Vaz Teixeira anchored their ships in 1419. We ascent up and along the Vereda de Tristao river to a viewpoint where we have magnificent views of the sea, cliffs and Santa village. From here we descent along an old paved path to reach Porto Moniz. From here we transfer along the coast to our next stop in the pretty town of Santana in preparation for our walk tomorrow. Santana has classic Madeirense A-frame homes prettily painted with thatched roofs to the ground.

We leave the coast after breakfast and drive for 15 minutes to Queimadas (880m) just below Pico das Pedras. Starting at the lovely thatched houses our walk starts on an easy path with some tremendous views of the surrounding mountains and sea. We then join the Levada Caldeirao and follow it past the ferns, lush, rainforest like flora. If we have the energy we can opt for a slight detour to the Caldeirao Verde waterfalls, which can be very dramatic after some rain. We then descend steeply downwards on log steps, through the heather, into the woods, and finally past agricultural fields and pretty houses to Ilha (350m). Here we may have time for a coffee or glass of refreshing wine before returning in the vehicle for the 15 mins back to our hotel in Santana. Please note that in wet weather the 4 kilometre descent to Ilha can be slippery and potentially dangerous and we may choose to walk the route in reverse in these conditions.

After our week walking we have the climax with the highest point on the island Pico Ruivo (1862m). Leaving Santana after breakfast we drive for 30mins to Achadas do Teixeira (1592m). Quickly we reach a ridge with great views ahead of the mountains, and down through the valleys to the sea. Ahead of us we see the peaks of Torres as we walk along our path through the boulders and rocky outcrops, and across sections of bare pumice. We pass the refuge (possibly stopping for some refreshments) before we continue up the heather-clad slopes to the summit of Pico Ruivo, the top of Madeira. Splendid views surround us of the rock, verdant valleys and blue sea. After the excitement of our achievement our walk continues on an exposed section of path deeply cut into the cliff face before zigzagging up to the base of Torres and a high level path is found. We then descend through the vegetated slopes and through a tunnel to Pico do Gato and then a brief but sharp ascent Pico Do Cidrao. All along this route the views are marvellous. Descending and saying goodbye to the mountains we arrive at Pico do Arieiro (1810m). Our waiting vehicle then takes us back the 35 minutes to Funchal and our hotel. Tonight we have a celebratory dinner in Funchal town.

TRAVEL TO YOUR DESTINATION

If flying from the UK there are low cost airlines available to the start and from the end of your holiday.

To benefit from full financial protection, ease your holiday planning, and avoid dealing with airlines, we can book scheduled flights from the UK as part of a flight inclusive package. Scheduled flights are usually more expensive that low cost alternatives, however potentially less stressful if your flight is cancelled or delayed. If you book flights through KE Adventure Travel we will offset the carbon of your flight.

The group will meet at the group hotel in Funchal.

There will be a single timed transfer from the airport to the group hotel departing in the early afternoon on Day 1 of the Land Only itinerary.

On the last day of the Land Only itinerary there will be a single timed transfer from the hotel to the airport.

Anyone may join the group transfers by prior arrangement. Travelling as a group or on public transport saves energy. If this is not practical, we can provide private transfers at an additional cost. Taxis are also available and there is a reliable airport bus service.

Hotel contact details and an emergency number will be provided with your booking confirmation.

All meals are included in the holiday price from dinner on Day 1 to breakfast on Day 8.

Water from the taps may not be drinkable in all locations on this trip - please check with your guide. We recommend taking water purification tablets and a reusable bottle with a filter such as Water-to-Go, which can both be used to help make safe other water sources. Please note that we do not encourage the purchase of single use plastic bottles.

Madeiran food is fresh and delicious. Many of the local dishes are prepared from ingredients grown on the island or caught from the sea. Popular dishes include:

Espetada - Grilled beef marinaded in garlic, bayleaf and rock salt and cooked on a skewer made from local laurel wood.

Espada com banana e maracuja (black scabbard fish with banana and passionfruit) - This unusual sounding dish features on just about every menu!

