During this excellent trekking holiday, each day consists of walking for approximately 6 -7 hours over a variety of contrasting desert terrain which includes rugged trails and soft desert sand. We are joined with a trek team for the fully-supported wild camping nights in the desert, which is a real highlight of the holiday. All our camping and personal equipment is carried by the camels so it is only necessary to carry a small daypack with daily essentials. Daytime temperatures in the desert are pleasant therefore the walking should be comfortable.

Why KE?

Successfully going for over a decade, this exclusive to KE holiday, takes you on a Lawrence of Arabia-style adventure. Join us and trek off the beaten track through one of the most incredible landscapes on the planet. If you're concerned the Sahara is all sand and hot sun - read Lisa's desert experience.

Itinerary

Your holiday starts at the hotel in Marrakech. On arrival at Marrakech airport you will be met by a KE representative who will assist with the short transfer to the group hotel in the city. Depending on your flight arrival time, after settling in you may have the opportunity to do a little exploration. Marrakech is a friendly city and quite easy to get around and most people head for the central square of the Djemaa-el-Fna beneath the imposing tower of the Koutoubia Mosque. Our evening meal will be taken at the group hotel for ease.

This morning we depart Marrakech and travel across the High Atlas via the Tichka Pass (2260m), the highest road in Morocco. After crossing the mountains we descend to Ouarzazate where we enter the Draa Valley. This is the largest palm grove in the country and stretches for more than 100km along the banks of the River Draa. Next we pass Agdz, Zagora, and Tagounit to reach Ouled Driss on the edge of the Sahara desert. During the journey we are rewarded with ever-changing scenery and opportunities to stop and take photos. We'll arrive at our fixed camp in Ouled Driss late in the afternoon where we'll experience a traditional Berber camp with tents or 'Khaimas' which have been upgraded with certain western comforts such as hot showers. Tonight we'll enjoy dinner surrounded by the desert.

Whilst we are enjoying breakfast the camels are loaded and we'll prepare for our desert adventure. We set off and travel in an eastwardly direction crossing palm groves to reach the edge of the sands. We'll be able to see the dramatic cliffs of the hamada of Draa to the south. Our camels will follow slowly and meander their way through the dunes towards El Ghizlane. We'll pass through a small, deserted village before reaching a flat plateau and our first golden dunes. Stopping for an early lunch at Rass Nkhel we enjoy the shade of a large tree and the stillness that surrounds us. This afternoon we walk for around two hours to reach the holy shrine of Sidi Naji. After making camp and settling in, we'll have dinner among the dunes and enjoy one of the magnificent sunsets.

After breakfast we hike along the left bank of the Draa surrounded by a desert landscape shaped by the wind. The Sahara Desert has its own special vocabulary to describe the different forms. 'Wadi' is a dry river valley, 'hamada' a wind-swept stony plain whilst 'reg' is plain of gravel. The classic desert of everyone's imagination is a vast sea of sand rippled with sand dunes and known as 'erg'. Today we'll encounter all these forms as we walk from our camp towards the distant dunes of Erg Ez-Zahar. After a morning of walking we'll be joined by our camels as we head to Malga Ouedane - the meeting of Wadis and stop for lunch. After a leisurely break we continue through a vast empty expanse to reach the magnificent dunes of Zahar. Here we make camp among these dunes and as we sip tea we can watch the incredible sunset. Finally we'll enjoy dinner before settling down for another night beneath the stars.

This morning after breakfast as we head north and cross a wide bed of the Draa dotted with tamarisk and acacia trees. These incredible desert fauna seem to be able to find water and nourishment from the dry and stony desert floor. Acacia belongs to a species of plant that is mainly native to Africa and Australia. However they are not only desert dwellers and are at home in rainforests, woodlands, coastal dunes, alpine settings and deserts. Tamarisk trees can grow up to 18m in height and are at home in drier and desert areas. With slender branches and grey-green foliage, the trees tend to flower between March and September, with pink and white flowers appearing on the end of spikes. We shall take lunch in the shade of a dense patch of tamarisk before continuing through the desert to reach the smaller dunes of Tilhatine. Tonight we camp near a well which gives the camels a well-earned drink and us the opportunity to enjoy a wash if we wish!

