Overview

The Cordillera Blanca is an apt name for this range. With its snow-fluted summits, knife-edge ridges, tumbling glaciers, glacial lakes and steep-sided valleys; this spectacular 10-day trek will take you on a high and wild tour of the range as we traverse around its most beautiful peak: the distinctive pyramid of Alpamayo. After an overnight stop in Lima, we drive along the Pan-American Highway to the mountain town of Huaraz to begin this most picturesque of Andean treks. Brimming with the buzz of fellow trekkers, the trail-head of Huaraz provides a great base for our two acclimatisation walks. Leaving Huaraz, we take a short transfer to the start of our trek, where we will spend the next nine nights under canvas supported by our expert Andean trek crew. Crossing high passes, following ancient trails and passing through Quechuan communities, our superb trek provides a succession of simply stunning views of Mt Huascaran (6768m), Mt Taulliraju (5830m) and Mt Rinrijirca (5808m). The centrepiece of this trekking holiday is undoubtedly our visit to base camp of Alpamayo (5947m). Renowned as one of the most spectacular treks in the world, this itineray packs a punch for those looking for a two week adventure.

This is a classic trekking holiday on which we will encounter a variety of underfoot conditions, ranging from village trails, high rocky mountain passes and grassy meadows in the sparsely inhabited high valleys within the Huascaran National Park. It is possible that the highest passes may even have a light covering of snow. You should be comfortable with walking for up to 8 hours each day and for several days continuously. To help you acclimatise and enjoy your trekking holiday, we have allowed 3 nights at around 3000 metres, and 2 acclimatisation walks, before we start trekking. The Alpamayo Basecamp Trek is a challenging trekking holiday on account of its overall length, the number of high passes and camping nights. This is a fully supported trek and you will only be required to carry your day pack each day. Our friendly camp crew will take care of all the camp chores, so when in camp you can relax, rest and enjoy the views.