Bolo del Mel (honey cake) - This deliciously dark and dense slab of treacle-filled goodness is Madeira’s oldest and most moreish dessert and is great with coffee. There is an active coffee culture in Madeira and one of Funchal's small cafes are the perfect place to relax and enjoy your first 'Bica' of the week. A Bica is the Portuguese equivalent of an Espresso, but served in a slightly more generous portion and smoother to the taste.

Madeira wine is world famous and there are vineyards all over the island. However there are also many local wines which are well priced and of reasonable quality – and it will always be plentiful!

Evening meals will be taken either at the hotel or a nearby local restaurant and there will be plenty of opportunity to try all of Madeira’s most famous dishes during the holiday.

Breakfasts will be continental with tea, coffee, bread, jams and fruit.

You will be given a packed lunch to carry on each day's walk. This normally consists of a sandwich made with cheese, tomatoes, olives, ham or other meats, or sometimes a pasta salad, plus some fruit. We recommend that you take a small tupperware box (and spork) to carry your lunch.

The group will spend 2 nights at a hotel in Funchal, within walking distance of the port, city centre and market, 1 night in a hotel in the mountains at Encumeada, 2 nights in a sea from hotel in Porto Moniz, with an indoor pool and adjacent to the natural swimming pools, and 2 nights in a hotel with a pool in Santana. All hotels are comfortable 2/3 star, with en suite rooms and well located.

Accommodation is based on twin share. If you are travelling by yourself, you will be paired up with another single client of the same sex. A limited number of single rooms are available for a supplementary cost. If you are planning to extend your holiday, additional nights at the group hotel are available on request.

The group will be led by a professional and qualified tour leader.

This holiday does not involve any significant ascent to altitude and we would not expect any altitude issues with this trip.

We estimate that approximately €100-150 should be sufficient to cover all personal expenses including tips for your guide. If you buy many drinks in the afternoon/evenings you may need slightly more cash. Cash can be withdrawn from ATMs at the airport and the main towns, and credit cards can also be used to pay for most goods and services.

Tipping is the accepted way of saying ‘thank you’ to your leader and local team. Tipping is entirely voluntary and should be dependent on good service. We recommend that you decide levels of tipping and give any tips as a group rather than from individual group members.

For this holiday you should take one piece of luggage and a daypack. Luggage with wheels is useful for this holiday. For international flights please check your baggage allowance with your airline.

For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in ‘Dates and Prices’ table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status and so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements.

Europe

Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:

  • less than 10 years old on the day you enter (check the ‘date of issue’)

  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

For the latest details on visiting countries within the EU or the European Economic Area (EEA), please check the UK Government website

The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required, and you should have at least 2 blank pages for each country that you visit.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Please ensure that you check for the latest advice before travel. For the most up to date information on entry requirements, please visit the UK Government website.

If you have a severe allergy please inform the KE office before you travel. We will do all we can to help, but we cannot guarantee an allergy free environment on KE trips. You will need to carry your own treatment for the allergy with you, as 'adrenaline auto-injectors' are not carried as standard by KE leaders and staff. You should inform your leader on arrival of your allergy, and let them know where you keep your adrenaline pen.

Vaccinations

You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you require any specific vaccinations.

GHIC / Medical cover

UK residents should carry a free Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). This entitles you to state provided medical treatment when you're visiting an EU country or Switzerland. This is not a substitute for medical travel insurance which is vital when travelling overseas.

The currency for part or all of this holiday is the Euro.

Getting some additional exercise before coming on an active holiday makes a lot of sense. The fitter you are, after all, the more enjoyable you will find the experience. You should be aerobically fit and comfortable with walking 3 to 6 hours for consecutive days. Hill walking, with a good amount of ascent and descent, is the best training. Running, cycling and swimming are also good for developing cardiovascular fitness and stamina.

Madeira has a mild sub-tropical climate, with the Gulf Stream ensuring pleasant warm temperatures all year round. The hottest months are July and August with average temperatures around 23 ºC, in February and November the maximum temperature is around 18-20 ºC. There would be no beautiful greenery in Madeira without a little rain, however there are many micro climates across the island, with the southern lowlands being the driest and the mountainous northern parts receiving the most rain. Madeira generally has sunshine all year around, with May through to September being the driest months with very little rain. October through to March can be wetter, but with still just an average of 6 days of rain per month.