We start today on the right bank of a wadi which has remained dry for the past 35 years since the construction of the El-Mansour-Eddhabi dam near Ouarzazate. Before the dam and during desert rainstorms, the waters would reach Iriki Lake which supported a rich ecology of fish and birds. Today dunes block the passage of any water and the former lake is now a dry plateau. After lunch at Ras Nkhile taken in the shade of the palm trees, we will cross a dry river bed to walk on a plateau dotted with small dunes to reach our fixed camp at Ouled Driss.

After an early breakfast we drive back across the Atlas to Marrakech arriving late afternoon. After checking in at the hotel the rest of the day will be free for you to explore the city. Most people head to the remarkable central square of the Djemaa-el-Fna which is the focus of activities for local people and tourists, however Marrakech has a lot more to discover. Wandering the labyrinth of souks is a great experience as around each corner there is a rich variety of local life and colourful goods to buy. The Bahia or Brilliance Palace is a lovely place to explore taking 14 years to build. A wealth of colourful ceilings and vast courtyard was once home to Bou Ahmed's 4 wives and 24 concubines. In the evening we'll meet up and head out for our final dinner in a local restaurant.

TRAVEL TO YOUR DESTINATION

If flying from the UK there are low cost airlines available to the start and from the end of your holiday.

To benefit from full financial protection, ease your holiday planning, and avoid dealing with airlines, we can book scheduled flights from the UK as part of a flight inclusive package. Scheduled flights are usually more expensive that low cost alternatives, however potentially less stressful if your flight is cancelled or delayed. If you book flights through KE Adventure Travel we will offset the carbon of your flight.

The group will meet at the hotel in Marrakech.

Airport transfers are provided for all clients on Day 1 and Day 8.

Hotel contact details and an emergency number will be provided with your booking confirmation.

All meals are included in the holiday price from dinner on day 1 to breakfast on day 8.

It is not recommended to drink untreated water from the taps. You should take purification tablets or a filter bottle (such as a Water-To-Go bottle) to treat your water. We do not encourage the purchasing of single use plastic bottles.

All food whilst on trek is purchased locally and cooked for us by our excellent trek cooks. KE groups are always surprised at what the cook team conjure up! Breakfasts are continental style, with tea and coffee, muesli, bread, jam, honey and soft cheese.

A morning snack is also provided and this usually consists of a type of Moroccan 'trail mix' with dried figs and dates, peanuts, sugar coated peanuts and other nuts.

Lunch usually starts with the Berber speciality of mint tea, followed by a buffet of rice, pasta or couscous, with a freshly prepared salad - onion, tomatoes, green peppers, grated carrot, green-beans, with tinned sweetcorn or peas added. Hard and soft cheeses, tinned fish, olives, biscuits and bread are also on the lunchtime menu.

Dinner starts off with soup and bread. The main course is usually rice, pasta, couscous, spaghetti or chips, with a vegetable stew (or tagine) consisting of some of the following - onion, potato, carrot, green pepper, zucchini, turnip, parsnip, green beans, and peas. There will be some meat (usually chicken, lamb or beef), however meat is not prominent in the menu. All dishes come with traditional sauces which are rarely (spicy) hot. To round off dinner, there is the usual range of hot drinks.

During this trip the group will spend 2 nights at a tourist class hotel in Marrakech. While there are a range of high-end hotels in Marrakech, we try to strike the right balance of a comfortable and conveniently located base while maintaining a really good value holiday.

In Ouled Driss for 2 nights, we will be staying at a fixed Berber camp with four people per room. These are mixed female and male dormitories. The camp has showers and a sheltered comfortable seating area where we will enjoy dinner.

Whilst on trek in the Sahara desert there will be a total of 3 nights wild camping. This camping is fully supported with all baggage being carried by camels, as well as tents, a mess tent and a toilet tent. You will have a team of staff to look after you including a cook. A mattresses is provided, although some people like to bring their own thermarest as well. You will need a sleeping bag. Sleeping bags are available to hire, please contact the KE office to arrange this.

If you are travelling by yourself, you will be paired up with another single client of the same sex. Single hotel rooms and/or single tents are available for a supplementary cost for all nights except the 2 in Ouled Driss. If you are planning on extending your holiday additional nights at the group hotel or in a range of different hotels and Riad's in Marrakech are available on request.

