My Experience Leading the Jebel Sirwa Trek

We couldn’t wait to share this day-by-day account from our expert leader Rezki Mohamed Ben, fresh from guiding one of his favourite adventures: Peaks and Valleys of Jebel Sirwa in southern Morocco.

This guided trekking holiday in Morocco takes you through a remote region of the Anti-Atlas Mountains, home to Berber shepherds, volcanic rock formations and Morocco’s famous saffron fields. It’s a unique off-the-beaten-path walking holiday, with wild camping under the stars and time to explore vibrant Marrakech at both ends of the trip.

Mohamed says, “For me, this is one of the best circuits in the Anti-Atlas.”

Read on to find out why.

Day 1: Arrival in Marrakech

Our adventure began as I met with everyone at the airport and drove to our hotel where we got some rest before heading into the mountains the next day.

Day 2: Across the High Atlas to the Anti-Atlas

We left the city early for a spectacular road trip through the High Atlas Mountains, climbing winding passes and watching the landscape slowly change as we entered the quieter and more remote Anti-Atlas range. We reached our starting point for our first trek of the holiday where we walked for about an hour and a half to our first campsite in the dramatic Tislit Gorge. The adventure had begun!

Day 3: Life in a Berber village

Today we explored a traditional Berber village in the valley of Assif Nait Oubyal, which offered amazing views of the clifftop of Agadir and an insight into local life. We really enjoyed seeing the local people express their culture, traditions and customs. We spent the night camping near a shepherd’s house, surrounded by peaceful mountain scenery.

Day 4: Trekking to the Guiliz Peak

After a relaxed breakfast, we followed a winding trail through the valley, climbing steadily toward a mountain pass. The zigzagging path led us to Guiliz Peak, where we enjoyed views of the rugged terrain around us. We paused to take it all in, then returned the way we came and made camp at Tagragra, just below the slopes of Jebel Sirwa.

Day 5: Summit Day – Conquering Jebel Sirwa

We set off early for the highlight of the trek: the ascent of Jebel Sirwa, a peak shaped by ancient volcanic activity with dramatic landscapes. After an exciting adventure to the summit, the views were incredible: the Atlas Mountains to one side, the wide plains stretching toward Agadir on the other. That night, we camped by the lovely shepherd houses of Tissouitine, feeling proud.

Day 6: Valleys, villages and saffron fields

We continued on foot through the peaceful valley of Assif n’Lzine, walking past saffron fields and into some of the region’s most picturesque villages—Ait Ighmour, Idoughagh and Ait Tougga. We stopped for lunch in one of the villages and after another hour of walking, we reached our final campsite near the river just outside Tamhakoute.

Day 7: Back to Marrakech

After a final breakfast at camp, we walked for about two hours to reach the pickup point, then began the drive back to Marrakech. The road took us through the Atlas Mountains, crossing the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass and we stopped for lunch at a small roadside restaurant in Tadart before finishing the journey. We arrived at our Marrakech hotel around 4 PM and ended the day with a final group dinner to celebrate the experience.

Day 8: Farewell

On our last morning, I accompanied some of the group to the airport as they caught their flights home, bringing an end to a great adventure through Morocco’s mountains and villages.

Highlights

There were so many highlights on this trip but our day spent in the village really stood out. Another aspect was the traditional Moroccan cuisine we enjoyed throughout the tour - a delicious variety of dishes that added to the cultural experience. The camps were excellent and the support staff were incredibly helpful and kind. For me, this is one of the best circuits in the Anti-Atlas - an unforgettable journey from start to finish.