As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's ‘Travel Aware campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that prior to travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCDO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: www.travel.state.gov for essential travel advice and tips.

KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe.  Should the FCDO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation.  We receive regular updates direct from the FCDO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground.  If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office.

KE do not encourage the use of single use plastic items. We are ensuring that our agents all over the world are working together to reduce the problem and educate those around them. We are leading by example in our KE office by reducing our plastic use.

Everything about the trip was fabulous, from the communications prior to the trip, to the organisation of the hikes and accommodation, and the excellent guide, Nuno. This was my first hiking holiday and I couldn't have picked a better one. Our guide, Nuno, was brilliant. His experience, leadership and organisational skills were great. Being a local, his knowledge of the levadas and mountains, and the history of Madeira, was excellent. The accommodation was as expected and all hotels were cl ean and comfortable with good food and service.

Outstanding walking trip for beginner/intermediate walker/hiker

Guide Nuno Portela was outstanding. He took care of and managed a group well that ranged from someone on their first hike to highly experienced hikers and made us all feel comfortable and at home. His knowledge of the flora fauna and mountain geography was exemplary. Details of each day were provided and I never felt stressed or under pressure on the trip. Food and restaurants selected were outstanding especially last night. Hotels were fine 4/5. The mountains and Levada of Madeira provide out standing scenery. I would thoroughly recommend this trip for all hikers. To get a sense of distance covered each day here are the miles for each of the 6 days: 9.76, 8.95, 11.62, 8.29, 9.45, 11.57. Note you will be going up and down some significant mountains during each walk.

Excellent communication with K E Adventure who efficiently booked additional hotel stays with transfers and provided a professional and experienced guide. Efficient staff. Our guide Jorge competently managed the challenges presented by the adverse weather conditions. Jorge was in regular contact with the office to ensure our paths were open and safe to use. Although we were disappointed to miss the first days walk we were able to enjoy the rest of the holiday. Jorge clearly has a high level of c ompetence and experience to lead walking groups. He shared his knowledge of the geology, nature and history together with its local culture which added to our enjoyment. We enjoyed his company at the evening meals where he always remained professional but friendly at all times.

As a solo traveller I felt confident that I was in safe hands. This was the first time I had travelled with KE but will definitely be travelling with them again, all walk options were to show the variety of terrain in Maderia and I feel we explored as many options as possible. Jorge was extremely knowledgeable on all things Maderia and with a group of very differing abilities he tried to accommodate everyone as much as was possible, he certainly has an affinity with his homeland and passion for the environment all conveyed in an enthusiastic manner.

I did this trip in April 2022. It's an excellent walking holiday and very well organised. Our guide Nuno was exceptional. The views are spectacular and the flora wonderful. Lots of accent and descent on well made 'stairs' can be quite strenuous and the lavadas are not for those who suffer from vertigo. But it's all worth it! Very good accomodation as well. Thoroughly recommend this trip.

Fantastic week in Madeira
★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Madeira is a wonderful place to explore and the mountains are just spectacular. Great hotels, food amazing, diverse range of treks through the week and overall a fantastic week made all the better by Jorge our guide who was 5-star! Probably a level 4 trip rather than 5, although definitely a few challenging parts during the week. Overall, highly recommended!

Beautiful island, great walks, superb leader in Jorge.
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
I joined a small group of 6 in early June and had a fabulous week. It was warm and humid which made the walks (for me) quite hard at times. The leader Jorge was top notch, he spent the whole week with us staying in all the hotels as we travelled round. He was supremely fit, had a a great knowledge of the walks and all the beautiful flowers and trees/forests we encountered. He also had a great sense of humour and we shared many laughs during the week (he spoke excellent English). Hotels were all fine, not as good as those I stayed at in Tenerife but all good, clean and plenty to eat at breakfast. Packed lunches were good (very good the first 4 days), dinners together at restaurants chosen by Jorge were very tasty and plenty of food on offer, especially our final meal together back in Funchal, that was really excellent local food. I enjoyed a couple of swims in the sea which was needed after hot walks. Very hard to find fault with the whole holiday and I'd highly recommend it.