The group will be led by a professional and qualified tour leader. The group will also have the support of a full trek crew including cook, baggage animals (camels) and their handlers.

Approximately £100 per person (or equivalent in US dollars or Euros) should be allowed for tips, soft drinks, snacks and miscellaneous expenses. Alcoholic drinks, souvenirs and optional activities are additional so you may wish to budget for these.

You cannot usually purchase Moroccan Dirhams outside the country. You can withdraw money in local currency from ATM’s on arrival at the airport in arrivals or in Marrakech. You can choose to take your money in pounds sterling, dollars or euros, and you will be able to exchange it at the airport. Credit cards are useful and it is a good idea to carry one in case of emergency.

Tips are the accepted way of saying ‘thank you’ to your local guides and porters. They do not form part of their wages and any tips they receive are seen as a personal thank you from group members. For our part, we advise local teams that tips are not a duty or a prerequisite but are a bonus and entirely dependent on the service that was given.

This is your ‘thank-you’ to the crew and the final amount should be decided by the group. We estimate that approximately £45 per group member should provide an appropriate level of tips. However, for the leader, we leave the tipping amount totally at your own discretion.

For this holiday you should take one piece of luggage, which should be a soft duffle bag, and a daypack.   Your main baggage whilst trekking will be carried by pack animals and the packed weight of it should be no more than 15kg. It is possible to leave clothes or other items not required on trek at the hotel in Marrakech. You may wish to take a foldaway bag for this purpose.

For international flights please check your baggage allowance with your airline.

For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in the ‘Dates and Prices’ table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements.

The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required, and you should have at least 2 blank pages for each country that you visit.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Please ensure that you check for the latest advice before travel. For the most up to date information on entry requirements, please visit the UK Government website.

Visa Morocco

UK and USA passport holders do not require a visa for short stays.

If you have a severe allergy please inform the KE office before you travel. We will do all we can to help, but we cannot guarantee an allergy free environment on KE trips. You will need to carry your own treatment for the allergy with you, as 'adrenaline auto-injectors' are not carried as standard by KE leaders and staff. You should inform your leader on arrival of your allergy, and let them know where you keep your adrenaline pen.

VACCINATIONS

You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you require any specific vaccinations or other preventive measures. You should be up to date with routine courses and boosters as recommended in the UK e.g. diphtheria-tetanus-polio and measles-mumps-rubella, along with hepatitis A and typhoid. A good online resource is Travel Health Pro.

The unit of currency in Morocco is the Moroccan Dirham.

It is warm in the desert during the day even in the winter months of November through to April. At this time we can expect daytime temperatures to be a pleasant 22 - 28°C, rising to 30°C or more around mid-day. In the evening the temperature will drop to an average of 5 – 10°C but can reach lower than this overnight. The evenings and nights can be chilly and are a dramatic change from the daytime temperatures. Rain is rare in the desert but not unheard of and short-lived storms bringing rain can occur.

As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's ‘Travel Aware campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that before travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCDO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: www.travel.state.gov for essential travel advice and tips.

KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe.  Should the FCDO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation.  We receive regular updates directly from the FCDO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground.  If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office.

KE do not encourage the use of single use plastic items. We are ensuring that our agents all over the world are working together to reduce the problem and educate those around them. We are leading by example in our KE office by reducing our plastic use.

EWP maps

Maps for this region are notoriously difficult to come by. The publisher EWP does make a series covering various regions of the Atlas and adjacent to the Atlas at 1:160,000. These maps are generally based on Russian military maps with all cyrillic text replaced by Latin alphabet.

It is an essential condition of joining a holiday with KE Adventure Travel that you have a valid travel insurance policy to cover the cost of medical treatment and to protect the value of your holiday in the event of cancellation.  When taking out insurance please ensure the policy you choose covers you for the activities and altitude included in your itinerary.

For appropriate insurance cover we recommend Campbell Irvine Direct.  Please go to our Travel Insurance page for further information and to get a quote.

The following checklist should help you with your packing. As a general rule, you should always try to keep the weight of your equipment to a minimum.

