If your time is limited or you fancy a high-octane weekend of walking, our self-guided Best of Hadrian’s Wall walking holiday is hard to beat. With the walking taking in the high points of Whin Sill escarpment and the rugged crags of Windshield the views stretch across the borderlands to Scotland and down the English Pennines.

The route will pass the most restored stretches of the wall and one of the most impressive Roman forts in Britain, Housesteads, which sits in a dramatic position atop the escarpment. The following day you can either add in an extra day for a full exploration of Vindolanda or content yourself with a quick visit before striding onto Great Chester’s fort, the Roman Army museum and ending in the pretty village of Gilsland.