A wonderful experience!
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Madeira is a beautiful island, with each day of the walking programme offering something different to the previous day. Everything was well organised in terms of walks, daily transfers, accommodation, meals etc. Our guide, Jorge, was excellent - knowledgeable, helpful, patient and good fun! I feel that previous feedback regarding lunches has been taken on board - with the exception of 1 day, we had very good lunches - the first 4 days in particular were fantastic. This was a brilliant trip & amp; one that I would definitely recommend.

Having travelled with KE many times i can honestly say this was up there as one of the best. A great mix of walking, climbing and being immersed in the culture of this wonderful island. Our guide Roberto was full of knowledge and enthusiasm whilst caring for our safety too. It was great to be in a group that gelled so well from day one we all became good friends by the end of the trip. The food, hotels and sea front bars were excellent. Overall a brilliant holiday!

Second KE adventure and it did not disappoint. Some friends referred to Madeira being for 'Saga', but definitely not. Beautiful island, with amazing & tough walks. Guide Roberto, was knowledgeable, inspiring & fun to be with. Group of 10 gelled together well.

Challenging
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
The holiday was well organised, I was a little apprensive on booking for have a fear of shear drops, but your guide out there was outstanding Roberto looked after me on the walks, and how he managed to get me round, I still find it all to him, I so pleased I went and looking forward to the next one, the only small note on packed lunches the sandwiched were not to my liking, I would have preferred Ham and cheese most British do, not tuna steaks off the night before a Orange not a apple and maybe a fruit drink, apart from that had a fantastic time special thanks to Roberto he is a credit to your company

Great mix of walking covering all the Island has to offer
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Very good mix of walking - the peaks and the coast as well as the Levadas. Excellent Guide in Roberto. Hotels room fine - you might need to use your head torch to read your book in bed! So good to see so much of the island. Transport links worked well. Dinners weren't exciting but OK and filled you up. But lunches were dreadful. At start of week you get salad in a container which can't cope with being in a rucksac while you're walking. Even if you decant it into the tupperware box you're asked to bring, and later in the week when the salad gets put directly into the tupperware box, then the salads were all pretty awful taste wise. Bland and un-interesting. Also, if the weather isn't being kind the last thing you want to stop and eat is a salad. What is wrong with a decent sandwich? The Santana Hotel were the only ones who could cope with that - though I found out when I got home that they did manage to damage my lunch box - so don't bring anything that you mind being damaged. I understand you are ignoring what the guide is telling you about the lunches. please don't. He's right. When he's given dressings to put on the salads - well the container didn't make it in one piece to him - and wouldn't have coped at all in a rucksack while you walk. These lunches may be good if you are just sight seeing but if you're walking up and down hills they are worse than useless. Please do something about them

Superb Walking Island
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
What a fabulous way to see and experience the varied scenery of Madeira, and thanks to Roberto for being are superb guide, and such a chatty character. Throughout the trip, he shared his vast knowledge on all things associated with Madeira, ranging from culture, history, and origins of the diverse landscapes. The walks ranged from steep zigzagging cliff paths, gentle meanders along Lavada trails, and steep mountain paths, with the highlight being the ascent of Pico Ruivo (the highest point of Ma deira) and the horseshoe ridge-walk around to Pico do Arieiro. It was also good to stay in a variety of locations on the island, enabling us to enjoy the views whilst being transported to hotels, and seeing the different towns where the hotels were located. The hotels we used were excellent, and although some had swimming pools, we didn't find the time to take advantage of a swim. All in all and excellent trip, and if you love walking and high jagged peaks, this is certainly a place not to be missed!

KE planners get top marks for a superbly well thought out programme that selects the best and most diverse walks in Madeira. I loved the variety and the way we stayed in different parts of the Island. Our guide Roberto was outstanding. Yes, these walks are adventurous and most need a head for heights however all our group of 60 year olds coped fine and got on great.