Desert Days ★★★★★

Fantastic experience that far exceeded my expectations. Dark desert nights under amazing star filled skies, dreamy desert vistas and great food. This trip spent just the right amount of time in what can be quite harsh conditions. The journey to and from the desert is quite long (7+ hrs) but plenty of interesting landscapes to pass the time.

Our crew were great , even during Ramadan which was quite challenging for them. Our group bonded from day one and we had a lot of fun.

An experience long to be treasured, but with lessons ★★★★★

I was on the same trip as Alex of Chorley and I agree with everything she says, including how good it was for a vegan. It was hot and exhausting at times but that seemed only to enhance the experience of being in a completely new environment of flat stony desert with stones that had cracked from contrasting heat and cold, then dunelands, with occasional acacia and tamarisk trees for shade, beetle track marks in the sand. There were delightful moments when a free-running family of camels came for water at a well, cooking and eating sand bread under the stars, and the sight of a camel stealing oranges from our stores pursued by one of our marvellous crew. By luck, this was one of the best treks I have been on in terms of companions. But there were also important reminders of how life is changing there, villages of fine buildings built of mud, straw and stones that are becoming deserted and collapsing through drought, crop failures, increasing advancing of the desert, quite likely exacerbated by we travellers and our flying. So, with that cautionary note, this was a wonderful trip.

Absolutely wonderful, great for vegans ★★★★★

Absolutely wonderful. Logistics of pick up and drop offs to the airport great. Walking guide was local, incredibly knowledgeable, fun and friendly. The food was delicious and great for vegans! Every day Lassaam made sure we had a mid morning snack and a rest under the shade of a lone acacia tree. Lunch was soo excellent, prepared by a chef who managed to concoct the dishes from the veg which the camels carried. The camel leaders worked their socks off making sure our campsites were set up every night. Everything was provided for us ...matresses, sleeping bags, food, water. An absolutely wonderful experience!

Great experience
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Well organised trip where everything went smoothly. The only hiccup was that the receptionist at the Hotel Racine in Marrakesh said we could not leave any cases behind when we went on the Sahara adventure but Mohammed our guide sorted it out. This holiday was a real experience. We were lucky with the group that we had, to experience desert conditions and to see what desert expansion means to those affected. We stayed on for the Essouira extension and learned about argan oil and thuya wood. It de serves the tag of windy city, but it was nice to chill out. The 18th century riad was spacious and full of character. There were so many police around in general and the people were so friendly that we found ourselves going down narrow alleys that we would think twice about in the UK. Other than that, Hotel Racine is well situated and not too far from the medina. If you arrive late and do not have time to get any dirhams then you can get them at a bank cash machine when you lunch the next day. Mohammed the guide was excellent as was Ismael the cook and all the camel drivers worked hard. Couple of points about the KE itinerary instructions: ascent and descent are given as e.g. 40m but you can add a zero to that as you walk up and down lots of sand dunes. Whilst tipping is discretionary, they will let you know if they are unhappy. KE give advice in euros but allow at least 250 dirhams for the camel drivers, 150 for the cook and 200-250 for the guide. The camel drivers are not paid by the local agency and the tip is especially important to them. The BBC said it would be 34C and sunny when we were on the Sahara trek and allow for 3-4 litres of water per day.

Outstanding support
★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Outstanding support from our guide Mohamed, cook Lehsem and camel driver Ahmed. Always friendly, helpful and willing. Mohamed managed the team and group very well and treated us like friends as much as customers. Excellent food, beautifully prepared, amazing to see bread made on the fire. We were made as comfortable as possible. The snacks (dates, nuts etc) were delicious and full of energy! It looked like the camels were treated well.

Awesome experience!
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
We had a blast in the Sahara! Traveling with a group of like-minded people and camping amount the dunes was a wonderful experience. Our camping team included a group of Berbers and camels ???. Each day, we would hike through the dunes, and dry river beds and enjoyed each other's company. At night, we would have a fire in the sand and dig into Moroccan food (Tajines!) Personally, I find the desert a magical place. The yellow dunes are contrasted with a deep blue sky. The desert can be very q uiet and still, or bold, loud, and windy. Plus being able to see the stars and milky way galaxy really makes you feel small. The journey provided a lot of time for introspection and thought.

