Trail Running in Chamonix - your questions answered

One of our adventure travel consultants and KE’s number one trail runner, David, recently had the exciting opportunity to experience one of our NEW trail running holidays! David embarked on the Chamonix Classic Running Trails adventure, running through the stunning landscapes of the French Alps over six spectacular days. He had an unforgettable week and now he's sharing some of the highlights and what you can look forward to on this incredible adventure.



Tell us about the holiday – what can you expect?

Expect an amazing introduction to running in the Chamonix valley on some of the best trails around. The guide’s coaching and tips are second to none. This trip isn't a training camp but you will undoubtedly become a better and more confident trail runner by the end of the week. There’s also plenty of time to enjoy everything the area has to offer too!

How hard was the trip?

The ascents and descents are long on most days but you’ll have plenty of breaks in between to catch your breath and enjoy the view. The terrain and pace varies by day but if you’re typically at the back of the group then don’t worry, the group will never be too strung out and the guide will manage all the different speeds and abilities of the group. You’re running on some of the most famous trails in the Alps and they are all in great condition and just a pleasure to run on.

Did you manage some down time too?

The accommodation and food on this trip are also incredible so you’re guaranteed to enjoy every moment - on and off the trails!

After your runs, you'll have ample time in the afternoons to explore Chamonix and with free train travel, you can go and see as much of the valley as you like in your spare time.

Alternatively, if you prefer more relaxing down time, you can kick back and relax in the hotel pool and jacuzzi!

What was your highlight?

For me, I think it had to be the Grand Balcon Nord – an amazing balcony run with Mont Blanc and the Aiguille du Midi towering behind you. This was exactly what I envisaged when I thought of trail running in the French Alps!

What did you pack and what equipment did you need?

I’d recommend taking a lot of gear with you to Chamonix and then the guide will let you know what will be required on each day depending on the conditions. Always take waterproofs and a warm layer with you when out trail running – absolutely essential. I packed plenty of food, water and hydration supplements to stay fuelled on the climbs and descents - although there’s always a cake stop en route too! Sunblock and sunglasses are a good idea as well, it can get hot even at 2,000m+. Lastly we all had running poles, which helped a lot on the climbs.

Any tips for future runners?

It’s important to mix up your scenery when running so this was the perfect trip for this. Running with other people and a guide is a great way to start if you’re new to trail running, transitioning from road or just looking to improve your skills as you will learn so much about different running styles and where you can improve your own. This trail running holiday was such an eye opener for all of those and I cannot recommend it enough.