Dear future traveller with KE Adventure Holidays. I'm afarid I can't give a very accurate review for this trip as I had to curtail my holiday owing to illness but from what I did experience I have no hesitation in recommending this trip to others. A special mention must be made regarding Roberto the guide who was a truly inspiring and utterly dedicated to his job as well as being extremely kind and thoughtful. Also too, Nubelia, the agent on the ground in Fuchal could not have been mor e helpful. I am sure the others in my group had a fantastic time I only wish I could have joined them!.

My wife and I had a wonderful week. Roberto was a first class guide throughout the week. He guided us safely over some tricky terrain and was very informative. The walks were varied and invigorating with some challenging stretches. Overall a wonderful way to see the island. The hotels were all of a good standard, the food in all was also good and the drivers who moved us and our gear were very friendly and efficient. The group gelled very well in all respects. Thank you KE. Best wishes, Stuart a nd Binny Fraser.

Excellent trip, and wonderful care
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
The whole trip ran very smoothly, and we were extremely lucky with the group we joined, with whom we got on with extremely well, and certainly luckily with the excellent guide, who for first class. My wife tripped near the end of one of the day's walk and broke her wrist. But, the guide handled the incident extremely well with first aid and then organised the rush over to the hospital. There, we were met by the local company's representative and she made all the difference in making al l go well there. It went all so well that my wife stayed on to the end of the trip, albeit relaxing! By the way, make sure that you take your European medical card if eligible - as soon as the hospital saw ours there were no difficulties with getting treatment promptly. Despite all of that, we plan to be back to Madeira with KE! It is a beautiful and fascinating place, and we got to some very special places.

The perfect walking holiday to enjoy the delights of Maderia
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
This holiday had all one could want: beautiful scenery, testing hikes and nice hotels to return to for a hot shower before dinner! The trails were rougher underfoot than initially expected but not so as to cause a problem. A head for heights is required for some of the walks since one is walking along narrow paths beside sheer drops with only very flimsy barriers, and in some cases none, to prevent accidents. The length of each day is just about right and the lunches provided by each of the hote ls was excellent - indeed too much to eat on a number of occasions. The hotels were good with all the necessary amenities, including in some cases swimming pools and Turkish baths! Roberto our guide was simply first class. Extremely knowledgeable about the island, its geography, flora and fauna, as well as leading with care and consideration for all members of the group. One of the members of our group fell and broke her wrist - Roberto could not have dealt with this difficult situation better. We were fortunate to have excellent weather on our trip, indeed it was unseasonably warm, and the only time I wore my waterproofs was through one of the levadas where water was squirting from the tunnel roof and sides. I very much enjoyed this holiday; certainly more relaxing than the treks I have done before, but none the less enjoyable for that. I would certainly recommend this holiday if you like beautiful scenery, steep ascents and descents followed by leisurely dinners.

Excellent experience!
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
The landscape was spectacular, the food and lodging wonderful, our guide Roberto was knowledgeable and fun, and the group of fellow travelers delightful. Each day provides a different experience. The walks are challenging without being exhausting, but participants need to be prepared for steep ascents and descents and some exposure that is fun if you like that sort of thing!! It will be challenging to convey the uniqueness of Madeira to others when talking to friends about the trip. You just hav e to go experience it! This was my first trip with KE and I am already exploring future possibilities for KE trips. Thanks for a great week.

Breathtaking walking holiday (in many ways)
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
We had a fantastic time walking the peaks and levadas of Madeira. Each day is very different and although the walking is at times quite challenging the tremendous views from the peaks make it very rewarding. I would warn that some of the trails are a little bit exposed and if your are nervous about heights this should be taken into consideration. The island of Madeira is beautiful and this holiday allows you to get a very full appreciation of the entire island on the mix of walking trails and lo cations that you stay in each night. Our group consisted of six travellers and our guide Roberto Fillipe who added tremendous value to each day with his preparation for the trip, his knowledge of the island and his ability to name any number of the variety of flowers blooming around every corner. I would definitely recommend that you take walking poles on this trip as some of the uphills and downhills are steep and can be a little bit tricky underfoot. The itinerary published by KE is very useful and describes each days experience pretty accurately and their equipment listing is also pretty much spot on. All in all a tremendous walking experience in a very beautiful location.