A great desert experience
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
This is a very well organised trip. Our guide for the week, Mohammed, ensured that we had the best desert experience possible. The walking is relatively straight forward although climbing up over the dunes sometimes felt like you were trying to walk up a descending escalator. The highlight of the week was climbing a high dune to watch a wonderful sunset over the desert. Our cook Ali produced excellent food, tasty salads at lunchtime and warming tagines in the evening. The camels that carried all our gear provided great subjects for photographs throughout the trek. Overall a great way to experience an adventure in the desert.

Great time in the Sahara
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
This is a fantastic trip for a bit of winter sun, but don't underestimate. Although there's hardly any height gain or lost, 22/25km walking days in the desert is not easy but very rewarding. Day time temperature in January was high teens to low twenties and very pleasant but night temperature and early morning were closer to zero, Although KE don't list a duvet on the equipment list, for any future travelers to the Sahara a light duvet would be well worth taking. The last day' ;s walking is about 25km and very hard on the legs as you walk over small dunes, gravel and a very stony section to finish with. As a group we were talking about this section at camp and thought that to finish this trip on an ultra high a pick up at lunch by 4x4's and have an adventure in the dunes to the fixed camp at Ouled Driss would be the icing on the cake.

A fantastic trek in the Sahara
★ ★ ★ ★
A wonderful experience. A well structured trip. The guide was very knowledgeable and the food was incredible. Amazing views and very helpful crew. I thought this trek would be easy because of the grading - however walking across dunes in 42c is rather challenging and made it harder than I expected. This was a pleasant surprise as I love a good challenge! I wore my usual trekking boots (they have been to Nepal, Scotland ie cold and wet climates) and my feet were fine. Top tips for others: Walking poles are a must for the dunes and to prevent hands swelling (this happened within a couple of hours of not using them due to the heat) Take electrolyte tablets A wind proof lighter is handy (to burn toilet paper on toilet breaks) Carry sandals in day bag for lunch breaks The only which lets this trip down is the 10+ hour drive from Marrakech. However due to the location of the desert, I am not sure there is much of an alternative.

challenging whilst being restful
★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Excellent organisation with a super guide who managed to give us a real feel of the Sahara despite adverse weather conditions. Food was superb and the cook and camel drivers were kind and helpful. Very nice group of fellow travellers from diverse backgrounds all making an interesting mix. I would recommend this to anyone with a sense of adventure and an open mind.

An unforgettable experience, staff were attentive and efficient.
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
We experienced a rare sandstorm during our trip, however the staff worked so hard to ensure that the storm did not put a damper on the trip. They always strived to help us feel safe and happy and cooked up many delicious dishes . The trek leader was a soft spoken gentlemen, who always made sure we were in the know how on what we would be doing and were well prepared for the days activities. He was very knowledgeable about Morocco and desert life. I highly appreciated the extra effort he made to bond with me, as i was the only young adult there. Would recommend the trip to people of all ages.

Memorable achievement in the Sahara
★ ★ ★ ★
The Edge of the Sahara trip was both interesting and memorable. Several of the trekkers had not realised the length and type of journey it would be to the start of the walk. It was a ten hour day in a minibus up and down twisting mountain passes. I found it fascinating and took a lot of photos, others were travel sick. The trek covered amazing desert scenery but the walking time was longer and further and harder than expected. All days were long and quite difficult. Blisters caused by sand in sh oes/socks (in spite of correct gaiters) were disabling. It is essential to attend to them immediately even if it means holding up the group. Maybe waterproof socks would be effective? The heat was manageable but could be difficult later in the season. The tents were excellent with plenty room for two. Mattresses were acceptable. Sleeping bags up to -10deg needed in January. The food was good, sensible, suitable and well-presented.