Wonderful walks and a lot of fun
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
This was a great week of walking - every day was quite different, and it felt like we saw a lot of the island in just a week. The walking wasn't difficult, but it was really interesting - mountain climbs, levada walks (just because they are flat doesn't mean there's not plenty of excitement still to be had!), coastal walks, and some steep ups and downs. Lots of different types of flowers and plants to spot each day (and our wonderful guide Roberto knew every single one). Even if t he forecast is for sun, sun, sun you will still need your waterproofs for some of the walks (but I don't want to give some of the surprises away!) The last day climbing the high peaks was my favourite - we were up above the clouds in the sunshine, and the path that wove up and round the mountains was incredible (if a little busy in places). Madeira is a lovely place to visit - nice hotels, plenty to see, delicious food, and great mojitos in the beach bar at Paul do Mar to drink while watching the sunset over the sea.

Weather ruined what should have been a great week`s walking.
★ ★ ★
Although the accommodation, meals and other logistics were good the trip was dogged by poor weather and by some of the levada paths being closed. I was led to believe that Madeira enjoyed good weather with some odd rainy days in February but we had 3.5 days of heavy rain/showers and high winds which ruled out many of the more attractive walks on the programme. Our guide was excellent in finding other routes for us to do and was a really great guy; however I felt he was a little cautious in turni ng back on a couple of the walks, especially as ill-equipped tourists pressed on and evidently had no problems other than getting wet. However Madeira is a lovely place, well worth a visit and I will go back to complete the walks we didn`t do, albeit by myself/with friends rather than an organised trip.

KE Adventure reply

Thank you for your review and we were sorry to hear about the weather during your trip. You were right to expect good weather and just the odd rainy day, which would be typical for February in Madeira. Unfortunately your group experienced a period of exceptionally stormy weather with heavy rain and strong winds. You were very unlucky, but it is good to know you think Madeira is a lovely place and that you intend to return. There are many advantages of travelling on an organised trip with KE, including financial security, assured quality of accommodation, meals and other logistics and, crucially, expert guiding.

Beautiful, stunning Madeira
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Madeira is beautiful in a stunning, rugged way. I've been on two previous KE trips which have been amazing and this one did not fail to impress. Booking was easy and KE arranged private airport transfers for us no problem at all. On the first evening we got to meet up with the rest of the hiking group (12 of us in all) and the wonderful Roberto our guide. What a character he is - he is clearly very passionate about his home and always took the time to answer questions and give information a bout anything and everything 'Madeira'. Not sure there was anything he did not know and he kept it entertaining throughout. The walks are fantastic and give you a different perspective of Madeira every day. From mountains to Levadas, to forests and tunnels - we had it all. Some of the ascents and descents are steep and challenging however Roberto always gives you the information about what to expect at the evening briefing and everything is included in the KE guide. As expected the weather was mixed, we had some days that were baking hot and others that brought torrential rain. Neither are an issue if you bring the kit that is recommended. Some days the rain was only in one valley or one part of the island. As Roberto knows the island like the back of his hand he was able to adapt and change the routes if it meant that the route would be drier and therefore safer. He was always aware of the ability of the whole group and adapted accordingly. One day he changed the itinerary completely due to weather and previous problems with landslides - the walk he chose for us was incredible and the whole group loved every minute. It was a coastal walk from Boaventura to Beira da Quinta that involved seeing some of the little villages but also included some great climbs and amazing views. All the hotels were comfortable and most had access to swimming pools. Our favourite was the hotel at Paul do Mar where you can go to sleep listening to the sound of the sea - beautiful. Each day there was always plenty of time to relax at lunch and also back at the hotels before dinner. All in all I can highly recommend this holiday and again want to say a huge thank you to Roberto 'el capitan' (as we called him) for making the trip and fantastic as it was. You have an amazing guide there KE

Flowers and Fantastic views
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
We had a wonderful week walking in Madeira through spectacular scenery. We had never been to Madeira before and were really impressed by the dramatic, yet lush landscape. We loved the abundance of wild flowers and ancient woodland. Our guide, Roberto, spoke excellent English and was very knowledgeable about the island, and, understandably, proud of it. The accommodation was good, usually with pools, spacious rooms and generous meals. The holiday allowed for plenty of time to socialise over a local 'poncha' or a meal. The landscape is steep, and some of the walks were quite demanding, but very rewarding and well worth the effort.