Exceptional
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Andiamo, vamoose, yallah, let'sgo! The cry from our great guide Omar as we set off into the wide blue yonder. A trek like no other. The Sahara is not just sand dunes, but wadis, stony plains, and baked flats strewn with the bleached bones of past KE trekkers (joke). An all too short trek but most enjoyable. Lots of fun and laughter. Fantastic food and great company. Do not underestimate how hard it is walking in sand! You will have thighs like iron! I had lightweight boots and gaiters and s till got a blister. I believe that a very comfortable old pair of trainers with a good gaiter, like the ones fell runners use, is all you need. The vast blue skies are awesome. The sunshine is so welcome. We had a wonderful week. We all bought 10 litres of bottled water before the trek for around 200 dirham, (£2.00), which was ample to supply us all without the need for sterilising tabs. The long journey to the desert and back to Marrakesh passes swiftly as we can be distracted by watching the locals going about their daily lives and admire the changing scenery. The journey is broken by coffee stops and lunches. The hotel in Marrakech was excellent and only a short walk from the Medina. We encountered a couple a nomads on our way and wished we had some fags to give them. Then we could have taken a photo of them and their donkey. A packet between the group should do it . Be prepared for extremes of temperature. It could be minus 5 at night and plus 25 C in the day. Just go and enjoy a totally different experience.

Desert Walk
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
An amazing experience in the Sahara Desert. Long days walking at a steady pace, camping under the stars, excellent guide in Omar who looked after us superbly. He has a gentle way about him but has a depth of knowledge he is keen to impart. The information he gave us about life in the desert, the changing ways of the people, flaura and animals, the mountains and the tribes who live here. All added to the experience. The only slight thought I would give is if you have knee problems be aware it is hard on the knees in the sand which is very fine.

A genuine Sahara experience
★ ★ ★ ★
A genuine taste of the Sahara, with 4 full days of trekking south of the most southerly villages in Morocco over a range of stony plains, dry river beds and amazing sand dunes. Our group were very well led by our guide Omar, fed by legendary cook Hassan (who completed the entire trek wearing black slip on shoes - not recommended for lesser mortals), and supported by the 3 camel drivers with their camels. Daytime temperatures of 35-37*C in the sun made the walking a real challenge for most of our group and in these temperatures the holiday grade should probably be regarded as a 6. Also be aware that the mini bus ride from Marrakech to the start of the trek at Ouled Driss is approximately 450km and a long day. Overall though this trip is an accessible way to obtain a genuine Sahara experience.

Great trip to the dessert with some time for Marrakech
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
This was my first trip with KE and to Morocco and I loved it! After some initial issues with my flight, I found the guide (Hassan) waiting for me at around 2am outside and from then on everything went very smoothly. The drive to the dessert is long but allows you to see the range of landscapes in Morocco. The walking itself was more varied than I had expected with the day's highlights including a sunset from a dune, a date farm, a Saharan village, a well (very exciting when you havent washe d for a few days!) and the general chance to meet new people, walking sometimes with the camels and the great food. I happen to be vegan and the choices suited me very well but I think most people will attest to how nice it was thanks to chef Ibrahim- I certainly didnt need the extra energy bars I took! I am glad that I didnt wear any fabric walking boots because although leather is warm, my feet didnt overheat too much and inportantly little sand was let in. Time for Marakech at the end was good to add to the experience too- I had chance for Jardin Majorelle and the Berber museum+getting very lost in a souk and seeing the main square+ passing the palaces and browsing the fixed price market. Hassan really was a highlight of the trip- if you have any questions about the history, culture, landscape etc of Morocco then ask because he will probably know! Elizabeth (Hassans partner) was great to meet too because alike quite a few of the travellers, she has travelled a lot!

Very enjoyable desert experience. Spectacular drive over the Atlas Mountains
★ ★ ★ ★

Great trip with exciting drive over the mountains on the way there and back. Four days of desert sand dunes was enough though. Wear high ankle boots so the sand does not get in. Gaiters a good idea but not on the kit list. Spectacular sun sets as well

I found this trip to be excellent value and the crew and tour leader really helpful and friendly. Four days walking in the dessert with each one giving a new experience or something unique to see. The only advice I would give is to wear gators to stop the sand running into your walking boots

A wonderful journey
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
I've travelled with KE on many occasions before, but always to the mountains. This was going to be a completely new experience! I must say that the trek was even better than I expected. Hassan worked hard to make sure that all of our group had a great experience, and was an engaging and informative leader at all times - we all really enjoyed his company. The crew, including our chef Mohammed, were also great fun and did everything to make sure we enjoyed our time in the desert. The desert l andscape itself, once you get tuned into to it, is remarkably varied, and changes before your eyes as the sun climbs and sinks. The stars at night are unforgettable too. I would say that if you are thinking about doing this one, just take the plunge, book and go - it's a great journey and different every day - and if Hassan is your guide, you will learn a lot about Morocco along the way!