A Mary Poppins experience - perfect in every way!
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
This was my first trip with KE and my first time in Madeira. What a combination - the perfect holiday in every way. Communications and the booking process worked like a dream. All the information I needed was sent in good time, and in clear, precise format. On arrival in Funchal I was whisked away to the hotel with clear instructions of what would happen next. I met the other members of the group, and the star of the show, our guide Roberto. I could write a book extolling his virtues, but in a r educed version, he constantly kept the safety of the group members as his number one priority. He quickly assessed the capabilities of individual group members and tailored the walks to ensure everyone found it both manageable and challenging. His local knowledge was incredible, ranging through history and culture, politics, cuisine, flora and fauna, geology .... I could go on. Suffice to say that he kept us thoroughly informed and happily answered all of our questions with a quick wit and approachable, entertaining manner. Nothing was too much trouble for him, and if he is an example of the standards which KE demand of their local guides, I can safely say I would not hesitate to make another booking. In fact I have already done so, on the Juniper Trust Nepal Trek in November 2016. The standard of hotels was excellent, rooms were clean and comfortable, and the amazing food was locally sourced and traditionally prepared. The packed lunches were to die for - so imaginative and beautifully prepared. No cheese and pickle sandwiches here!! The walks were varied and interesting, and in some places very challenging with lots of steep gradients, tunnels and narrow rocky paths. Exciting stuff! Our transport was using local taxi firms who obviously took safety, cleanliness, efficiency and friendliness seriously. Travel arrangements home went equally smoothly, with airport transfer efficiently on time and a charming driver. Even the weather was kind to us, with sunshine every day. All in all, a perfect holiday which I would recommend to anyone, and which I am longing to sample again.

Excellent and varied walking
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Thanks so much to KE for this great walking holiday. I was amazed at how much variety there is in a relatively small - but beautiful - island. Six walks, each completely different. Levadas, seaside cliffs, misty Lord of the Rings style forests, stunning mountains, waterfalls, etc. Great views looking down on the clouds! Days were nice and long, and I was pleasantly surprised by the challenge of the terrain - glad I brought boots rather than shoes. Extra thanks to our great guide Roberto, wh o knew the island like the back of his hand, kept us entertained with tales of the mysterious Madeira pigeon, and always seemed to be able to produce a cup of tea or coffee when needed most. He/KE also catered extremely well for my gluten intolerance - I was spoiled! Thanks a million!

Loved the walking. Each day was an adventure to the senses! You get the mountain views, as well as the levada said and valleys. We walked in a cloud forest one day. And the last two days of walking are not to be missed! Roberto is very professional. Set a very reasonable pace for the group.

WHAT??? We're going all the way up THERE!!
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
This walking holiday was the most exhausting thing we've done in a long time but what a fantastic time we had. The whole group just got on so well and everyone had a great time. Roberto, our guide, was brilliant and extremely knowledgeable regarding the whole of Madeira's history, flora and fauna. The views from all of the mountainous places we walked to were stunning and something that often took our breath away but be warned, when the guide tells you that you will be walking in " ;exposed" areas, he means that if you suffer from a fear of heights then beware, as there are a lot of places where there are sheer drops, with only a rope/wire hand rail to hold on to. I have to say we weren't affected by it but some of our group were. We normally don't walk the distances quoted so were both extremely proud to have completed each day with no problems at all even though we were always like the cows tail - last! If you're thinking of doing this holiday, just go for it as it is brilliant, we really can recommend it. Paula and Gavin Ball