Different experience!
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
I’ve always had a preference for mountain landscapes, places where scenery, climate and altitude vary along the way. This new experience has been very different, the uniformity of desert landscape is only broken with an endless sea of dunes, admirable and majestic dunes that are filled with shadows at dusk. The Sahara Desert is different, beautiful and violent; a merciless sun exhausts the hiker, the evening wind comes loaded with sand, sand flowing through tents and clothes that reaches every where.
A searing and cruel landscape, a vivid and infinitely beautiful landscape that you never forget.

Can't recommend enough - fantastic!
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
I did this Trek holiday in January 2016 and had an absolutely fantastic time - it exceeded all my expectations. The organisation was fantastic and everything was thought through and provided for. Amazing fixed camps; delicious and healthy, fresh food at every meal; authentic Moroccan tea on tap; super helpful support team; the best guide ever! Hassan was a dream and I can't praise him highly enough - he was the highlight of my trip with his enthusiasm, knowledge and genuine care. He helped the group gel, kept us all on track, told jokes, kept us informed of plans each day and was happy to help with anything we needed. I also loved the elements of the organised trip that I wouldn't have got had I gone independently; the trip to a local spices shop with a short talk on different spices and their uses/health benefits; horse and carriage ride around Marrakesh after the final group meal; seeing the largest palm grove in Morocco etc. I would recommend this trip (and any with KE) to anyone, regardless of ability or previous experience and will definitely look to book another adventure with KE in the very near future!

Shame about the guide
★ ★ ★
This was an interesting trip that could have been a lot better. The hotels in Marrakech were both out of town, and the beds were both uncomfortable. Our guide was, unfortunately, the worst guide I have ever had, and having been on about 10 adventure holidays, nine of which were guided well, this was very disappointing. Our guide did not give us proper briefs and spent very little time talking to us, preferring to talk to the cook and camel headers. The food was good, (the cook did well) though w e became bored of couscous and tagine and it was a shame to have it again, in a particularly low quality restaurant, on our last day in Marrakech. If you decide to go on this trip, make sure you ask the guide to make you to a good restaurant on the last night. The view of the stars at night was superb, the camping was fun and the view from the large sandmen we climbed was superb. Take lots of high factor sunscreen and warmer clothes for the cold evenings.

KE Adventure reply

Thank you for your review and for the great photos. The hotels you used in Marrakech are located approximately 15 minutes walk from the main square and although there are closer options, these can be noisy in the evenings. We were surprised to read that you were disappointed with your guide, as Hassan normally receives excellent feedback and is usually keen to share his enthusiasm and knowledge of his country. As well as being responsible for your safety and the smooth running of your trip, KE expects all its leaders to be active members of the group and we will be emphasising this aspect of leadership at our next annual guides training course in Marrakech. At the end of a great holiday the last night's meal should be special. We have a list of recommended restaurants in Marrakech, although we would not want to completely rule out our guides' local knowledge when deciding the best venue for a particular group. It was gratifying to read that you enjoyed various aspects of the holiday such as the food on trek, your desert camps under Saharan night skies and the views from the dunes.

Stunning introduction to the desert.
★ ★ ★ ★

The length of time in the desert, route and degree of difficulty were all spot on for me. The quality of the food was superb. The quality of camping kit and locations was fine and all the staff very friendly. Whilst, for me, the occasional slight disorganisation added to the experience, I think that our leader's English had the potential to be a problem (on a number of occasions we had to resort to our elementary French).

By Ian from Kendal | 04 January 2016

Mostly Excellent
★ ★ ★ ★
Hi there, The trip overall was of a high quality, the quality of the food was a particular highlight, vast quantities of deliciousness prepared or cooked by the superb chef in camp, or at the lunch rest spot. The guide himself was good overall, though he did have a tendency to end up ahead of the group when trekking, which was tough on morale when feeling tired and baked, and he wasn't particularly chatty during the day, only becoming sociable in the evenings. It was often hard to know what was happening, what the plan for the day was, how close we were to camp, etc. These issues could be easily overcome, and was the only issue with an otherwise excellent trip.
